Am I the only one going bareback? Went bareback with the OG iphone too.

I am. I hate the bulkiness and texture of cases, and as there's no chrome or anything on the iPhone, it'll hold up fine. I went bareback with my iPod Touch and the chrome bit saw a lot of beating (in the form of hair line scratches) but this is plastic so should be fine.

Same here. The glass on the screen doesn't scratch and the back of the screen doesn't really scratch much either (it smudges easily but you can just wipe those off). After a year of heavy use on my iPhone 3G I've only got a few tiny scratches on the silver Apple logo on the back.

I think a case is more hassle than it's worth - it makes the phone bulkier and heavier, often times more uncomfortable to hold, and makes it more of a pain to sync/dock.

I've got a 3G w/ screen scratches. The "no scratch screen" is a myth.

That looks good, but $30?

damnit.

A bit cheaper on Amazon, no tax, free shipping:

It really was the best minimal clear case I could find. I'd be all ears for another since my wife wants to replace her case (she got a different one), but it's worked great for the last year. I like how it leaves the whole face totally open unlike a lot of others. One thing to be careful about is access to the slient ringer switch. The first clear case I got made it really hard to toggle the ringer back on cuz there was no room to get an angle on the switch. Oh ya, another thing it does is fits in a lot of docks since the bottom of the case is flush with the bottom of the phone.

I'm not sure what caused your screen to scratch but it must be a pretty rare case. I don't baby my phone at all and the screen is in perfect condition a year later. There's a ton of videos showing how scratch-resistant the screen is too.

So I just purchased an episode of a TV show on my iPhone via wifi. It's not letting me transfer the video to my computer. In other words, is the only way to have a purchased video on both devices to make sure you buy the video on the computer, where you can then transfer it to your phone? Stupid if true.

does nobody use plastic covers? i dont like the bulkiness of cases either, so i moved to full body covers. bodyguardz brand is amazing, and 90% of people dont even realize its there. i

i was reminded of its worth when i sold my first iphone after over a year of using it. the iphone looked brand new, not one scratch anywhere.

When I bought my iPhone3G last summer I asked the dude who was setting up my phone what type of case he would recommend. He first asked if I was going to carry it on my hip or in my pocket. I said in my pocket and he recommended the iPhone3G Contour HardSkin case. Best 30 dollars I've ever spent. I cannot tell you how many times I've had my iPhone hooked up to my Aux jack in my car only to get out and forget that it was in my lap to have it land on the asphalt. This rubber casing absorbed the scratches and doesn't look busted even when it's been scratched up. Oh and kudos to the Apple employee, he really was awesome.

Got a 32gb yesterday, I have one question is that the speakers at the bottom, the sound only seems to be coming out one of them (the left). Is this normal? btw it is amazingly fast, I had a iPod touch 1st gen before and I can't use it now as it's too slow.

The other one's a mic.

haha, welcome to 2 years ago =P everyone had the same question. the iphone does not have stereo sound. there is only 1 speaker. the other hole is the mic. enjoy!

edit: of course i was beaten, as always

so now that 3.0 is out what MUST HAVE apps are out and what is coming?

any MSN app out there yet that can be run in the background while I brows the web?

if not then is there a MSN app that can be used even if the iPhone is in sleep mode?
so if someone text me over MSN while the phone is asleep I get a Vibration or a sms alert instantly when that person wrote to me over MSN

How does that even stay on? It's hard to tell from the pic.

That's actually a really shitty pic. You just slide the phone in like any other case. Here's a pic I just snapped of mine.

BeeJive keeps you connected for up to 24 hours even when the app is closed. There's an update pending approval that will provide push notifications too.

MobileCrunch has a writeup of it here if you're interested: http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/06/18/first-look-beejive-30-for-iphone/

Can someone tell me how aptBackup is supposed to work? I installed it prior to doing a restore, and selected Backup. It just has a backing up message, no confirmation.

I assume this all worked well and good. So I do a backup in iTunes like it says.

After restoring to 3.0, I install aptBackup and select Restore. It goes through it's restore process, including rebooting and whatnot. After reboot, none of my previously installed packages show up in Cydia as installed still.

Do I have to try recall from memory the stuff I've installed now? WTF?

Also, where the option to toggle the numerical battery percentage? The screenshots over at Apple don't have it, so I assume it can be switched off...?

Settings > General > Usage, only on the 3GS though.

iPhone 3.0 Preparation
1) Apt backup probably will not work reliably. Some packages are not going to install on 3.0 and I do not know if it is graceful about failures.

