I just updated some apps on the phone, and the install process is insanely fast now. Turn away for a sec and it's done. Everything is just snappy now.

To clarify, I mean the actual install, the downloading is the same.

So, am I crazy for considering spending 500 on a new 3GS after reading these speed results?

Tell me not to do it

please
I spent $750 after taxes. You're not crazy enough!

I just picked up my iPhone 3GS this morning from the Apple Store at the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, CA. Waited outside in line for an hour before opening. Restored my old phone settings, and now I'm at work. :( Wish I could play with it, take some video, but that will have to wait. At least all my apps, contacts, bookmarks, music are on it.

One thing that's really strange is it feels like I can move apps around on the touch screen faster when I'm reorganizing their location. Maybe it's placebo effect, but it feels like the page shift when dragging app icons around is faster. Could be the new touch screen too, since my 2G phone was well-worn through heavy use.

No no, it's DEFINITELY faster. Like stupid faster. :lol

I mentioned the same thing in my little blurb above.

Do it

Damn it Apple, where is my push IM app???

I figure ok didn't launch wednesday, didn't launch yesterday, surely they'll launch it with the phone.....

You're not helping :lol

And neither is the super slow animation of your avatar that I'm seeing on my phone
:lol ok you can't use that excuse, you know the 3GS is just as bad at displaying gifs...

My avatar moves at about Mac Safari speeds in the web app now. Seemed to be at half Mac Safari speeds before.

Improvement, but nothing earth shattering in the animated gif front.

It's an absolute clusterfuck at Rogers in Canada. They don't have enough people to process upgrades, I ended up waiting 4 hours and leaving because I had other shit to do.

K thx.
I'd take a picture of the white model ass...but I can't from my phone!

I may go on an iPhone porn spree when I get home, much to the dismay of my wife :lol

Moving apps around is definitely faster. It's so responsive it will actually take some getting used to.

I will eagerly anticipate this moment.
I've literally never seen the back of a white iPhone beyond the Apple/press pics and thought it'd be fun to wait for the 3GS to see any.

I don't know what one I'm going to get, the black is sexy and all piano-shiny, but the white is so foreign and dangerous.

I'm in the same boat. Eating me up inside.
If Katamari is smooth on a 3GS, I'm doing it.

Also someone post pics of the white iPhone so that I'm tempted NOT to get a white! :lol

I basically got the white one only because I previously had a black one, and since they look exactly the same I had to get something different to make it feel new to me.

The white is definitely interesting. When it's laying flat on it's back you can see the white creeping up the sides, but looking directly at the screen you'd have no idea what color it is on the back.

Taking the white in and out of my pocket a few times has shown me that the iPhone can pick up some little lint pieces on it (think white 360 controller if you have one), however the smudges are much less obvious.

Hmm. I'll test it out at an Apple store sometime and see what one tickles my fancy.

I think I'll probably go with the black ultimately. Everything in my office/entertainment room is black and silver besides my Wii so don't want to throw off the chi.

Do we really? It looks the same as the 3G that's been out for a year.

Kidding. Well since I can't have one, I'm diverting some of that annoyance by watching other people be happy. Haha. Also I want to see the thickness of the 32GB model.

Random observation: There appears to be a dramatic reduction in keyboard input lag. Makes typing much smoother and less awkward.

quiet you... ;)

really, i need to see if i can sell my old iphone 3G 16GB for over 400 (should probably unlock it first). that plus my fido dollars and i'll end up paying upgrade pricing.

Tobor said:
I'm not so sure about that. The rubiks cube seems a little faster, anyway.
Killer app confirmed.

:D ok time to back up and set up. Too bad backgrounder doesn't work yet but that's the only thing i'll be missing for a while. I'm out of here. Laters

What happened in the WWDC thread is meant to stay in the WWDC thread! That rabid semen shooting person you saw does not exist!

DOES...NOT...EXIST!

It fucking better be. I would occasionally type entire sentences into my iPhone OG with no keyboard response, only to have the whole sentence pop into existence 5 seconds after I was finished.

never mind. The person was just unclear. It's still $100 minimum. But for those on family plans, it could mean your total bill so not bad for those. Otherwise, you should not be paying $100 a month yeesh @_@

I kinda liked that, felt like magic. :)

I upgraded from the OG iPhone, so not only am I seeing the processor upgrade, but thus is my first experience with 3G. It's like taking the training wheels off. :lol

And yes, the keyboard is now FAST. Faster than 1.0 fast.

Don't forget to factor in the finally decent java performance of Mobile Safari. Lots of the speed is coming from that.

Has there been any indication in any reviews if the cell radio is any better in the 3GS? I'm so tired of spotty network performance and dropped calls while my girlfriend who is on the same network and has a shitty free phone has no problems at all.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but how do you do custom ring tones for the 3gs?

Got it this morning, pretty excited about it!

I am fucking loving the increased cadence of jumping between apps.

Was looking to update the wallpaper on my iphone by browser (sciphone.net), it opens the image in a new tab, saving the image, hitting home, opening photos, selecting camera roll, selecting image, assigning wallpaper, hitting the power button, hitting home button, unlocking phone, jumping back into browser.

...in the middle of all that I got an e-mail that was spam, quickly swiped and deleted and went about my business...

The experience doesn't have those little beats anymore where you're waiting for something to load, you just keep spamming commands as the new screens come up and can get things done faster.

The performance enhancement isn't really obvious normally, but when chaining together multiple commands like this, it's much much more obvious.

Same here, although I waited one hour, and had to go, but the nice lady that works there told me she would keep trying and then get back to me as soon as the request goes through. Crazy.

I think it's the people who are going from the 1G phone to this who are going to be most blown away. It's a HUGE leap up.

Does the touch screen normally freeze when its pulling mail?

I have my gmail and outlook web access for work set up on my iphone and sometimes the touch screen just freezes and i cant do anythign for 15 secs until it pulls or checks on mail or something.

Don't say that! An AT&T store opened directly across the street from my office yesterday. The last thing I need to do is spend $300 on a new phone, or at least I'm trying to tell myself that...
