Is anyone else losing interest in Final Fantasy?

Can't believe I'm actually saying this, but I am.

The NES FF's are so old that I really have no desire whatsoever to play them. Tried the PSP remakes, but I found them to be a bore eventually. SNES FF's were good; I played small amounts of IV, V and most of VI (completely lost interest after the world of ruin though), but I never really cared enough to keep playing them. Chrono Trigger is the ultimate 16-bit RPG, at least for someone like me who didn't play 16-bit RPG's at the time when they were new.

Before you old school gamers get all pissy, I found FF to be extremely weak on the PS2. FFX was the best the series had to offer on that console, which isn't saying much. X-2 was a joke, and I absolutely hated XII (adventures in AI scripting -- no thanks. Five years for that? Hah!) Dragon Quest VIII and Valkyrie Profile 2 wiped FF all over the floor last gen.

So, for me personally, the only time I can say that I really appreciated FF as a series was during the PSX days. VII, VIII, IX and Tactics were all incredible. To me, these games are the best in the series. What happened afterwards I see as a huge decline overall. And even though I don't care much for the SNES FF's, those games still represented a desirable progression of the series. Can't say the same for the ones on PS2!

With FFXIII continuing to stay in the shadows and probably not coming out for a long time (wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't until towards the end of this current gen), I've honestly stopped caring. I waited five years for FFXII, only to be extremely disappointed by its battle system (if you even want to call it that), story that falls apart at the 35% mark, and some of the series' WORST characters EVER (besides Ashe, Balthier and Basch, NO ONE in this game mattered. Not even the villains!)

This gen has a lot to offer. Plus I know just by browsing GAF over the past couple years that a lot of you still playing PS2 are trying all kinds of stuff in what seems like an endless pool of non-FF RPG's for that console.

But for the 360, Mistwalker cranked out two awesome RPG's that get no love whatsoever because so many people are on the Square-Enix bandwagon AND Japan seems to hate 360 with a passion -- Blue Dragon (best RPG of this gen so far, IMO) and Lost Odyssey (despite its flaws, the best Final Fantasy that's not even Final Fantasy since 1999).

Plus, there's other ones coming like Infinite Undiscovery, Tales of Vesperia, Cry On, Spectral Force 3, White Knight Story, Last Remnant, Fallout 3 -- all of which seem more promising than FFXIII at this point. It's just not worth getting excited for a game that may very well not even come close to meeting your expectations, since FF has been like that for me since X. At this point I'm prepared to be disappointed in FFXIII, and may not even buy it if Square-Enix decides to take their good old time for another half decade. Not to mention, all of the XIII spin-offs I find completely uninteresting.

If you ask me, it's time to stop acting like FF is the flagship RPG series. Most people will continue to insist that it is, but I now disagree. It was, for a time. There's so many other RPG's out, and so many more coming that its not even worth getting pissed over XIII being pushed back forever. It's been typical of Square ever since they started hyping FFXII and I don't expect that to change.

no. Let me elaborate.

SE learned their lesson from FF12, which was, don't show anything until you can release the game in 6 months.

They screwed up with FF12, built the hype too early, and took 5 years to come out. By the time it did, there was hardly any hype left.

Now they've learned for FF13. The trailer we saw was 2 years ago.

Don't expect to hear anything from FF13 again until 6 months prior to its japanese release (and maybe a simultaneous worldwide release (if MGS4 and GTA4 does good enough))

If not, 6 months prior to Japanese, 1 year prior to US

You've made this post before, but to answer the question, no. I loved X and XII. I never tried XI though!

may not even buy it if Square-Enix decides to take their good old time for another half decade.

I really don't know why this is a bad thing except for people that want to use it in "year of ps3" and sales discussions. I'm more than prepared to wait for Square Enix to make the game they want to make.

This post looks familiar...Was it you?

I would have to disagree with you about FFXII, I absolutely loved it. If anything though I can say I'm growing impatient with the advent of FFXIII coming. We have seen next to nothing on the game(s) and its getting frustrating. That said, FF was one of my, if not the first RPG I ever played (Ok maybe BOFIII) and it was one of the first games I had for my PSOne (FFVII).

I don't think I'll ever lose interest. That said, I can't wait forever.

EDIT: Square-Enix is doing the right thing though with FFXIII. Like was said above, they fucked up showing FFXII half a decade before it was released. Now we leap and dive at any chance we have to see the game.

How much do you feed a starving horse?

Just enough to let him remember he's hungry.

I said this in the Lost Odyssey thread, but I think I'm just chasing the dragon now on JRPG's. I seriously haven't fallen in love with a JRPG like I did with FF VI, CT, SoM, and FF VII, yet I still play a ton hoping to hit that high.

How could you possibly lose interest in

?

Nah. It's too much of a part of my gaming history.

It's like a staple. FF2 is really what turned me into a hardcore gamer. FF is in my 'gamer blood'. It's like Warcraft or Mario. I can dislike the latest series entry, or find a new route or experiment distasteful, but something like Final Fantasy is always going to be an event for me.

If that never changed after FF X and X-2, then I doubt it ever will.

XII was the worst game ever made with the FF name attached but I can't say I've lost my interest. Personally, I love the old games still and there's enough still going around.
Am I not as excited about XIII as I was anticipating XII? Maybe but then again we really have nothing to go on there.

Dare to dream, Tideas.

Dare. To. Dream.

Well.. I used to buy every title with FF in its title... but these days that's getting silly...

No I really enjoyed X and XII.

Waiting for XIII.

This. Although I wish FFXII was what Lost Odyssey was...i'm still a big FF fan, and will just get my turn based action from it's tactics series, Mistwalker games, Dragon Quest, and SMT series games.

