m4a/aac is the native format of iTunes and the iPod, it will play just fine.

yea, but I want to play the songs in a different format for no apparent reason... I already put it on my ipod and all...

Killthee

helped a brotha out on multiple separate occasions!
The iPod will play anything itunes does, but if you wanna convert it to mp3 go to Edit > Preferences... > Importing and change "Import Using" from Apple lossless to MP3. Select the bitrate, click ok, right click the file you want to convert, and select "Convert Selection to MP3".

Killthee is dead on. If you change the setting under the "Import" tab to MP3 Encoder, that will do the trick. Highlight a bunch of songs, right-click, and the context menu will have "Convert selection to MP3" as one of the choices.

Protip: Copy your original files somewhere else first. Once you do the conversion, you will lose the originals (if memory serves)...and converting from PCM -> AAC -> MP3 is a guaranteed way to make the music sound like ass. After you get done with the MP3 version, you'll want to restore the AAC for best sound quality.

Protip #2: Don't use iTunes' MP3 encoder, it's pretty bad. If you want to do CD -> MP3, go with CDEx or EAC.
