iPod mini design fault fixed now?

I bought an ipod mini at launch and mine showed the design fault with the crackly sound at about 11 months into the one year warrantee. Does anyone know if the problem was corrected by apple or would they just send me another dodgy one that will shit out in another 11 months? is there a way to tell by serial number?
