Thinking about getting an mp3 player but don't really keep up with such tech. I hear the iPod wipes the floor with most other mp3 players but are there any decent alternatives?

If you're going to recommend the iPod, please state if you are also an <ahem> "Apple enthusiast" :D

I'm in the same position as you and to be perfectly honest, it seems like those that believe the iPod wipes the floor usually refer to it's design and not necessarily its features. There are other mp3 players that are more feature rich and cheaper but don't have the nice looks of the iPod. iPods are nice players but when you factor everything, depending on what's important to you, other mp3 players may be a better option.

I just ordered a Creative Nomad Muvo real cheap but before then, I was still thinking about an iPod mini. I got the Muvo because I was able to get it for more than $100 less than the iPod for the same HDD space.

I've had a Rio Karma for about a year, and I've been very happy with it. The iPod most definitely does NOT wipe the floor with the other mp3 players out there. Like The Shadow said, the only thing it really has over the competition is style. For example, my Karma has 20 GB and was a good bit cheaper than the 20 GB iPod. It also has twice the battery life.

I bought an iRiver iHP120, and have not had any problems. Battery life is around 16 hours or so. Just don't expect any firmware updates (or worthwhile ones).

DAPReview is a good site with info on a ton of different HDD MP3 players.

I'm saving up for one of these:-

gmini400_icones.gif

20 gig built in HDD and quality LCD screen for playing your movies and TV episodes :D - £250 quid cash in Tot Court Road. Surely a drop in the ocean for an IBM hotshot young buck like you ;)

Best thing is it looks like a shit Gameboy knockoff, so everyone on the bus will assume it's such rather then 'PLEASE MUG ME....LOOK AT MY IPOD'.

Review here:- http://www6.tomshardware.com/mobile/20041021/ - Quite frankly anyone who would buy an IPOD over that needs their fucking eyes tested...either that or they work in Clarkenwell as a Web Designer called Jack.

Ps. Sorry I didn't respond to your messenger...been out all day, forget to set it to AWAY. :( But try DVD Architect for a semi-pro DVD authoring or Nerovision (part of Nero suite) for idiot proof way of creating menus ect - Nero's quite good at converting downloads like XVID/AVI/DIVX to full DVD's - I've done tons of movies for my nan who only has a DVD player with it. :D

iPod excels in style, image, ease of use and interface. And if you want to, you can buy songs off ITMS. iPod does what it does very well, and I don't have a problem with hte battery life, but other players do have more features that you can only get on the iPod with accessories. I personally don't find those features that useful, but if those are your priorities, then iRiver players would be the best bet.

The dell dj, sounds great, looks decent and is easy to use (first gen is better, but bigger) and most importantly cheaper. Ofcourse if u want the best get the iriver.

I got an iPod but the battery life sucks.

Just a note that the 4th generation 20GB and 40GB iPods have a battery life of up to 12 hours, the iPod mini has a battery life of up to 8 hours, and the iPod Photo 40GB and 60GB models have a battery life of up to 15 hours.

Battery life is *NOT* an issue with newer iPods.

Cockles - that thing even has space for a compact flash slot!? Thats insane. Perfect for storing digicam pics on the move, and you can view them on a TV too. Only downside would be video quality, but then you can plug it into a TV!

Very nice.

iRiver, DellDJ & Creative Zen Xtra are all a better player for the price.

The creative has more battery life/storage space per dollar, while the iRiver has more eatures than any other, the DellDJ finds the middle of the road.

I have an iPod, and a Creative Zen Xtra, I hate the terrible sound quality from the iPod and the battery life is absolutely horrendous in comparison.

I recomend the Creative Zen to all my personal friends.

Anyone know of a site that reviews flash based MP3 players? I'm familiar with gear.ign.com and cnet.com.

I've wanted an iPod for a while but have now come to the decision that HDD based MP3 players are too large. Very interested in the Creative Muvo Micro N200. The 1 GB model is reasonably priced, it looks decent and is very small. But some of the few impressions I've been able to find online seem to indicate that the build quality isn't that great and I'm also getting mixed messages on the sound quality.

Yeah nearly bought one last week...but had fucking end of month bills to pay.

It's the same size as a regular IPOD. Tiny. For bang 4 buck. You really can't argue with it. Non the most attrative package....but living in London, that's a bonus, I don't want to draw attention to myself....in the way that so many IPOD owners have of late (currently the muggers favourite victim).

I am thinking about the iRiver... the only gripe I have is that it came out in Oct 2003, but it's still relatively the same price as the 4th Gen iPod?

Cool, just looking at the iRiver and the Zen Touch. I really only want the mp3 player, being able to look at pictures and/or movies. iRiver has the ability to playback oggs but the Zen is cheaper. But they're both cheaper and have more features than the iPod so it's a start :D

I was able to get an Iriver(20gig) on clearence at Best buy for $170. Since the newer versions came out they are ridding the old model. I would recommend going there to see if they got some left. As far as what reviews say the Iriver is the top mp3 player overall. Im pretty impressed with it, battery life is long but I havent tested to see if I hit 16hrs though. It also has built in FM radio which is nice.

