Cheers for the links to the vids, they really are good walk-throughs.

I've removed my Sim Card, and now I still can't get to the main menu.

So I need to activate my phone somehow with something before installing redSn0w and Cydia. Problem is I obviously don't have an O2 sim (which is what UK phones are locked to), so I need an activation program still so I can access the menu and carry on up to Ultrasn0w and then my sim will work.

Is there a program out there which can activate my phone if I've got OS 3.0 installed on it, or do I have no choice and have to track down an O2 sim?

Again, any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't think there's a way to unlock it w/o running ultrasn0w. don't have a 3g tho, sorry. been reading on modmyi.com http://www.modmyi.com/forums/iphone-news/643991-ultrasn0w-out-3-0-unlocked.html and the process seems to be 1) upgrade to the default 3.0 firmware, 2) run redsn0w (if you're on windows) to jailbreak, 3) disable 3g (settings>network I believed) then 4) run ultrasn0w. the people at modmyi are pretty helpful so if you have any specific questions maybe one of them could help better. the 2g unlock is more straightforward thank God.

Still needing an activation solution here for my iPhone as I've not got a valid sim that works with my phone.

No guide seems to cover this problem during when they are installing redsn0w.

I kind of wish I didn't bother now, as I can't use my iPhone at all. :(

Edit - Thanks bdizzle. As it still is locked to the 'emergency calls only' and not activated with a profile I'm going to go ahead and carry on with the guide with installing redsn0w..........potentially could brick phone right?

If anyone thinks this is a stupid thing to do until I activate the phone firstly then please say. :lol

Not sure why you think it needs to be activated before using redsn0w. Just follow this guide: http://iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4301 and then unlock with Ultrasn0w.

EDIT: No potential brick risks at all dude.

naw you can't brick it. worst case scenario you restore it to default 3.0 firmware and it's back to it's original state. sometimes you have to do it more than once. I know on the mac sometimes i have to do the process 3 or 4 times before it works. Boot your phone into dfu mode (power off your phone, hold the home/power button for 10 seconds, release the power button and hold the home button for 20 seconds, then connect it to your pc with itunes open), and restore it back to the original 3.0 firmware, then run redsn0w, disable 3g, then unlock. if you need to talk more pm me your aim/yahoo screen name and we can talk there.

EDIT: or use the guide operations just posted lol

So how do push notifications work when apps aren't running in the background? With AIM, for example, I understand how your session is kept running on AOL's side, but how do they send the alerts to you without being sent as an SMS? Do they just go through your provider somehow?

Also, has anyone found out with AIM how to disable vibration alerts without turning vibrate off on the phone entirely? I guess I'll just have to look into one of the other IM apps even though I only use AIM.

My understanding is that there must be a background process checking for notifications from Apple. Developers work with Apple to provide push services. Something from the developer's servers calls up Apple's servers (detailing a small amount of data, including referencing which app), which then calls your phone via data.

It's kind of a really simply centralised service so you don't have a whole bunch of processes running in teh background. A pretty elegant solution, I thought.

I've carried on with the guide, but now it just sits on the redsn0w install saying 'waiting for reboot' and gets no further.

Like I said, I have no way of accessing itunes beforehand like in the guide to set a name for the phone. If I enter DFU mode and then connect to itunes will it allow me to do this and to see the phone info, as I believe that is all I need to do.

Have you tried un-installing and then re-installing beejive coupled with an iPhone reboot? I've been using it all morning and push comes through almost instantly for me. I have people on MSN, Yahoo, Google and Facebook chat. They all seem to be fine for me. I'm also connected through 3G only and no wifi.
I tried doing that last night but I might just do it again in hopes that it will fix it or at least improve it.

Are you using redsn0w 0.7.1 or 0.7.2? I believe that re-boot problem was fixed in the latter.

Yep, 0.7.1 I'm using.

Will grab the other version and post back shortly, just restoring phone currently. Cheers for the help as well man.

Edit - It's still sitting doing nothing with the 'Waiting for reboot' message with 0.7.2. Doesn't look like this is going to happen at all then without activating it somehow beforehand. fuuuuck!

This was just posted on twitter by Beejive:

Yahoo issues have been resolved - please log out of your all your accounts, close BeejiveIM and re-log in. Thanks!

So I decided to try Premier themselves since the number I was given in the email was for another division of AT&T apparently. They were blown away by the fact Premier has apparently given me a number that's in use by an existing business and I guess Premier has a different inventory, etc.

When I called, the estimated 30 minute hold... it's definitely been at least 40-45 so far. :lol Thankfully this time I've got it on my office phone rather than my other cell chewing through minutes.

Welp, it's definitely backordered.. nothing they can or will do despite the fact the fuck up was on their end. Sucks but nothing I can do at this point obviously. Also, the number they gave me was in fact in use by another company if you can believe it. :lol So now they have to give me a new number too.

