IGN Reviews Dynasty Warriors 5 ...

Closing Comments
DW5 is a game that is realizing a series' quest to create the ultimate experience of one hero taking on army after army in ancient China. Within those narrow parameters it certainly succeeds by creating a system where players can go on seemingly endless battles against hordes of soldiers. All of the new additions serve to make the experience that much better, but after doing this before there is definitely some overall franchise fatigue setting in.

If you've played a Dynasty Warriors game before and were looking for a new experience, this wouldn't be it. If you absolutely need some more Three Kingdoms fighting or haven't played one of these games before, then this is the next new thing to get into. Just be warned that this is one long, long fight and even though the game may be epic it would be nicer if it was not quite such a gigantic tale to slowly read through.

7.5
Presentation
A cleaner menu system this time around is a welcome change, but the quality of the voice-acting and the music has lived up to it's less-than-high standards.

8.0
Graphics
Less fog than before! It's now possible to see enemies that are farther than 15 feet away when there's a crowd and, boy, is that a relief.

6.0
Sound
The voice-acting is campy and the music just can't shake its love of guitar solos.

7.5
Gameplay
The fighting has gotten more interesting with change in the bodyguard and the stronghold systems, but a lot of this is still a long session of beating up the regular soldiers.

9.0
Lasting Appeal
If you want to collect it all, then you're in for one of the longest rides of your life. Not the most varied ride, but it's a ride.

7.7
OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

If this had released a month ago I'de be all over it day one, but with God of War, Chaos Theory, Doom 3, and Jade Empire releasing in consecutive weeks respectively, DW is going to have to wait a while. By then I'll be able to score it used most likey.

This is what, the seventh Dynasty Warriors game this generation? 2, 3, 4, 5, 3: Xtreme Legends, 4: Xtreme Legends and 4: Empires. For 50 bucks? Great series and all, but I can easily wait until it drops to $20.

I'll pick this up after the price drop.... and I'd better get a damn Empires version of this one to boot!

You know, now that I've had time to read the review I'm anticipating it even more. Basically, this is the best version yet. Their pissed because it's yet another version, but they clearly make it sound like the best. I skip every other iteration or so of this so I think it's going to be quite satisfactory to me.

Nothing surprising in the review summary, including the obligatory
a lot of this is still a long session of beating up the regular soldiers
which I still have to grin at:

Unless you're in a specific mode or item hunt, beating up on regular soldiers is 100% a waste of time. Some people need to realize that the only way to play DW is to beat up on people with names above their heads at all times.

What surprises me the most about 5 is how streamlined a lot of the stages and battles have become, as well as the stat-building portion to the game; in DW4 I'd say it would take me ~30 battles to bring a character from 0 to full, and now in DW5 it takes 7 or 8 at most.

I thought in this one the # of kills you had went towards improving your character?

Not nearly as much as killing named generals, not using musou, and finishing the stage in good time.

edit: Focussing on stats more at first will make it easier to kill peons on the side during the later missions of the game anyway. Plus there are a few late stages where people show up with -tiny- lifebars and just need to be breathed on for death.

Also, there are times when you can use musou and still get the end-stage bonus, but I don't know the exact logic behind it yet.

Either way, the majority of character points still comes from offing enemy generals.

This is why you read review text, folks!

I'm sure that some people will groan at the 7.7 score. I really don't care about the score though! :D The text is very complementary to the game! The game of the month will be here next week!

You've managed to make me more interested in the series with these two posts than anything else I've heard about it has. (Should I curse you or thank you?) It's nice to know there's more to shoot for in them than mindless kill-counts and endless 4-hit combos.