As my (non-iPhone) contract ran out with O2 a few months ago, I didnt renew it immediately as I wanted to see what Apple would annonce at WWDC and they didnt disappoint. The 3GS looks like a great buy for someone like me who has never owned an iPhone (not because of any anti-Apple sentiment - just because I already had a contract and a phone I was happy with).

Three questions for the iPhone aficionados in this thread:

1. How long did it take for the 3G contract price to drop in the UK? I dont feel a pressing need to get a 3GS at the moment and it would be interesting to see when the 3G starting dropping in price as an indicator of whether the 3GS would do the same.

2. I have been looking at the cases in this thread and this one in particular

If you want one that's even more inconspicuous, check out the Power Support Air Jacket.

http://www.powersupportusa.com/product/show/clear-air-jacket-for-iphone-3g

looks fantastic. Are there any similar minimalistic cases available in the UK?

3. Has anyone had experience with a white iPhone with a case? I love the look of the white one (really stands out) but I know how much of a dust magnet white electronics are. Does the presence of a case such as the one above mitigate that to any extent?

Just noticed this morning there's a few dead pixels on my iPhone 3G. Sigh. Is it even worth bringing in for a couple dead pixels and is it covered under the manufacturer's year warranty?

Are there any sporting update aps? I'm after something that will provide live updates for pretty much every major sporting event in the world as well as local domestic leagues, i.e. NBA, English Premier League, Aussie Rules Football etc.

Anyone know of a good solar Charger for iPhone?

Im heading out in the mountains for 1 week and it would be super cool to be able to charge my iPhone with a solar carger once the battery runs out

Wow...the speaker is a bit too loud now. The audio starts clipping pretty badly if you have it turned all the way up (at least for the ringers it has).

Honestly, that's a good thing. I've turned the ringer down a bit, but I know I can jack it up more if I'm in a noisy environment.

Before, I missed so many calls not being able to hear the phone ring.

You don't have it set to vibrate when it rings? I agree though, better to have it set to too high than set to too low as it was with the original iPhone.

Anyway, I hope I'm not speaking too soon here but most of the issues I was complaining about a few pages back don't seem as prevalent with 3.0. The phone seems to be running smoother in general with the exception of the amount of time it takes to backup. Pushing 30 minutes at times, which is ridiculous considering all the possible interruptions that may occur during that time. AT&T still sucks unfortunately.

I'd also be interested in a solar powered charger for the iPhone!

Got mine yesterday and only started playing with it this morning. Loving it, the speed is the best thing, everythings a lot quicker and useable now. Saving £250 over 2 years as well thanks to O2 Open 30% discount, definitely worth tracking down someone who has access to this, they can share it with a few friends.

I even paid for some apps, something I wouldn't even consider before. Only 59p ones mind.

Gonna go play with it some more now! woohoo!

I'm more worried about damaging the speaker!

I agree that the extra volume is good, but can that little thing take it?!

So I talked to a regional manager of AT&T the other day (Thursday) and he told me that he's been hearing rumors that they're going to be dropping the price of select plans by $15 dollars.

Anyone else heard this? I'm 99.9% sure he's just pullin shit out his ass.....but I so want to believe.

It should be fine. I have it set at about 80% and reserve cranking it up to 11 for the special occasions.

I just had to use an extensive copy/paste for the first time in the coffee shop here, and it was glorious. :D What a great implementation of c/p.

The fact that you can nab pictures from websites in the copy makes it that much cooler.

...not sure how often I'll do it, but I LIKE THAT I CAN!

...and the biggest thing that needs to happen is that 1Password allows you to c/p the passwords out of there. Right now they are buttons so you can't!

Intentional?

With the OG iPhone, I kept it naked because the metal backing deflected grime well. But with 3GS now, that plastic backing is even more of a magnet for fingerprints than the screen is, so I'm contemplating some sort of skin. OTOH, it's certainly more slip resistant this way, but I only had 1 or 2 mishaps with the OG phone over two years, so I'm not really concerned overall.

I really like the 3-tiered implementation of the Home button on the 3GS, makes it very versatile...once to search, twice for user function (camera for me) and hold for voice control.

Best Buy mobile employees make apple store employees look like astronauts.
This almost understates how bad they are...BBM was the only place in the area that had any left when I finally had a chance to go looking last night and I almost left emptyhanded out of sheer disgust for how they handled themselves.

Yea 99.9% sounds right.

The iPhone plans are exactly the same price as the Blackberry Plans on Verizon.. (Except Blackberry offers better tiers for Txt Messaging on Verizon)

Why would they drop $15 when competition offers the same.

I'm guessing 'select plans' means plans which add tethering
