I just don't get the point of the iPod Photo.

I mean you got the display on your camera first of all to show off pics, but you also have devices like the PSP that have huge rich displays.

YEAH! I wanna see the pictures on an LCD that smaller than one on the camera! GENIUS!!!!
True, but i think the real advantage is transferring files from your camera to the iPod. And yes, i know about the Epson... RAW support is slick. :)

Well, I suppose iPod could serve as a decent field photo dump device to make room in the flash card.

Now, with the camera connector, its a great 'field dump' device as you say Shog. Pretty much the cheapest out there if you go for 30GB.

Previously though, I didn't really see the point of it. Maybe you don't have your camera with you, and your camera certainly won't have older photos on it. Maybe its purely for taking round granny and grandpa's house to show pics of the kids on their TV? But then you'd just print them off?

I wonder if this thing only works on cameras using PictBridge standard or all cameras? Something tells me ot all cameras can be used in this manner.....

There was a list of cameras supported back when Belkin introduced their camera connector.

My problem is that Sony are a bunch of retardo monkeys because the connector for my T1 is the dock. There's no cable, you need to carry the dock everywhere. Which makes the iPod set-up a bit more unwieldy than it should be.

After last weeks software update, it would appear that most if not all Ipods now have a "Photo Import" option within the Extras menu. You may need to turn the option on through the Main Menu option in the Settings menu.

So it would appear, that the photo adapter will be functioning with all iPods, which will be a huge bonus. I'd definitley get one if I could dump my photos on there. I'm in the market for a new digital cam, so this will be a huge bonus, as I wont have to buy some ginormous memory card, I could get a smaller one, and then dump when it is full.

Pictbridge would probably be more complicated than some kind of fake USB host method, like the iRiver (H340?) uses. You just need to fake the camera into thinking its connected to a computer, then drag the photos off the DCIM folders, which should be standard.

Most digicams, like that Canon pictured, can now connect directly to the TV.

Sure, but the ipod will presumably be carrying older photos than ones you've just taken. You are likely to dump them off the camera to your PC to make more room. You can leave them on the ipod (at TV resolution)

Still, its a tenuous use case. I still think for recent photos you'll use the camera (as you say). For older ones you'll just bring prints.

Hang out with Steve.
What they SHOULD do is have a Keynote presentation player module for the iPod Photo. Then you can connect the iPod to a projector or TV and display a Keynote presentation. That'd be pretty handy -- no need to lug along a laptop. Of course the iPod probably doesn't have the horsepower to handle all the visual effects -- unless you save it out as a QuickTime.

Nice. I finally have use for all the space I have left.

Slightly OT, but is there any cheap device available yet that can burn direct from an SD card to a CD?

I'm looking to travel for a month or so in the summer, and I'll fill my card every few days, minimum. I need some way to get the images home/stored safely, and every device I've looked at so far seems extortionately priced.

My last resort is to invest in a usb card reader, and hope I can find cybercafes that will let me use it to upload through to my web host.

I think it would be cheaper to invest in digital photo storage device like the Epson p1000 or the one by Nikon (or this iPod thing).

Or maybe get a really cheap laptop with a cd burner.
