Unless your 3 year old phone has tap to focus and video editing, the 3GS is still the winner.

Yep, that "must spend over $99" thing is b.s. When they announced it on Wednesday that little detail was pretty far down the page so I got excited I'd be offered the lower price. Of course when my eligibility didn't change via the website I emailed with an AT&T rep to find out what the deal was. He looked at my account and confirmed that yeah, since I don't spend more than $99 on my plan that I wasn't eligible.

Oh well. It's not that big a deal since I'm planning to offload my 3G on ebay and I'm sure I'd be able to get at least $200 for it (which is the difference in price for the ineligible with new contract).
 
EPIC AT&T WIN

My upgrade eligibility date isn't until August 18 (I have a Blackjack 2) but after calling a core AT&T store and asking they move my upgrade eligibility date up so I can get the iPhone 3GS day 1 I found success.

A few minutes after my request the girl came back on the phone and said that it was my "Lucky Day". It just so happens the District Manager was there and that is the only person who can do this sort of thing.

...I'm sure mentioning I was thinking of leaving AT&T helped....

So I gave my father the $, he walked into an AT&T store this morning and bought the Black 16 gb 3GS. It's waiting for me at my house RIGHT NOW.

This is going to be a looooong day at work....
 
Dumb question time: If I had a stack of iPhones, could I just put my sim card in any one of them and have it work? Is there any contacting AT&T involved? I can't justify spending $500 on the new phone, but I could sell the old one on eBay (looks like people are getting at least $300 for them) and just slap my sim card in the new one, right?
 
Fuckin Apple. They rail on developers to get their apps 3.0 ready, then they can't deal with the mass of updates of submitted apps. Beejive says they submitted 3.0 app LAST WEEK and it still hasn't been approved.

Just got back with my 3GS 32GB in White.

750 bucks down the drain...but my contract with ATT still winds down instead of starting over baby!

Haven't had ANY time to play with it yet aside from a minute of walking around the mall with it.

Took a video, video looked good.
Took a photo or two, tap focusing was great.
Used the compass, had to do the secret infinity air motion to get it working but it worked good.
On the car ride home I d/l'd Pandora and listened to that, and I'm currently syncing the SOB up right now.

Can't wait to put this thing through the paces!

...oh...and Eaten by a Grue: There was no Ghostbusters for the 360 at the KOP Best Buy!
 
Does anyone have the link to the iPhone app thread that was just created a few days ago? Not the one from last year. I can't find it with search.

edit: Nevermind, I found it even though the title contains 4 valid search times I had already tried :lol

I have a 3G, but I didn't want to extend my ATT plan by another 2 years (cause I fucking hate them!), so I opted to spend more now and have my contract end gracefully right around when the next iPhone comes out.

If there's a Verizon version, I don't have to worry about cancelling my contract with ATT, as it will naturally end.

I'm basically rolling the dice that within the next 2 years some other carrier will get iPhone, and I'm pretty sure I'm rolling with loaded die in my favor!

Apps seem to sync to the phone WAYYY faster. The bar is at about halfway already (for 60 apps) after 10 minutes. This sync used to take 2-3 hours.

Pixel peeping those images at full size, they get rather grainy and blotchy, so I don't think it would get me to drop a regular P&S camera just yet, but it's a nice step up.

I'm wondering that too. After I upgraded I went to snag a long song I couldn't get before, and it's still saying I can't get it because it's over 12 megs. >__<
 
If anybody is wondering, you get just a tad over 29GB of free space on a 32GB iPhone 3GS. I got 29.13GB but I think the actual free space might be a bit higher because I checked after activating my phone, and it had already pulled down all my mail/calendar/etc stuff from MobileMe & my office's Exchange server. I'm loading up my music right now (only the 7GB of it that I had on my old iPhone though, I'll do the rest later. I need to pick and prune the list of what goes on the phone and what doesn't).
 
God I want to get this so bad, but I don't want to spend $400 on the damn thing.

It's gonna be a long time til August 16th when I can get it for $199.
 
So much free space on my phone now. I'm reorganizing my smart playlists to take advantage of it, and I added a few more movies, and I still have 15.6 GB left. :D

I'm going from 8 to 32GB and it's like woah. I don't feel like I'll ever have to worry about space. I finally have enough room to sync video podcasts to my iPhone!

Shit seriously? I was looking forward to that more than MMS or Copy+Paste =/ So tired of streaming podcasts when I could just download it instead. 3G is so much more stable for me than WiFi.

Does jailbreaking fix this?

Dude that was my situation. Call various company stores and ask them to move your upgrade eligibility date up...Perhaps tell them you are planning on dropping AT&T..

This is what I did and it worked!

(This assuming you are spending $99 a month or whatever)

I walked around my house for exactly one minute(no, I'm not uploading it :lol ), and the file was 26.8 MB.
 
God damn do I love the new buttery smoothness of the 3GS.

When you go to move the icons in Springboard it runs the sliding icon animations and shaking much more smoothly. Jumping in and out of apps rapidfire is a joy and a breeze. The internet browser is ACTUALLY better. No clue if I'm in a 7.2 mbps area or if it's the rendering of the pages, but even that is much nicer than before.

Voice Control in my car worked great, called my wife and my sister, had it manually dial a number and play artists without a hitch. Only gripe about voice control is that it doesn't seem like I can get it to play a specific song, just an artist. This would be perfect, as I could just say "play this song", "play more like this", and bam, have a genius playlist without having to look at the phone.

Looking forward to my first opportunity to take some pictures or some video and uploading straight from the phone.

This kind of random with labor union density what it is in the US, but all union members in the US (any union: Teamsters, Teachers, Government workers, etc.) can get a 10% discount on their iPhone contract with AT&T. I assumed promotional discounts didn't apply to iPhone contracts, but I guess some do. I'm gonna save about $20/month going forward on my year old 3G contract, woot.
 
Line is pretty short here at my local ATT store, nowhere near as bad as the previous two years. Moving slowly though due to typically clueless employees.

32gb black for me!

PS GAF web app doesn't support landscape keyboard, what up with that?

Not that I know of.
There was a thing that was expected to allow this, it would trick the phone into thinking it was on wifi when it was on 3G or Edge, but it only worked with Frinq so you could make skype calls on 3G.

Syncs to iPhoto just like regular pics. I imagine Windows would just use the Windows import wizard.

Yes you can. Just click on a game, and there should be a store availability that you can click somewhere around the website availability indicator. This is for in store pick up. Easiest thing to do is also pretend you want to do in store pick up and go through the motions to see if it will let you buy it that way. I use that all the time to check stock. Although I heard recently they have to have like a minimum of 2 or 3 copies for it to show available on the website but I'm not sure if that's true or not.
 
Anyone know if you can activate voice control through a bluetooth headset? If not can you at least use the bluetooth mic on the headset or is it only the mic on the phone itself?

My friend just tried this. You can't activate it via the headset. I dunno if you can activate it via the home button and then speak into the headset.
