So I recently bought a new 20 gig ipod, got it all setup, been transferring songs onto it and all with ease except when I charge it it barely charges, even when I connect it to the computer for 6+ hours. Now, I have a sony vaio which has 4 USB ports but none of them are hi-speed, which apparently the cable was made for, although it doesn't make much sense for my ipod to not be charging... am I missing something?

Have you tried charging it with the supplied charging cable as opposed to connecting it to the PC?

Supposedly iPods don't charge when connected to a PC (says so in the manual). You're better off plugging it into the wall.

FUCK, now I would've known this if my girlfriend didn't throw out the ipod box (which had the manual and charger still in it)... anybody have any clue how much those things cost? I assume I gotta go through apple for it...

They do charge connected to a PC but only through the FireWire connection, not through USB.

What? I don't have a firewire connection, but when i hook up my PC through the USB connection to my computer it charges. I didn't even know this until it just happened when I was transferring songs. Now I don't ever use the charger anymore. I just charged it last night by hooking it up to my PC via USB.

Do you just plug it in and it starts charging or do you have to do something in itunes? When I plug mine it just says "do not disconnect" but doesn't charge and to disconnect I gotta press eject in itunes.

I have mine connected with a FireWire cable and it charges while updating iTunes or when I leave it connected to my PC.

Yes mine will say "do not disconnect" as well but it still charges (you can see the battery indicator charging) When that message goes away you still see the battery icon charging. If you shut the iPod off (but still leave it connected through the USB port) you just see a big battery icon showing you that the thing is charging.

P.S. Your computer has to be ON for it to charge too :)

Looks like it has to be USB 2.0 for it to charge...just checked the Apple website...here's the link:

Ipod link

See the section that says "Power and battery"
"# Charging via USB 2.0 to computer system or power adapter

* Full-charge time: about 4 hours
"

So do I. It's 6-pin, man. 4-pin firewire won't charge the iPod. It's smaller and found mostly in laptops. My girlfriend has the Apple 6 to 4-pin adapter and can't charge it by plugging it in to her laptop.

Well thanks for all the help guys.

I just called my GF to see if she may have put the ipod box that I just fucking bought (containing the charger) somewhere else that I may have overlooked. she told me she put it in one of the bags i had from a clothing store, one of many bags (all of the others which containted trash btw) and that even though all my bags contained trash, and always do, she told me it isn't her fault she put it in one of them that I didn't happen to dig through looking for something I might need that she threw away.

what a fucking bitch. now she is getting pissed at me for blaming her for the $50 I'm gonna have to drop.

Wait a minute. YOU purchased a product, YOU didn't bother to take everything you need out of the box, and you're blaming your GIRLFRIEND for that mistake? And you're calling her a bitch to boot?

That's not real classy.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, his GF threw away the bag the box was in without telling Santo first. That would definitely piss me off as well.

Oh and Santo, life is too short. Get a $10 Firewire card from Fry's or somewhere, and enjoy highspeed, charging-through-the-PC goodness.

So it's my fault because I didn't take everything out of a box just incase someone happens to throw it away?

Who cares who's fault it is? Seems like an innocent mistake to me. Just fix both your situations so you can use your iPod and get on with your life with your girlfriend. All it takes is coming to an understanding between you two that you'll check with each other before throwing stuff away or what have you. Split the cost if you like. You'll just end up running in circles if you both act like you're 10 years old about this.

Life's too short to be pissed off over something so minor. Let it go man.

In my experience the womens aren't too good with taking the blame.

My sister was vaccuming in the kitchen a few years ago, and she wanted to listen to some tunes, so she takes my stereo to the kitchen, plugs it in turns it on, it goes boom. Her smart self had plugged it into the high voltage plug that's meant for the stove. (Also note she hadn't asked my permission).

So I get home to a busted up stereo, remember I'm in high school and dirt poor here, and my sister claiming that isn't her fault the thing blew up because 'she didn't know the outlet was high powered'. :sigh:. I'd wised up enough by that time to not make a big deal out of it, because this aint a battle you can win dude. Suck it up, grin and bear it.

Grrrrrrrrrr! So does the ipod mini work with USB 1.0 ports?
I've been trying to load some songs for a friend who got a new iPod mini and the darn thing(iTunes) doesn't upload the songs to the ipod. It did update the iPod firmware though. She doesn't have a firewire cable, and only USB 1.0 ports.

Everywhere I look people seem to have mixed results, some people say it does work with USB 1 some people say it doesn't.

Is it just iTunes that doesn't work with USB 1?

Jinx raises a good point here.

Just suck it up and buy a firewire card for your PC. Or get and use the wall charger; that's what I do.

I charge my mini of a USB 1.0 all the time....

Sucker!

Stop acting like a douchebag, this is your fault.

And get USB 2.0 unless you like waiting long periods of time to upload music

This an old topic if you haven't noticed, I was hoping you guys would answer my Qs.

So does the iPod screen say anything while transfering files? The only thing I get while connected to a USB 1.0 port is a "do not disconnect" message.

That's all it will say. iTunes will give you a progress meter at the top, you can't miss it.

NOBODY HAS USB 1.0 PORTS. YOU HAVE USB 1.1

Also, I used to use my iPod with a computer on USB 1.1 and it synched fine, though it did not charge. I now use my iPod via FireWire on my PowerBook and have no problems ever.

I have an iPod shuffle and a Dell Dimension with USB 1.1 ports in the front and the back.

Front:
Charges

Back:
Charges
Synchs for song transfer

I really don't get it. Aren't USB ports USB ports? And if my shuffle charges in the front, why doesn't my computer recognize an attached device, but the back does?