Now that I've spent a couple days with my iPhone 3GS I feel the need to proclaim that the iPhone's landscape keyboard is the best handheld keyboard I have ever used, physical or virtual. It's spacious and easy to hit, the popup buttons are helpful and cool looking and I can just type so fast on it...I love it.

Doing a restore from recovery. Ugh. It's having to resync everything. Will I lose my app save data?

If you recovered from your last backup, the app data from that backup will still be there.

Whew, thanks.

So how do apps save data anyway? Within itself? In a separate area for saves that disappears when you remove an app? I mean, it's currently going through and reinstalling my apps.

I'm actually much faster with the um, erm, "non-landscape" keyboard.
I just got used to the more cramped space and one finger.

The mod to add an extra row at the top for numbers was useful too.

Does something like Beejive use extra battery if it is not running and push notifications are on? I have been in Philly the last few days using 3G speeds all the time and my battery life is shit as it is.

Also, does an app need to support landscape mode for it to take advantage of 3.0 or does everything automatically support it? Because it doesn't seem to work for Facebook (what exactly did they add for the new version?).

I too prefer the portrait keyboard. I can type on it with two thumbs, and with the auto correction I almost never make mistakes anymore. I type slower on the landscape simply because the space between the keys is so much bigger.

Not to mention, with all the apps landscape now, using the phone lying down can be a pain in the ass. Apple needs to include an option to lock the screen orientation somehow.

Apps could always support landscape mode from the beginning, all Apple did with regards to landscape was add support for it in their major apps. Facebook would have to program support for it.

Also, I don't think push notifications use any more battery than push already does, but don't quote me on that. It's only 1 listener, so the only extra battery that would be eaten is if you get tons of notifications so your phone is constantly buzzing, making sound, and turning the screen on for a few seconds at a time.

Check this thread: http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/f201/75932.htm

Apparently, some people solved the reboot issue by just connecting the iphone to a different USB port.

After living with the 3GS for a few days now I just want to proclaim that this is by far - by FAR - the greatest piece of electronic hardware I've ever ever owned. I think I said that about the 3G too but it goes double now.

It's why I have no problem spending another $299 this year after buying one last year. I love the damned thing and use it a ton every single day.

It's Vista 64bit, been reading threads for the last hr or so and saw someone come across with the same issues with sitting on the 'reboot' message with redsn0w.

Luckily I have a laptop with XP 32bit, and the install of redsn0w worked first time which I couldn't believe considering how many problems I've had with this so far. Now onto ultrasn0w and unlocking. Should go all fine hopefully for this last stage.

Just want to say thanks to anyone who's replied and tried to help me.........especially you Operations in these recent posts. Nice one.

*Redsn0w doesn't work with Vista 64bit. Use 32bit OS.

So I called ATT and they claimed I could not take data off my plan (this is for a gen 1 iPhone) even though the contract is fulfilled. What?!?

I absolutely agree.

Bah. After a complete restore, ALOD is still affecting me when I install an app that makes it to a new page, or if I rearrange apps so that a new page is made. I'm guessing it's still the age old ALOD caused by a rebooting mobilewatchdog.

I know the 3GS came out the gate selling like gangbusters, but I'm curious to know if there are widespread cases of the phones being sold out everywhere. In other words, can I walk into an Apple store and pick up one up without incident yet?

Just call them.

Inductive charging coming to iPhone via 3rd party accessory - too bad the surface looks butt ugly @ the sacrifice of convenient syncing...but it's a start at least :)

The WildCharge Skin for iPod touch is available to order immediately. The WildCharge Skin for the iPhone will be available to order within two weeks.

Gotdamnt. I can't believe I'm in line for the second year in a row for this damn phone. Lol. I'm at the Apple store in ATL and it turns out that they have some and of course there's a line :-/ So of course I'm waiting.

Why are people paying for beejive when aim is free, pushing correctly and from what I can tell more stable?

Because people highly praised it saying how awesome it was, how the UI was so much better and how much more stable and reliable it was. Plus the fact that it allows you to access multiple IM sources at once.

Apparently a lot of that went out the window with the new 3.0 update. The previous version even had UI issues IMO although a bunch of those got resolved with the update. But ya, I think I may switch to AIM for now till it gets fixed. I was just out now using it and it stopped receiving messages mid conversation while I was out. 3.0 is extremely buggy so it's not worth having right now. Maybe when 3.1 it'll be back to where it was but not in this state.

I just got the Swapeasy Rebel Capsule case for my 3GS and I LOVE IT. Best case I've ever owned for any of my iPhones, and I'm a bit of a case whore.

Highly recommended!

You have to change your IMEI number to a different type of phone. Even without a contract, AT&T policy is iphone=data plan. In fact if you took it off, it'd automatically be put back on in a day or two. Gotta change the phone that's registered to turn the plan off.

yeah, I got my RebelSerpent the other day, love it.

Sheesh, the Michigan Avenue store has tons of the 32 GB in stock. Wish I had known it was so much easier to just go into a store and do it..
