Iraqi man builds his own helicopter

Well it don't look that much now but it's not rocket science.

Helicopter construction is very old (1936) and you don't need rocket science or highly advanced computers to build one.

Sure it is rather more dangerous than modern heli but still i find it quite amazing that he do create one.

Better than anything I have ever done. Wish him luck in getting it to fly, and maintain flight.

That thing can't fly. Look at the main rotor. Look at the tail rotor. He turns that thing on and it'll rip itself apart in anger.

The only reason that thing would ever leave the ground is in rising up to ensure it killed its creator.

A few decades earlier then that, hops from the 1910's turned into flights by the 1920's even though just about all the craft involved seemed intent on eating themselves in some fashion.

The theory is quite simple, fan on top air goes down its the complexity of the control mechanism that has seen more then a few helicopters bite grass over the century.

Based on the design of the wires powering the main rotor... and well, the design of the main rotor, I'd say he's very unlikely do die from an accident in the air.

I wouldn't be so worried about taking off in the thing, it'd be the odds of landing it at anything less than terminal velocity that would make me crap my pants :D

Yeah reading a book on aviation history, they're pretty matter of fact about it. Lots of people died in crashes and testing out experimental (that is, hand built, non standard, or tool and kit) aircraft in the early days. Of course, back then everything was more do-it-yourself, and people weren't as squeamish about dying and safety as we seem to be today.

You know what? If that isn't wood, but rusted steel... If he compensates for the variance in rotor vibration, gives this thing a structural overhaul, and stabilizes that main rotor, I could see this thing flying. But no patrolling, no. This thing is way too rough around the edges.

I am stunned that he has put something together remotely resembling a helicopter.

I am also terrified for his life. I hope he doesn't have a family

If he's lucky, it won't get off the ground and he'll walk way with a bruised ego and little else.

If he's unlucky it will get off the ground, and then gravity will indeed be his co-pilot and they won't need to bury his remains, he'll do that himself.

If he's really unlucky, it won't get off the ground and will still kill him :P

Fuck I bet it works.

Probably doesn't maneuver for shit, but as long as the engine can spin the blades and an appropriate RPM no reason it can't get off the ground.

Flying devices don't require magic elves or anything.

Making it fly is not that big of a problem.
Making it fly without being a flying death trap is the catch.

I wish I can build something that actually works, everything that I've done until now was plain terrible including my Graduation project sigh.
