[IGNxGamer] How PS5 & Xbox Will Benefit from AMD FidelityFX (FSR) - Performance Review

With modern engines demanding much more from our hardware, Ray Tracing, 120fps, 4K the demands can get high to try and keep up. But AMD have delivered the answer to all of our problems, or so they have told us. Now out with a selection of games to test including on Console, I dive deep into what it offers, how it works and if this is the Performance Silver bullet we need.

As long as devs stick to 1440p 30 fps or 1080p 60 fps targets, they can use FSR or DLSS or NaziSS for all i care.

I can live with a slightly blurrier image if i am getting destruction, physics and avatar quality visuals.

Good and informative video. It's also amazing how riftbreaker can run at 60 fps with RTX on at ultra settings on a 1080ti with FSR., without its 20 fps.

Could this be one of the reasons why PS5 design was optimised for better rasterization? Please don't ridicule me, I ain't technical.

Praise the Lord.

Fuck native 4K. Such a huge waste of resources.

So the potential here is, FSR can be deployed easily and integrated with temporal solutions. Meaning, cleaver use and improved solutions are yet to come.

Good news.

What qualifies as "low res" now? Like am I crazy that I'm kinda fine with 1080p? Why do things need to be 4k - maybe I need glasses or something

Instead of going all in on native pixel count that gives you diminishing returns at some point why not go and push more triangles and effects and make games actually look better and more realiastic?
but nooooooooooooooooo , next gen they will go for 8k at 240fps

Hey NXGamer NXGamer - great vid as always, and it's great that you've landed a new gig. But is it possible to subscribe only to your IGN content instead of the rest? I wouldn't want to mess up my Youtube feed any more as it is, but sure would like to see your content on other channels as well.

And a huge shout-out about mentioning the SID and using it as background music, you clearly are a man of culture :)

I'd be curious to see Insomniac's upscaling compared to FSR. I have a feeling it's likely a better solution

Of course it's better. Any actual RECONSTRUCTION techniques that uses multiple frames to create image should be superior. Fsr is advanced upscaling

Agreed, there should be a playlist at the least.

hopefully no more 30fps ray tracing games on PS5.

Give me 60fps, mid-high setting, low-mid setting of ray tracing, upscaling 4k or 2k on console, im happy.

Judging from Arcadegeddon on PS5, it looks like techniques like this are quite easy to implement and get good performance out of the hardware from day one w/ RT on top. Generally, these consoles have been very good and seem to deliver very stable (60fps) performance from day one from what we've been seeing so far. I'm so happy there are no more dev woes about the lack of proper debuggers, profilers, or hard to develop for platforms like it was in the PS3 era. From a technical standpoint, this has been the best console gen by far, IMO. Very well-thought-out systems with balanced specs (especially XSX/PS5) for the price. Big kudos to the engineers at AMD first and foremost as well as the talented teams at MS and Sony for this.

Is this method really much better than checkboard from sony or proprietary methods like what insomniac use?!

I mean if it was dlss ok, but super resolution seems kinda meh on pc.

No, it was simply more economical to focus on that given where AMD was in the context of their own R&D into raytracing, as well as the extra cost & die space a more robust raytracing solution ala Nvidia would require. There's a lot of other things that play into it but fundamentally it was cost that drove those decisions, as they always do for consoles.

I don't know about checkboard but it's worse than temporal upsampling techniques from technical standpoint.

The Ultra Quality & Quality modes seem pretty good, if the game has some decent TAA unlike Avengers at least :messenger_grinning_sweat: , so it really depends on which mode of FSR the developer will be using on consoles - it seems easy to implement so is probably why it looks like FSR will be used going forward. Checkerboarding has always been fine to me, even better with the games on PS5 having a 60fps patch as the more frames it has to work with seems to iron out some of the kinks. Insomniacs solution would probably be the best of the 3 as the added AA pass really helps to make a clean image, but it still looks noticeable when recontrusting from a lower resolution (like when using RT performance in R&C) as they all do

To be honest all these techniques, even the mighty DLSS, will have issues depending on what aspect of the image you focus on so you just gotta pick your poison.

It isn't based on this video:

it's timestamped

Yeah but the latest version of dlss has very little to no poison.

Impressive! A scientist on GAF told me that FSR is a blurry mess.

IGN has been doing a much better tech analysis these past few months in contrast with the biased "tech" guys on Digital Foundry. I'm really impressed. Keep them coming!

What about the people that WANT 30fps ray-tracing games though?