I wish. I love my new (4th gen, 20gb) iPod, but 12 hours? Nein.

Got a 40GB at the office and it plays music nearly continuously for about 11:30. I have upgraded the battery in my own personal iPod and get 7 hours (gen 3 40GB).

AlphaSnake

...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
I've gotten over 10 hours on my 3rd gen 10GB with full volume and backlight set to 5 seconds. I've done it more than once. There have been many occassions where I'd still get a good hour and a half out of the iPod with the battery bar on empty. It's usually 3 hours per bar + 1:30 on empty.

Dude, come on now, that's bullshit. I've had a 15GB 3rd gen for about 5 months now, and I am lucky if I get seven hours fully charged. Okay, I take it back, it's not bullshit but I'm gonna be really pissed if there's such a huge difference between 10 & 15 GB battery life :/

I still wouldn't trade it for the world <3

12 hours is still pretty crappy IMO. One of the only thing Sony's done right this time is offering close to 30 hours on their HD player. It's annoying, especially on long distance trips or when outlets aren't available.

I bought an 4th gen ipod to take to iraq with me, the deciding factor for me was iTrip so i can play all my music in my car. I'm pretty pleased with my purchase, even though it was more expensive then other mp3 players but i'm sure there are better mp3 players with more features that cost less.

BS, that's better battery consumtion that what even Apple claims, which is almost always over spec'd.

Mine get 6 hours with all lights off, 2 hours if I use pause and search for music every other song.

you can get pretty decent battery life out of an ipod if you load it full of 64kbps AACs and never ever touch the controls once you start it playing.

for the rest of the world, there are other device designs.

i-River, iAudio M3/M5 and the Zen are all good alternatives.
As a Apple 'hater' I bought an iPod- with the academic discount it was better value than everything else except an NJB3 and probably an Archos player. Battery life is alright 'on the road' as I never touch the controls but at home it sucks since I keep skipping songs etc.
The only time I wanted an i-River was to record stuff for an assignment.
I've also learnt that I don't really need a remote after all my bitching that there was no lcd remote for the iPod.

If you're not in a rush I'd wait for the Karma 2 or M5.

Anyone have any experience or own the Creative Nomad Muvo?

I ordered one last night but it won't be processed until Monday. Just wondering if I should stick with it or cancel the order. I bought it for $179 but with a $50 rebate so total would be $129.99 shipped.

Rumors are spreading that Apple will release a low end 1 gig flash player for early 2005, so that's something to consider if you're thinking of players like Muvo.

No experience with that one however the Zen Micro is out (don't know what the price difference is) but seems to be the goods here:
link
Note: They're just first impressions but the quality and packaging seems very good- very Apple-ish.
12 hour battery life though and no remote but the UI is similar from Apples by the looks of things :/

Wow the Zen Micro looks kick ass. Shame it's only 5gb, for £10 more here in the UK you can get the Zen Touch which is 20gb.

As soon as Creative releases a DAP that resembles the Micro with a larger capacity I'm sold.

H320 will be 20gb, H140 is a 40gb player. the other differences are in features and design. check out misticriver.net

Smegging smeg of a smeg!
I have both an iPod 20 gig (thanks to that free iPod site) and a Nomad Zen Xtra (thanks to Best Buy). I use my iPod more just due to the size of the player and ability to fit in a sweatshirt pocket. I like some of the features on the Zen Xtra more though, such as the ability to bookmark any point in any file (not just audiobook files as on the iPod) and the option to create a playlist on the fly. The iPod playlist feature is pretty weak compared to the Zen Xtra. Tack on that it was $210 for 30 gigs and you have a pretty good deal. The battery life seems to be about the same overall, with 4-6 hours being a pretty fair average.

Head over to iPodlounge.com and read other users' testimonials on battery tests. They get similar (some even better) results.

For all intensive purposes (ie, whiny punks like you), Apple understated their battery life for the 4G models.

intents and purposes

you should never time your battery from full charge to the auto-shutoff. in fact, you should (attempt to) never run your li-ion batteries down to the auto-shutoff (assuming they have one - iirc all the major mp3 player batteries do) or deep cycle them at all.

i think some people have H320 units, so i assume they're shipping... somewhere.

oh crap, i left my mp3 player playing in my car 8 hours ago.

ETA: it's at 2 bars.

i never do.. but the battery meter on my ipod decreases so damn quickly. :(

I've had my iPod kick out jams for 11 hours straight, once. It was noticeably low, so I turned it off. I'm guessing it could have gone another hour. That was also with occasionally changing genres, artists, playlists, switching on and off the blacklight and ONE game of solitaire.

Whatever you do, don't get a Rio. Clunkiest interface ever.

Good God I'm tired. I just sat down at the computer, this post was on my screen, and it took me an entire minute to realize you weren't referring to the plasma pistol in Halo 2.

i think the plasma pistol meter is like a heat meter or something though. (doesn't it run up and not down?)

Yea of course us whiney folk are sure to get the truth from fanboys and thier biggest site to push such an over rated player as they push thier agenda.

Your personal player, may or may not actually get those specs, but the average life from a charge is no where near what you're getting if that's true.
