Recently my iPod, while connected, has started having issues when transferring songs where it wont transfer them over and then no longer responds to requests and even when I eject it from the computer, it still has the Do not disconnect. message on the screen leaving me with no choice but to reset it to get it to respond again to anything. What's up with this? I was under the imrpession resetting can wipe your iPod if you're unlucky and that makes me very scared. Anything I can do to prevent this?

Install OS X, problem solved.

Seriously though, that sounds odd. I know you're not using iTunes, so that could be a problem. My 3G was having problems where it would up during transfter over FireWire. I swithced to USB and the problem went away.
