what does the 3rd one on your list stand for?

It stands for "In Before Huge Ass Thread", and I coined it way back on the old forum.

Someone even made an image for it

Pwned is still pretty cool, but getting stale.

Hmm, lets think of a new one.

maybe-

bowned?
pooned?

BATF (balls across the face?)

:/

And so, the quest for the new "it" acronym begins. I must confess, I just figured out what the first one on the ban list meant. And now it's gone. Ah, well.

I agree, the acronyms have dumbed down the forum considerably, but couldn't there just be a sticky asking us not to use acronyms as much (especially one acronym posts), instead of threats for bans? Couldn't mods just ask members to use common sense when posting from now on? I mean, truth to be told GAF is a place where a lot of internet trends are set, and without that uniqueness, GA is just like any other forum. There are LOTS of stories to tell from this forum alone (throughout all of its many iterations) because of the users here. All I'm suggesting is to not hinder creativity. On the flipside I think the members (EDIT: AND mods ) do need to EXPAND their vocabulary as suggested in my rant last week in the OT about the overuse of the F- word, hence my glorious new tag... :-/

I'm glad you are trying to clean up the Forum... yet the artist in me kinda feels - uhmmm strange about being told what to express and what not to... It all boils down to ignoring the old used up phrases that are no longer funny, people get tired of them and we move on to the next thing that gets a chuckle. Bannings though kinda make GAF a lame place to surf and post when you start feeling a little less free to exchange laughs with friends.

I guess it gets hard to BABYSIT a group of gaming wackos

We are lacking in:

Patiences the capacity to endure hardship, difficulty, or inconvenience without complaint.

Tolerance the capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others.

Freedom the exemption from the arbitrary exercise of authority in the performance of a specific action

It is sad it had to come to this... But I like it here and I have been to OPA-AGES and seen what no rules does to a Forum.

I do hope you MODS are strongly thinking of what is best for this FORUM and not just tripping over a non-issue just for kicks...

-my 2 cents
I don't like banning friggin words as much as anyone else. Hell, you can still say "fag" or "nigger" on this forum (provided that it's used in an appropriate context, which, admittedly, there aren't too many). We're not banning these words because of what they say. You can still say FUCK and ASS on the forum. We're resorting to banning them because they've become stupid iconic catchphrases that people post over and over again, long after they've lost all comedic reproach. Do you think I, or any other mod morally cares if someone suggests sticking their dick up their girlfriend's butt (aside from Dragona I guess, heh)? Banning these acronyms and phrases equates to squashing unfunny catchphrases. It is a form of censorship, but we're not actually banning any words, nor any expressions that can be expressed in different manners.

My opinion is that these kind of bans kill the uniqueness of this forum. It's kind of strange banning certain words of acronyms even though they're annoying, but since it's the mods's decision I will respect it. And btw can you warn people the first week since many like me don't even look at stickies. I read this by chance.
"Kills the uniqueness"? It's a good thing you're not being melodramatic or anything. I guess we're just another baseless EZboards forum because people aren't allowed to type FHUTA anymore.

Guess which category we don't fall under.

The next person who posts like this might as well riddle their post with FHUTA and IBL, because the outcome is going to be the same.

READ THE THREAD BEFORE POSTING

bandwidth-wasting point is useless since no posts here Cures Disease or Creates World Peace
We post about bullshit all day and all night for ONE thing... ENTERTAINMENT

If bandwidth was a real problem, we should all shut down our computers and let the real Earth Changing people use the Bandwidth.

I'm not challenging this move since it is not my Forum I am just a guest here... I just like to poke fun at what we have become for the sake of coming here... :lol

1) Couldn't mods just ask members to use common sense when posting from now on? Hahahaha. In this thread alone there are people asking questions and doing what I already clearly stated not to do. And that's just in this one stickied admin created thread!

2) Truth be told, GAF is not where a lot of internet trends are set. There are a lot of in-trends (ala in jokes), and there are a ton of people who post at and even more who read GA- some of those people being important/big guys in the gaming industry itself, but GAF doesn't create anything like All Your Base or catchphrases like PWNED.

3) There are tons of great stories to tell from this forum, and not one of them stems from someone using an unfunny acronym for the millionth time. We're outlawing acronyms and catchphrases which STIFLE creativity, not hinder. Posting nothing but FHUTA as a reply to someone having troubles with his girlfriend is not creative nor helpful nor funny in the least. This is what we're attempting to get rid of.

