I'm buying an Xdude. Are these good game choices?

Not all the games on my list are out yet, but here are the 10 games I want to get on the Xbox.

Halo
Halo 2
DOOM 3 (when it releases)
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (wir)
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Rallisport Challenge 2
Fable
Ninja Gaiden
GTA: San Andreas (wir)

Are any of these bad choices? Am I missing anything?

Halo - Excellent
Halo 2 - Excellent
DOOM 3 (when it releases) - Can't comment.
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (wir) - Never 'erd of it
Panzer Dragoon Orta - Excellent
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - OK. Annyoing combat.
Rallisport Challenge 2 - Excellent.
Fable - Good solid action RPG, lovely atmosphere.
Ninja Gaiden - From the Gods.
GTA: San Andreas (wir) - Is it coming to Xbox?

I'd add Enclave and the original Buffy to that list which you should be able to pick up in the bargain bin for silly price. Plus any Xbot must have Riddick - Escape from Butcher Bay.

Project Gotham Racing 1 and 2 are both really fun.

Burnout 3 is amazing add it to your list!

Prince of Persia: SoT is incredible (I see it's already on your list, play this ASAP)

Crimson Skies is another amazing experience. One of the best out there, right up there with Prince of Persia.

I also enjoyed Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, although it was kinda buggy.

Pretty good list otherwise.

When you buy it, please make sure to refer to it as a "XDude". When the counter person asks you to repeat, scream "XDUDE!" at the top of your lungs.

If you're going to be a dork, go all out - don't half step!

Halo
Halo 2

Found both to be very average. I suppose it depends on what kind of FPS you're keen on. Are you into the script-heavy likes of Half-Life 2 and Call of Duty, where immersion is the key? Or are you into highly conventional corridor romps? If it's the latter, go for Halo/Halo 2.
DOOM 3 (when it releases)

One of the worst releases of the year, although perhaps the Xbox version has been spruced up.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (wir)

Never played it.

Panzer Dragoon Orta

One of the few Xbox titles worth owning. It's short, but a collectible worth purchasing.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Amazing. Definitely the best multi-platform platformer released this gen.

Rallisport Challenge 2

Highly overrated. The controls are wonky.

A joke. Extremely shallow. Grows old REAL FAST. If there's one turkey that's sold solely off the back of hyperbole, this is it. If you're going to buy an RPG, I'd go for KoTOR -- which, while I didn't care for it, is a much more solid game than Molyneux's overrated opus.

Ninja Gaiden

Many think it's great. I didn't care for it. The difficulty, which was artifically spiked, turned me off.

GTA: San Andreas (wir)

Hasn't even been announced. Won't release until next winter, if at all.

If I were in your shoes, I'd get:

Riddick. It's one of the few AAA games worth owning on the Xbox.

talk about your "wonky" control! the control in riddick is pure shit. i can't believe someone could like this game at all, let alone over such masterpieces such as halo 1, 2. yikes... your taste is wonky.

Or are you into highly conventional corridor romps?
Well it's got some of the best A.I in any FPS, so that in and of itself elevates it above 'highly conventional'. Plus it's got tons of wide open areas and vehicles, which aren't elements you'd find in a 'highly conventional corridor romp'.

Though you do bring up a good point. You should consider KOTOR and KOTORII RvsS.

I'll check out the Gamespot video review of Riddick and see if it's my thing... I heard that for most of the game you don't have a gun, which makes me a bit wary.

I assumed that since GTA III and Vice City are on Xdude, San Andreas will be as well. What would be the point of not doing it? Did the Xdude double pack not do well?

I'm wary of Fable as well (but hoping it's great). As long as the combat is fun and it's replayable, I don't care if it's not really all that deep.

Regarding DOOM 3, the last FPS I played was TimeSplitters II. On PC, the most advanced FPS I've played is Quake II. I'm not looking for something genre defying, I just want fast run-n-gun gameplay with some spooky atmosphere, and for that I hear DOOM 3 delivers.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm considering them.

WTF?!!

From Gamespot:
Dark Corners of the Earth features an original protagonist, an ex-cop named Jack Walters, but it heavily draws inspiration from the Lovecraft novels, The Shadow Over Innsmouth and The Shadow Out of Time. Suffice it to say that this is not going to be a heart-warming tale for the whole family to enjoy. Dark Corners of the Earth will place Walters in one horrific environment after another, and if the Lovecraftian horrors are not enough to kill Walters, then his own dwindling sanity at the sight of all this evil may be enough to do him in. We got the distinct impression that players will certainly have a challenging time making their way through this game, having to worry about monsters lurking in the darkness, having nothing but authentic 1920s-era weapons to work with, and having to keep from going completely mad.

