Hi, help me out. Got my 20GB White 2003 iPod from ebay - no software [do i need it?] and I'm wanting to transfer my mp3's from my hard-drives to ipod. Is it that simple? Or am I gonna have to deal with a grand scenario? Please help a newbie out.

Let me get this straight. I have to purchase music via itunes and those songs are the only files this ipod will play?

No

you can use files you magically found free on the internet.

Add them to your library and upload them to your iPod

Part of the problem is that "iTunes" has become so connected with the online music store that a lot of new people don't realize it's also the name of the free music-jukebox-ipod-sync software.

Or EphPod or Anapod explorer or that Winamp plugin

get your facts straight before you try to troll.

Anyway, iTunes is still the best way to go.

you still need an non-os native application to transfer music files, I'm not trolling is just big cons compared to other music players.

Well it's still loads better than something like SoundStage or MusicMatch.

Besides, it is native if you're on OS X :P

OK, here's a quick tutorial

1) Get ITunes
2) Go to "IPod options and put it on "Manual"
3) Drag the files you want to the library
(Optional) Make a playlist on your IPod by going to it and pressing the + button in ITunes
4) Drag the files you want to the playlist or to your IPod in the left window.

This took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out, so....