Can we still say "I believe this news......." as long as there's an explanation or opinion for said believed news?
No, just stay clear of it all together. I don't want people to complain about getting banned for technicalities (I DIDN'T ACTUALLY USE THE ACRONYM ITSELF!!). If Nintendo announces a fully fledged online service for the Revolution, and someone posts an opinion stating they're unsure whether or not Nintendo has the proper resources to fully run a service like XBox Live, and you agree with his opinion, just talk normally.

"Yeah, I don't think Nintendo has the resources to do so"

"I feel the same way, which is why I don't think Star Road ever materialized"

"People underestimate how much work Microsoft put into XBL"

blah blah blah

I'm fairly certain you guys have a firm enough grasp on the English language to not have to resort to suckling the teet of a friggin acronym.

What happens if everybody posted a bannable acronym at the same time?
The same thing that'll happen to you if you post one more worthless reply in this thread.

PLEASE ONLY ASK SERIOUS QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS POLICY, YOU CAN FUCK AROUND LIKE NORMAL IN EVERY OTHER THREAD ON THE FORUM

Don't use 'em anyway, no sweat off my back. Just another page in the Big Ol Book of GAF Drama, far as I'm concerned
Seriously, that's great that this doesn't affect you in the least.

However, I'm asking people very, very nicely only to post questions regarding this new policy if they have them.

Please do not post anything other than that in this thread.

I am using my serious face when I type this.

Serious face.

Please do not post anything other than questions regarding this new policy in this thread.

and now in caps

PLEASE DO NOT POST ANYTHING OTHER THAN QUESTIONS REGARDING THIS NEW POLICY IN THIS THREAD!

hell, lets underline it

PLEASE DO NOT POST ANYTHING OTHER THAN QUESTIONS REGARDING THIS NEW POLICY IN THIS THREAD!

and to top it off

PLEASE DO NOT POST ANYTHING OTHER THAN QUESTIONS REGARDING THIS NEW POLICY IN THIS THREAD!

To the guy who asked why we can't just ask nicely? This is why.

Do you seriously expect people to follow your instructions, Mike? Serious face or not, this is GAF, and admin policy threads that aren't locked usually end up like this ;b

This is ridiculous imo. Sure they might be stupid phrases, but to ban because someone uses them is excessive and frankly unnecessary. It personally doesn't affect me (don't recall using those phrases, at least in a long time,) but it just reeks of "I want to find an excuse to ban you because you posted an acronym I find stupid."

Why can't you just censor them to be other words?

Why can't you guys just stop using stupid stupid stupid acronyms that are the very definition of juvenile ??

It's not a big ask. Unlike Nike, just don't do it.

You could use that rational behind banning ANYTHING ANYONE does on this forum.

so what about this one?
Though I already answered this for you in IRC, I will restate to those reading this thread-

ONLY THE 3 ACRONYMS AND 1 BANNABLE PHRASE MENTIONED IN THE FIRST POST ARE THE NEW BANNABLE ACRONYMS/PHRASES! ANY OTHERS THAT WEREN'T OUTLAWED BEFORE TODAY REMAIN SO! STOP ASKING THIS QUESTION!

Matlock said:

Because this way people can't circumvent posting it by adding [ b] [ /b] inbetween two letters, AND it'd been made extremely clear and concise as to what is now tolerated.

BECAUSE I'D RATHER IT BE CENSORED FOR NO APPARENT RAISIN

You mentioned that this will not go into the TOS, but only be stickied for one week. Will JR members who join, say, a month from now get a warning if they use one of the three before the ban?

Or are these phrases unique to GAF, and once outlawed should fade in the past? (I can hope). Sorry for the ignorance, I'm not even sure what a couple of them mean (and I read the entire thread).

Down with junior members!

That's the logic. FHUTA is completely original to GAF. I'm fairly certain "SELL YOUR ____ IT'S ALL OVER" is too. IBL and, to a lesser extent, IBHAT are used on other forums, and I'll probably wind up cutting some slack for Junior Members. It'll be on a case by case basis, but I'm trying not to come up with areas where we'll be lenient, as we just want this to stop period.

LOL GREAT POST

Do not post in this thread if you do not have a legitimate question. No more warnings.

Again, to that guy who asked why we can't just ask people to stop and assume everyone will...

THE NEXT PERSON WHO POSTS IN THIS THREAD NOT ASKING A QUESTION REGARDING THE SUBJECT OR REPLYING TO SOMETHING I HAVE SAID WILL GET BANNED BECAUSE THIS IS SORT OF RIDICULOUS THAT YOU CAN'T FOLLOW A SIMPLE RULE GUYS

I mean I edited the first post with a siren and everything!