At a glance, the game resembles a first-person shooter. But that's merely because of the first-person perspective and the ability to wield certain firearms for self-defense. However, Dark Corners of the Earth will play out more like an adventure game, and it will require players to think on their feet and sometimes sneak their way through certain situations rather than rely on brute force; after all, the brute force is mostly on the bad guys' side. Don't take this to mean that Dark Corners will be devoid of action, though. Among the sequences we got to see at E3 were no fewer than two different battles against boss monsters--one against Dagon, a towering aquatic fiend, and the other against Shuggoth, a disgusting mass of ooze, eyes, and tentacles. Don't expect to defeat such creatures by unloading your six-shooters into them--it's rather intuitive, actually, that merely firing at these types of things would yield no effect.

The designers expressed that one of the ways in which Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth will differ significantly from first-person shooters is in how it will often force you to run for your life rather than stand and fight. By outmaneuvering your foes, you'll hopefully be able to outsmart them, lead them into traps, and so on. The game's action portions still look like they need some work, in terms of collision detection and getting the feel of the shooting to be just right; the E3 build we saw didn't really give that visceral feedback we like seeing from first-person shooting sequences. But the game seems to be well on its way in this regard. For instance, we saw as Walters snuck up behind a cultist and drove a knife straight into his back, fatally wounding the evil being. We also saw Walters take on some Deep Ones at close range, desperately trying to fend off their razorlike claws with his weapons. For a game that's not billing itself as a first-person shooter, Dark Corners of the Earth does look like it'll pack in plenty of action.

Walters won't be able to easily recover from his injuries, which may leave him hobbling, unable to aim, and hallucinating. We got to see some of the game's sanity effects as Walters starts to see the world through the eyes of his enemies, or starts to feel disoriented and dislocated. We were told that, if Walters gets too in over his head and loses all of his sanity, he may even involuntarily turn his weapons on himself. The sanity effects in the game are not governed by any onscreen meter, so it'll be up to players to try to see through Jack's mental issues.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth will be a single-player-only game in which you'll only be able to save your progress at certain key points throughout each stage, which should help add to the suffocating sense of tension that the designers of the game are attempting to deliver. They're also working on adding full lip-synching to the game's characters, and they are busy polishing up and balancing the gameplay, which will feature hidden secrets to encourage replay value. Those familiar with HP Lovecraft know that this classic horror author's works are all about psychological, unspeakable terror, which is a difficult subject to broach in a visual medium like gaming. But Headfirst Productions seems to have taken the time and effort thus far to make Dark Corners of the Earth a faithful adaptation of the source material. We're looking forward to seeing how it continues shaping up. Stay tuned for additional details.

What was wrong with Riddick's control? Controlled fine for me.

Ok, just watched the video review of Riddick. Definitely adding it to my list.

How was Crimson Skies single player?

Short but very good except for the dumb cave level.

Jet Set Radio Future
Splinter Cell 1-2, 3 When it releases
MechAssault
Amped 2
PGR2
Otogi 1 and 2. You cannot afford to miss out on these games. Fucking awesome.
Morrowind
Top Spin
Shenmue 2 (If you haven't got it already)
DeathRow
Steel battalions if you can afford it (Played this game, it's fuckin incredible)
BreakDown (Yes you're without gun more than riddick, but it's awesome and you PUKE!!!)
Metal Arms: GitS
Thief 3 : Deadly Shadows
Full Spectrum Warrior

if you have any interest in xbox live, get pandora tomorrow. it's the most clever/innovative multiplayer game i've ever seen. and yes, i realize how overused "innovative" is. it truly applies here.

Here's my revised list:

Halo
Halo 2
DOOM 3
Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Rallisport Challenge 2
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
Ninja Gaiden
Super Monkey Ball Deluxe
Otogi
Otogi 2
Jet Set Radio Future

and um, sorry, but I don't like RPGs too much. Teens saving the world from evil religious factions is a bit too worn out for me.

Would it be wrong to throw RtCW into the mix? I picked the Platinum Hit's one up cheap and have been enjoying it online immensely.

EDIT: And yes, that is quite possibly the most poorly worded sentence ever.

Dont worry, only one Teen in KOTOR. Superb writing, lovely dialogue. Much more sophisticated than your usual teeny shit

KOTOR is leagues ahead of most of the RPGs i've played, the story is well worth playing through. Mission structure is wonderful.

