IGN: You can't use your Xbox controllers on the Xbox 360

Anyone who fell in love with the OLD Xbox controller is out of luck.

One of the big unanswered questions about Xbox 360 regards Microsoft's plans for current generation peripherals. While one look at the Xbox 360's beautiful dedicated controller (known in some circles as Type Sex) will make you swear off the Type S forever, it's conceivable that gamers have built up a collection of Xbox controllers that they'd like to continue using on the next generation system. So will Microsoft provide the chance?

The answer seems to be no, at least currently. Interviewed in the latest issue of Famitsu Xbox, Microsoft Product Development Limited Xbox Chief Shinichi Manaka reveals that Microsoft won't offer a USB converter to let players use their current controllers on the 360. Microsoft isn't even looking into the possibility. The company wants to offer a fully wireless environment and believes that once players get used to wireless, they won't want to go back.

Kind of a bummer, I guess.

My beautiful Arcade stick.... Well this'll just prolong the purchasing of a 360 until an adapter is released (hack or whatever)

X360 controller > Controller S everyone knows that already, so "eh" if you can't use it on the X360.

You people with game/genre specific controllers = assed out though... :lol

This is bullshit, bullshit, bullshit.

I have two Wavebirds and I never use them. Having play interrupted by a controller that's losing power is not cool, and I'm tired of feeding the controllers batteries.

You people that prefer to have more options and usefulness with your consoles = assed out though... :lol
Fixed.

Touchy touchy... the movement of the black and white buttons to the shoulder position already eliminated the main complaints with with Controller S. So if you can't plainly see that it's already better I have some prime beachfront property in eastern California you'd be interested in.

And the second part was a joke... you know... like your *keeps mouth shut*..

well, from what i played of the 360 conroller the shoulder "buttons" are placed too close and reminds me kind of the z button on the gc controller

Yes, I hope very few games require use of the shoulder buttons and triggers at the same time. I struggled with that in Full Auto.

Hopefully, it's something I'll get used to if I buy an Xbox 360.

Not surprised, with the shape of both the GC and 360 controllers shoulder buttons would definitely feel a little weird without changes in the design.

That said, if we assume that you'll be using them as much if not more than white/black button usage on the xbox it's still a vast improvement. And you'll probably get used to 'em anyway.

FYI, i never had any problem with the Z button placement either. ;)

I'm sure they'll have an adapter at Liksang within a month of the Xbox 360's release, but personally I'd rather put the money for an adapter towards another wireless controller. It does seem unfortunate that MS couldn't have put Xbox controller ports on the 360 like the Revolution has for Gamecube controllers, especially since the 360 and Xbox controllers basically have the exact same buttons. They have to make back some money on peripheral sales I guess.

Don't Xbox -> USB adapters already exist? And doesn't Xbox 360 use any controller plugged in through USB?

Yeah. He doesn't say that it won't work only that they won't offer 1st party adapters. Hope for a fully emulated Steel Battalion with full AA and 720p still alive!!1111!11!

Doesn't mean that the lack of black and white buttons on the 360 controller will limit the xbox games on 360? Isn't it backwards compatible? wtf..

? The buttons were just changed from shitty face buttons to shoulder buttons

Hack is right. Either myself or another SRKer will have these things in a DB15 project box the second they get into the stores.

Experimenting with $30+ a pop PCBs. Can not fucking wait.

Why lie? feed it batteries? once every what? maybe 6 months or so?

between myself and my 7 year old my wavebird is on 3-6 hours a day and we get 3-6 months out of batteries. maybe you should buy better quality batteries. :) problem solved.

Exactly. I have had my Wavebird for almost 3 years and in that time I have only had to change batteries three times (!). It isn't exactly under-used either. I doubt this guy has ever even used a Wavebird, let alone owned one - their battery consumption is absolutely impeccable. I change the ones in my TV/DVD/receiver/cable remote controls far more often.

Hopefully Microsoft gets it just as right with the 360 controller. I don't need rumble, but wireless I can't live without. Once you've experienced the freedom it affords, you'll NEVER go back.

Yes, both the Wavebird and Logitech PS2 (rumble off) controllers do very well on batteries.
Its surprising really
