In defense of platform agnostism

I understand a whole lot of people lack money and have to resort on just one or two gaming platforms. I also understand that many people prefer to invest in software. I understand just as well people lack time. What I understand less however, is people being comfortably numb with it. A lot of people do not know what they're missing IMHO. When I see, say, GameCube collections, or PS2 or Xbox collections, filled with shovelware, I understand a whole lot less their logic.

At first yes, I was what some of you might or might not call a Nintendo fanboy. I would say, ridiculize my friends who would be stuck with a Master System. But then, they invited me to their place and I played Phantasy Star! So even I had to shut up! And then, I began to ridiculize the same people who'd get a Genesis, or worse, a Turbographx-16 instead of an SNES. But then, my uncle got a brand new Genesis, along with Sonic the Hedgehod that had just been released, my post jaw-dropping gaming moment ever. So I shut my big mouth, and I made a bow never to refrain myself from enjoying good games. And yes, there are good games on every platform, even on the Atari Jaguar.

I got a Macintosh in 1993, first computer that I owned. I got served back by people with PCs who'd laugh at that gay gaming-platform I would have. I got my own medicine! I however admitted it was pitiful, but hey, I could play the Marathon games, along with many other classics that were only released on the Macintosh!

When the 3DO went out, of course I never could afford it. Same thing with the Saturn and the PlayStation, but I never dismissed it as a useless platform. As soon as I got a PC, I had bought a lot of great games, and I discovered all I had previously missed. That was a revelation to me. Since then, I tried tracking down every major gaming system. And I played them, and enjoyed them all! I simply could not give away any of my consoles, because I think even my 3DO has got gems that are not available anywhere else, and thus the unexpensive price on Ebay was well worth it.

I wonder how some people (people with time, money, and preference issues, I can understand), can ignore some gems. I find it frowned upon seeing my friends who will say: Resident Evil 4 might be the best game ever, but that will never make me buy a console! Just as much as I hate console fanboys bashing the PC. PC has got gems you will never find anywhere else, and just for the classics, build up an old PC system, it will pay off big style in the end. It seems however PC games get less and less lovin' each passing year.

When I headed to Compucenter, only to find the Mac section to be composed of only 20 games, with hundreds upon hundreds of PC games, I made a bow to be able to play every great game. Somehow, I will easily settle for much less games, but all the platforms to play them. When I enter Blockbuster, I want to be able to experiment every game I see on the shelves.

The good thing about owning all the consoles is that is makes me and others I know far more decerning in what games I/we actually buy. In the days of the megadrive, I used to buy any old rubbish as it was the only console I owned. Now however I've been lucky enough to play games such as, ICO, Zelda and of course Halo, all great games all on differing hardware. Having 3 consoles has meant that I have ended up with around the same number of games as I did when I owned one console but the quality of the games I own is much higher than it could ever have been if I just owned a single console.

I'd like to take this opportunity to found the movement of Militant Nintendism

Would it be worth it to hunt down the Sega 32X, Philips CD-i, and Virtual Boy? Are there good video games on every platform, literally? :lol

I kinda miss my roommate's 3D0.
It made a hell of a doorstop.

I agree with this and basically everything you said. I am fairly conservative when it comes to game buying, simply because the time I have available for gaming is so slim. There are more than enough great, high-scoring games out there than I even have time to play now, so I usually don't take many risks buying potentially bad or even mediocre games. When I was a kid, I would eagerly play anything I could get my hands on, I had so much time to game. Now though, as an adult with a full-time job, money is not as much of an object as it was before, but my time is. I know full-well that I am missing out on a lot of good games I could and probably would enjoy, but there are just not enough hours in the day. My desire to game and appreciation for gaming is still fully intact, but the time just isn't there. I could give you a list longer than my arm of great games that I haven't even played, and unfortunately may never. To the folks who have TIME, I salute and envy you.

Yes, time is certainly the main restraint in my owning every single console. I've always been a big fan of Nintendo, so I generally stick to buying their systems. However, if I had the time to play all the great games spanning across all the systems - you better believe I'd own them.

As it stands, I own a Gamecube and DS. Nintendo is the perfect fit for me because they don't really release a whole lot of games any given year, but those they do are of very high quality (generally.) That and they're more often than not appropriate for my son as well as enjoyable to my wife.

Any real video game fan who has the time should own them all though and stick to the AA titles at minimum. I always have a laugh at those that own over 70 GC or Xbox games, etc.

There were games worthwhile even on the 3DO. Road Rash, Need for Speed (first version of the game to come out), Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, and Samurai Shodown.

I get all systems now and my time is very limited. I stick to the AAA games, unless it is a niche game. I'm fond of those off the path games that offer something new. Games like Donkey Konga will always have a home with me. My thing is that I get a game, then play it, then it's on to the next game. It's a sick cycle, that I know I'll never break. I like the latest and greatest, sue me :D

I used to be that way as well. The problem is that even sticking with primarily AAA titles, I didn't have the time to play them all. Not to mention, my wife would have a shit fit with me spending $300 a month on games during the big release months.

Alas, I had to sell the Xbox & PS2 and just focus on Nintendo's stuff. I've also got a PC I buy a few games a year for as well. Just not enough time/money!

Unlike most people, who will only play one game for their entire life, or what?

Anyway, yes, owning all platforms is good, which is why less platforms would make things easier. Two per generation as an official maximum allowed by the U.N., please!
