So I'm just thinking about the InterWeb and how it's made "celebrities" out of a few select individuals. I'm talking about Psycho Girl, the Jedi kid (Lightsaber Kid), Libby Hoeler, and so forth. I guess I'm not necessarily referring to R. Kelly, that Croatian singer woman, Geena Nolin, or the former Miss New York -- the sort of people who were nominal or popular celebrities and who had their fame/infamy exacerbated by the InterWeb.

I have no real reason for bringing this up, except for the fact that it's a random thought rambling careening through the emptiness of my brain.

Does anyone have any other legendary figures from the InterWeb I can investigate?

The "Hello my future girlfriend" thing actually has a real sad story behind it. The original site featured a real italian boy who was talking about how he wanted to meet other girls his age. He had tons of real pics of him biking, walking around, in a pool, and so on. He was called Faeelani or something like that. The website said that he wanted girls to email him so that they can talk. He said stuff like "maybe you and your family can come to Italy and we can hang out and go see movies!!", stuff like that.

Until..

Until the police raided his house, where it was found that the boy was actually a sex slave used by his parents in a plot to lure little girls to their house where they would be kidnapped and sold in another country. His parents were part of some sort of big gang that traded slaves and sold them to other countries.

I remember getting the original link from either irc or portalofevil.com back in 1996 or 97. We all laughed at how fruity the kid was. Then a few weeks (months later?), someone in the irc channel I used to hang out pasted the link from a news site in europe talking about the police sting. We kinda freaked out since tons of clones poped up since. My memory is somewhat Foggy, i'm not sure if he was italian or rather Romanian. Anyways..

It was really fucked up in retrospect. I hope Faeelani is doing well now :(

edit: Other internet legend, two irc guys:

1- Ripper, who did an overdose live on irc and his webcam while his mother was cooking in the kitchen down the all, his last word on irc being "I told you I was hardcore". He asked people on irc what he should take. He had a big piles of various pills and drugs. People thought He was joking and that those pills were fake. Peopel kept saying "take two of the those, and 5 of those blue ones!", which he did, live thru his webcam.

2- The guy (I forgot his nick) who said he was going to haxor the lamp post that was bothering his sister at night. He was on irc talking about he was going to haxor it and own it that night. Two days later, his irc friends learned the new. He electrocuted himself on the wires. It was ironic, since his nick was.. Sparky.

What?

The kid who did that wasn't Italian. he's got a website now and everything. There was a thread about it on the old board.

I was just trying to find his new site but couldn't. I do remember seeing it though.

Well, there's this, destined to become a new net celebrity for good or bad:

Go check the girl's Livejournal if you dare. While what this girl did is horrible and beyond stupid, if everything is as it appears to be (remember, when investigated, these things can have unexpected twists and the truth can be deceptive), the troll-fest on her blog is ridiculous. Especially with all the morons who are posting porn and not even anonymously. The friggin' police are likely checking out the girl's net stuff including LJ, aside from LJ Abuse itself having more than enough reason to simply smite that entire thread with the banstick.

Wow, that murder just occurred? That's insane. Glad she left some shitty poetry behind on her Livejournal before being arrested.
Ode to Suicide

Pain consumes my body,
eating away like lye.
Tearing at my flesh,
no more tears left to cry.

Nobody loves me,
nobody cares.
Why continue on?
I want out of these snares.

Relief and release,
is what you bring to me.
No more matters to cry for,
I can finally be free.
:lol :lol
they hold the key to my chamber
locked within it's depths.
never to see the sunlight,
and contemplating death.
starving more than one way
soul and body combine,
the pain curses through
sending chills up the spine.
will I live to see the stars?
the sunrise once more?
or will I wither and rot
my heart gone forevermore.
:lol

I think that'd be a necessary qualification as to why they're even considered "InterWeb Legends".

To qualify as an internet legend I have to have heard of them?

I think it's pretty much standard that the reason why they're even qualified for the title is partly because they're relatively well-known among the internet community. Not to say that you specifically having heard of them qualifies them as such, but that the likelyhood is greater for someone having heard of them verus not having heard about them.

My original post was more poking fun at myself for having been familiar with ALL the people brought up in this post. It's a little depressing.

Lime cat? And more game related but does the original megaton count? That rumour was huge on every forum and website I went to, with most of the oil added to the fire by lord federman (willco). Turned out to be the gc naruto game :lol
