Intel paints bleak picture for Windows Tablets sales

When Intel announced its tablet numbers for the first quarter on Tuesday, it was clear that Android buried Windows.

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said during the company's first-quarter earnings conference call that out of the 5 million tablet processors shipped "80 to 90 percent" were for Android and the rest Windows.

That leaves a pretty small number for Windows, underscoring the uphill battle Microsoft is fighting against Android and Apple in the tablet market.

"Windows tablet numbers in general have been pretty modest," said Bob O'Donnell, founder and chief analyst Technalysis Research.

The problem is, a pure Windows tablet experience doesn't have a lot to offer when compared with Android and Apple.

"Consumers using Windows want more of a PC experience. And they're going to get that from a device that has a keyboard," he said.

We already know (even from MS themselves) that Windows RT tablets have failed to make a dent in the market place. Now it is becoming clear Windows Intel tablets also are failing to take off.

Based on that percentage these Windows tablets sold only between 500k and 1 million last year in total. What is even more remarkable is 89-90% of Intel based tablets were Android and there are barely any Android intel tablets on the market place making those bleak Windows numbers even worse.

By comparison to this 500k-1 mil number Android based tablet numbers in 2013 topped 121 million sold, iOS tablets sold over 70 million in 2013.

Intel thinks it has a solution, though. The chipmaker will increase the amount it allocates to device makers to order to incentivize them to bring out more Intel-based tablets, Stacy Smith, Intel 's chief financial officer said Tuesday.

MS dropped the OS license price from these. So they should become cheaper. Android tablets with same Atom chips have been $100 cheaper than Windows ones in past.

Also, at least in Europe, for quite a while most were sold out. It is only in past month that they became more available. Even now, Asus T100 is sold out on Amazon Germany.

That won't be happening. Multiple OEM's were working on them but both Microsoft and Google got them cancelled.

What a bunch of jerks!

Also Cheebo I'm assuming the article is talking about atom processor tablets but there's also other windows tablets that run on other hardware. Surface line seems pretty popular. these tablets probably need that type of marketing push. Samsung has that advertising money lol

The only other non-Intel Windows tablets are the ARM ones that run RT, which have sold very poorly. Surface Pro tablets are included in these numbers in the article already.

I agree, numbers like this make it apparent why Microsoft decided to make Windows free on tablets under 9 inches recently.

10-20% doesn't sound actually sound that bad for Windows tablets.

It isn't 10-20% of Tablet sales. 10-20% of intel tablets. Which is a tiny market. Since the vast majority of Android tablets are ARM based. Android and iOS together sold about 200 million tablets in 2013, the number of Intel Windows tablets last year were between 500k and 1 million.

Putting it into perspective like that certainly paints a grimmer picture.

I can barely think of any intel based android tablets... one from asus, one from samsung from memory >.<

Id like to see more x86 android stuff though.

The only way it's "now becoming" clear is if you made erroneous assumptions up until the point Intel released this public information. Wintel tabs have existed for over a decade and this sales story has been told 3 or 4 times already. This is one of many reasons why Windows was ported to ARM and Microsoft made their own devices. The sales across dozens of devices are terrible. It's a joke.

MS should have backed Bay trails hard. The limited availability of the Asus T100 and the Venue 8 was a shame, as was the lack of advertisement. Surface was never going to be a thing at $800+.

A windows tablet with one of those mechanical keyboards would be the only table I would ever consider, but then a laptop is more practical. And even then my current 3 year old MacBook Air is more than adequate for my needs and vastly superior to any tablet option.

So, why bother?

MS will be fine, they have huge warchest, they just have to stick it out like Windows Phone

Ya for capitalism ...

It's not so bad... if they ever do manage to gain significant momentum, it'll be because they used all that time they bought to make the product more competitive. Windows Phone 7 had far too many shortcomings to reasonably compete with iOS and Android. Today, with WP8.1, the product itself is at the point where any marketshare gains it makes are well deserved. Having it die at WP7 due to lack of funds wouldn't really have been a better scenario.

I imagine people either want dumbed down simple OS and they take Android tablet/iPad or they want a full blown PC OS, in which way they would rather get a laptop than W8 tablet.

There's a reason why even among hybrid devices the most popular are those that are primarly laptop (like Yogas) than primarly tablet.

As I understand it, these numbers refer to the sales in Q1 2014 and they don't include 2013 at all. I believe there were some 2013 tablet market share numbers according to which Windows managed around 2%, which would be around 4 million in 2013, including ARM tablets.

Still can't understand why you'd opt for an Android tablet over a Windows one. Price I guess?
Apps and games? I have both a Windows and Android tablet (the latter is a super cheap one for school) and while the Windows tablet is much more impressive specs wise, there's just not a lot to do with it. There's maybe 10 good games on the Windows 8 RT store, and the few available apps tend to be featureless compared to their iOS and Android counterparts.

By comparison my shitty android tablet has the newest feature packed versions of all the apps and games. Even if the tablet hardware itself is so poor there is at least content on the device.

Well I was making fun of the fact American capitalism fails when it comes to advanced intrenched technologies.

Where as a socialist approach (ie giving them an uncompetitive advantage) actually opens up the market for actual competition improving the products for everyone.

I've given up windows all together. Android tablet for 95% of my usage with a chromebook for the five percent when I really use intensively use Google Docs.

There just isn't anything that I personally need that requires Windows anymore. The Town I work for changed over to Google for email, productivity, scheduling etc. Everything else in my life revolves around web browsers as well.

Windows RT is abomination - we need Windows 8 pro tablets at affordable prices

Microsoft fucked up by doing this RT business. Should've had cheap Bay Trail/AMD tablets for light/regular users be the main driver for Windows tablets, not overpriced ARM/$1000+ Surface Pro devices.

I could see cheap $200 tablets (Bay Trail, AMD), medium 350-600 tablets (Core i3/i5 ULV, AMD) and professional 750+ tablets (i5/i7, AMD) having some space left for expansion, but Microsoft doesn't seem interested in having tiers for their Surface tablets. Just RT and Pro.

A lot of the newer Atom tablets are pretty slick. I tried a Dell Venue Pro the other day and it was smooth as any other computer I've used.

It's a shame that the build quality and issues with its debut marred an otherwise good product.