Best set of Characters too, they have history and your role determines their future. MUST buy for any Xbox owner

Besides from that, a awesome selection, tons of AAA titles on your list. I suggest taking a look at Fable, Splinter Cell Pandora Tommorow and DOA Ultimate. XBL is a must, its fun gaming with other GAF members.

Plus you get the extra updates that will follow. Conker should be a blast online :)

All of those games (the released ones) are pretty good choices. You might also want to check out KOTOR, Thief 3, Morrowind GOTY, Armed & Dangerous, and Beyond Good & Evil. They're all cheap and among the best games this gen IMO.

Also, since you list upcoming games, don't pass on Conker! At the very least, be sure to check out the demo in this month's OXM.

Wow... The XBOX is not the place to go for exclusive content.

that level is not hard if you use the right plane ie: the little helicopter thingy. i think most people tried this with a regular plane which would make it way too hard. with the little copter thingy the level was easy and very fun.

Glad you added Riddick. It's superb. I'd definitely add the KOTOR games, their so much better than most RPGs, especially if you can't stand the cutesy for cutesy sake pulp that makes up 90% of the genre. And definitely try Rallisport 2...I don't undertand how without truly sucking you'd oversteer too much.

I'll rent out Knight of the Old Republic and Morrowind to see how I like them. I checked the games out and they seem to have potential... I played a lot of pen & paper roleplaying games growing up and Morrowind reminds me of that, so there's a plus.

I'll also try Theif 3 and Conker when it's released. I've heard bad things about Theif 3 though... but since I've never played the first 2 maybe I won't see the flaws (if there really are any).

Thanks again guys.

Oh, Enclave
I'm serious, if you don't buy Enclave I'll do something bad to you and your family. It's part Fable, part Prince of Persia, part all in a class by itself. I'm serious

Buy Enclave or die. Anyone who has beat it will vouch.

If you like action-horror games, pick up the first Buffy game. It has REALLY good combat, some great tomb-raiding components, and is generally quite a polished product.

Amen!
Oh, and since you seem to like horror games, check out Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Director's Cut.

Some of the older stuff is really cheap, especially pre-owned, and still excellent.

Crimson Skies, Splinter Cell, PGR2, Burnout 3, Chronicles of Riddick, Top Spin, Knights of the Old Republic, Jedi Outcast (or the newer, Jedi Academy), Ninja Gaiden, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future.

They're the ones I'm certain of. I bought Halo. I'm not going to recommend it, because it's personally not my thing. I've tried to like it. I got it cheap so I'm not going to moan about it. You will find many people who will recommend you both Halo titles though, so it's not like it's an acquired taste. I didn't get into Metal Arms: Glitch in the System either, you wouldn't believe how many times I had that recommended to me on IGN boards. Prince of Persia sucks after one play through IMO, but there are big fans of that here too. You can only go with your gut I guess. But the names cropping up most in this thread are sure-fire, objectively great gaming.

I just bought an XBox myself for Thanksgiving.

So far I've got:

Fatal Frame
Gun Valkyrie
Halo
NCAA Football 2005 / Top Spin (came w/system)
Project Gotham Racing
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Tony Hawk's Underground (freebie with system)

Will be grabbing a bunch of the sequels to the above + JSRF (yeah i know, it's weak compared to JSR, but still alright) and Orta another time.

Definetly a great start. Although JSRF is weak compared to JSR, it is still a great game on it's own merits. Definetly pick up Orta, and you make want to check Shenmue II as well.

If you haven't got it for other consoles already, I'd say get Beyond Good & Evil. It's dirt cheap and definitely worth the price.

There are planes in that level that you can switch off to. The designers didn't put one copter in there. I did it with a regular plane but it was a pain in the arse. If you tell me to start with the copter, well I would imagine it would be fairly easy to get your copter shot up because of it's low resilence and you would then have to switch off to a regular plane anyway.

I would definetly second this. I felt extremely guilty after buying it for only 20 bucks.

i don't know what you mean. i played through that level a few times with a regular plane and could never make it through the caves. but then someone told me to use the copter and the level was much easier, here's what you do...

when you first start the main level use any plane you want, but before you go through the caves go and get the copter by going back to your big ship and exchanging. then go through the caves until you come into one of the openings where you have to fight, then quickly find a plane on the ground somewhere and exchange with it and fight all the bad guys and kill them all, then exchange it back with the copter before advancing through the next part of the caves. continue doing this until you finish.

i believe this is how the level was meant to be played actually. its quite easy using that method and really fun. try it yourself and see.

Thief 3 is great, it's the 2nd best of the series gameplay wise and the story doesn't fall apart in the end like it did in Thief 2.
