As Iraq buys up foreign arms and aircraft one man in a province northeast of Baghdad has taken an alternative approach to the billion dollar deals.

The Associated Press reports Hatim Kadim Salman is building the first Iraqi handmade helicopter to patrol the country's borders and he's doing it for just $24,000.

Salman is from Muqdadiyah, about 60 miles from Baghdad and the backyard helo effort is taking place in hat Foreign Policy and Army officials have called the "Nastiest town in Iraq".

That field and that half building (wtf?) kind of reminds me of the South Park episode when they go to Iraq and every house is blown up but they still use the doors.

I don't know, cheap shit for scouting seems like it would make sense. Though morale for the pilots assigned to scout would be pretty low I imagine.

Abdul: Hey Hamid, Maybe you could borrow my car for your next assignment on the Syrian border. After all it cost more than your HELICOPTER!

Hamid: :(

I have a dream of building my own sports car someday from the engine to the frame, everything. I will hang this picture in my garage next to the CAD design of my future exotic racer as extra incentive to get every detail perfect.

I wish you good luck! I will refer to this image whenever I need to be inspired and ambitious.

I'm not sure those shoddy propellers would last one rotation before falling apart. I would love to see a video of this thing flying.

Doesn't it get hot in Iraq? If you were going to work in Iraq, standing around outside, building something... Wouldn't it be better to wear something other than a dark suit?

I once spent a week builing a sound proof studio recording booth with a buddy. By the end of the build I stood inside of the booth and he stood on the outside. He asked if I could hear him and I responded.

This is much worse.

Hahaha, oh wow. This sounds like home to me... Jerry rigging whatever the hell you can. I'll have to stop by and see it next time I go down there.
