I picked up a Radeon 9800 Pro yesterday, and after a few moments of initial disappointment, I played UT at 4xAA and 8xAF at a high frame rate, I got over that really damned quick. Never thought I'd see the day when I had an ATi card in my machine. :/
 
Yeah, I ordered myself the same card. Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro. Only €200 :)


It should be here in 10 days or so, just in time for the big LAN-party :D Should be a BIIIIG step up from the 9000 Pro I have in this rig right now
 
Yeah it's great guys. I got one on the cheap after my 9600XT crapped out trying to run WoW. I wanted one of those new nvidia cards (forget the name, it's been five years) but my poxy 200w computer psu couldn't handle it so they offered my a 9800 Pro instead. Happy days are here again.

My computer is 8 years old. It takes about 10 minutes to start up, and if I want it to work properly I need to leave it for about 15 minutes or else it'll lag. Sometimes the pressure of having mutiple tabs up on firefox will make it lag very slowly. Also, yesterday I changed my display picture and it lagged my computer to a complete fault, after awhile it got better but then a warning came up about the virtual memory.

I thought this was one of those situations where the card manufacturers ran out of number series to name their cards and went full circle and used the numbers from the older ranges again.

I was running the Radeon 9800 Pro as recently as two months back but the fan crapped out and I swapped in an even older GeForce Ti4400 card.

I thought that at first, then I just assumed I wasn't up to date on video card naming conventions and the 9800 Pro didn't actually come out a long time ago, but I was remembering something similar. :lol
 
I was running a 9800 pro till last year, when it overheated and I bought a cheap X1550 to replace it.
 
Count me in the group who had a 9800 Pro crap out. Replaced it with a lower Nvidia a while back. I gave that computer to my sister and now run with my x1600 MBP.
 
It was really weird seeing myself as the first reply. At first I thought someone had swiped my avatar. I'm still running that same 2500+ in my desktop...hah, but I've gone through two laptops since then.

Stop using firefox. It's a memory hog and it's clear that you don't have enough RAM to run it, let alone run it with multiple tabs.

Maybe you should look around to see if you can find some RAM that works with your 8 year old PC?

As the dude above said, it's time to go with a format.

Seeing as it's Chinner, I'm assuming he's being satirical and essentially is "Pulling an AstroLad"...

...that or he's using a ridiculously underpowered machine and would probably see an overall improvement by dropping $200 on a netbook. :lol
 
More like time to buy a new one! I am sure he could find a barebones Dell for $400-$500 new and obviously even less used.

Chrome would definitely be his best bet browser wise.

Was all about AMD & ATi back in the day, oh how times have changed! :lol

If I told my future self I would be using an Intel cpu and Nvidia GFX card back then I would have laughed.
 
The funny thing is is that I actually know the cards in this thread. Around the time of the 9800 Pro and 9600xt is when I bought my first graphics card. I've only bought one other card since then. Some nVidia card but that's when I went back to Macs as a main computer and not just a work computer.

I have no idea what is good these days at all.

I think Tekno should be banned for posting a gaming related thread in the OT. Since this happened 5 years ago, I suggest he be banned for 5 years.
 
Pshhh 9800 Pro, you're late to the game. I have a 9700Pro in here that is running perfectly well. Even gets the job done for Left 4 Dead.

(I can't wait to pick up an i7 system sometime soon)

His story is pretty similar to what I'm experiencing with my work laptop. They've got so much bloatware on this thing, it takes 5 minutes to get to the login screen and another 10 before I can use it. I get into work at 8 am and I'm not working until 8:20.
