After living with the 3GS for a few days now I just want to proclaim that this is by far - by FAR - the greatest piece of electronic hardware I've ever ever owned. I think I said that about the 3G too but it goes double now.

Agreed. In the first 5 days alone, this thing has come in handy a ridiculous amount of times.

Let me try to remember:
--helped me find a new apartment by not only guiding me around, but by searching apartment listings based on my location (apartment guide ap + google maps/compass combo)
--helped me find my way back from a part of the city I don't usually hang out in
--find somewhere new to eat
--calculate a tab with a party of 11 people
--taught me how to play Go
--got me to finally organize my google and old phone contacts (which were labeled weird)
--reminded me to turn in some time sensitive registration stuff to school



a bunch of that would've happened anyway, but the phone took annoying tasks and reduced them to nothing.

Not to mention I can now quickly check facebook and email while taking a shit!

Does anyone know if the ATT signal is degraded in certain structures? I have a lot of brick in my walls but I don't know what else.

The combination of the extra horsepower and improved software really sell this thing as a complete handheld computer package. I was thinking about buying a netbook recently, but not anymore. What would I need it for that I can't get done on the iPhone now?

Its possible, although to notice that kind of drop I think it's likely you're also either too far away from a broadcast point or in some weird area where the signal doesn't reflect. I remember when I lived in the US it was the same sort of issue with Sprint for awhile, but after a month or so bar strength improved again. I was told they hadn't done any upgrades but it's impossible to quantify what really happened.

Does AT&T sell those repeaters?

I am using a theme and for some reason, when I am in an app and decide to click the home button, my status bar up top disappears. Did this happen to anybody else?

Wow, I normally don't watch commercials but this one caught my eye. It was the first iPhone app commercial that wasn't from Apple that I've ever seen. It's for Nationwide Insurance for an app that helps you report claims. I was pretty impressed with the concept and it'll be cool to see other apps do things like this. Here's the commercial:

I gave them 5 days to let me buy a 3GS for the reduced price and they still won't budge. My eligibility date is 12/12/09 because I am $10 short of the $99 plan rate that makes me eligible. I can understand if I bought my 3G last year for the full reduced price, then sure...the 12/12/09 date is acceptable...but I paid FULL PRICE for my 3G!! By the time 12/12/09 comes around, we should be hearing something about a Verizon iPhone since the exclusivity ends in 2010. Does AT&T really think I'm going to stay with them after hear this piece of information...HELL NO!!!!!

I think when you have WiFi, you still have 3G connection so you're using two different wireless connections at that point. Turning off Wifi means you only use one. Voice is still done through 3G so your 3G connection is still active while on WiFi if I understand things right.

If you're using an original unlocked iPhone, you're hooped for the moment. Push isn't working for any hacktivated 2G iPhone.
People are testing solutions for the 3G, though, that involves tricking the phone into thinking it was activated with a legit carrier SIM, but nothing absolutely confirmed.

Pulling down data constantly ya, but isn't he fact that you have WiFi on and 3G on at the same time mean you're using mroe battery than just 3G alone? Simply leaving it alone, having WiFi on will eat the battery more than having it off.

I'm in Chicago and have 5 bars 3G in my neighborhood now, but 1 to 2 bars EDGE in my apartment and absolutely no signal in my kitchen. I can literally step five feet into my kitchen and guarantee the call will drop. My friend lives a couple blocks a way and gets shitty AT&T signal on his shitty phone as well so I don't think it's an iPhone issue. I've assumed it's also due to the age of the building ie real brick walls and lead paint.

You have to change your IMEI number to a different type of phone. Even without a contract, AT&T policy is iphone=data plan. In fact if you took it off, it'd automatically be put back on in a day or two. Gotta change the phone that's registered to turn the plan off.

3G rapes your battery. On my 3G I get 6 hours of heavy use on edge and I am lucky to get to a little more than 3 hours on 3G.

It should push it. Reset your phone and see if that helps.