That's just it. Seems like a fine line at first, but really, when you realize FF has drifted far away from what it was, it's not the same anyway.

Not only am I growing impatient, but annoyed. The FFXIII spinoffs, for example. Who cares? I hope they keep shutting up about them, because I don't freaking care.

Regarding Mistwalker, they've released 3 games so far. One is awful, one is good if not a bit mediocre and one I haven't played yet.

This doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Square Enix already said that they're "shifting their strategy" to worldwide simultaneous releases.

Not that I believe them.

The Last Remnant is the only game they currently plan on having a worldwide release for, and I would be shocked if they stuck to it.

It's not a dream ;)

It's definitely an LSD-induced dream of epic hallucinogenic proportions.

The only thing I'm getting tired of in relation to FF is the idiotic rebranding of every SE project as an FF gaiden and the obscene dev times on the games... I realize it's their first foray into somewhat uncharted tech territory with soaring budgets and a less than stellar selling platform, but I DO expect 3 mainline FFs a generation, you know? We only got 2 on the PS2 (X-2 is the same world and doesn't count, and FF11 was an MMO), I'll be pretty pissed if it ends up we only get 1 this gen...

Face it, Final Fantasy is boring. They keep reprising the same old "steampunk" style now, just like they did with the medieval style in the early Final Fantasy games. Squeenix needs a new series revamp, like with Final Fantasy 7, if they want to keep everyone's attention. They're also completely milking the franchise.

On the other hand, once you see the pretty pretty cutscenes you'll probably stop caring.

Also I hope S-E makes more new IPs that are actually good and somewhat original. The World ends with You is just great. Especially once you get in good with the battle system. Manual attack for me all the way.

Not really, I was in the past, but on the contrary I'm actually getting a little sick of the niche of the genre. Too many Tales, too much SMT, I've just overindulged and burnt out, I'm greatly looking forward to FFXIII and an RPG with over the top polish, production values, rounded content and high end scenario design.

Probably part of the reason why LO set so well with me, although it would've set even better if MW would start teaming up with people who can make polished game engines. On a side note, LO got tons of love, the game sold very well and has a gigantic thread and people who constantly praise it .

Blue Dragon however deserved the disdain it got, it was a mess of a game. Not even my extreme fondness for Final Fantasy V could save it I did appreciate that it actually went the length and had a solid job system, something DQVIII VERY VERY FOOLISHLY OMITTED. But the rest of the game was lousy, ran like crap, and was poorly balanced.

I dunno why you'd lose interest just because you realized other games in the genre can be enjoyable, though.

XII is awesome.

Dunno about XIII, but that's gonna be forever before it comes out anyway, I'll be hyped when they release more media.

I don't want to say I'm losing interest in the FF series exactly, because XIII does look interesting (and I'm a sucker for female lead characters). I am however, losing interest in RPGs that force you down linear paths and offer little choice as to how you want to play your game and its characters.

I too am losing interest in FInal Fantasy. here are my two major reasons

1. The music just sucks now this is all my preference but seriously after hearing ff12's sound track,my ears were gonna puke Also i didn't like FFX's sound track (Go ahead kill me)

2. The whole world map remember when you could just go outside of a town and you can go walk around and visit other towns and secret spots like in FF7 & 8. I miss that soo much T__T . You know it wouldn't be the same if i had to go trough tons of loading screens and linear passage ways like in FFX to get knights of the round. It was very rewarding when you were on your golden chocobo, and landing on the island to get KOTR :D

My interest in FFXII sunk like a boulder as I progressed longer into the game, which is too bad since the character genuinely intersted me. Couldn't get pass the boring gameplay.

My interest will definitely be reignited with FFXIII and the inevitable FFVII:r

Is this a subtle 'Hay guys look at the great RPGs the 360 has' thread?

But if we're talking about other RPGs, WKC, SO4, and even Valkyria are some interesting alternatives as well.

Not that I doubt FFXIII in any way.

If you ask me, the SNES was the overall strongest era of FF, while the PSX marked a decline.

But the classic approach to localizing software may be on the way out. Square Enix president Yoichi Wada told Japan's Nihon Keizan Shimbun daily today that from here on out, the company will be "making simultaneous releases the norm."

Again, I wouldn't take their word for it but it is in their plans to start releasing their titles worldwide at the same time.

No its not. Also they're going for more or less "modern" day games now it seems. Like Versus.

Also though I miss Uematsu's soundtracks in FF games, Sakimoto still did a cool job with all the orchestral stuff in XII. The victory fanfare sounded nice, boss theme, Phon Coast, The sky city, and that native american esque village as well.

I say they let Kenji Ito do some stuff for FF series though. That man knows battle themes.

Basically, I lost interest after FFIX. I love FFIX, it's my third-favourite game in the series (behind V and VI), but I just don't like the direction that the series started to take with FFVII. I still love the SNES games, though.

What's so hard to understand? All I really cared about was XIII, and all of the spinoff hype annoyed the crap out of me. Quite frankly I don't even care when those come out anymore. Pretty simple. They're doing too much milking.

The way I look at it is now that there's RPG's doing what FF used to (and so very well, like Lost Odyssey), FF becomes less relevant to me. Especially when, in this case, Mistwalker is headed by the guy who used to play a huge role in older FF's.

XIII's bringing it back. :)

I was, since IX. Then along came XII when I was not interested even one bit, I dont read about it, not watching any vids. Then tried it just for the sake of trying, and I fucking love it. :D

I think the collective FF fandom subconcious is being disturbed by something. Japan must be sending out an SOS

Yeah, they've been saying that forever now. Also, worldwide means America and Japan, at best.

Sorry, Europe.

I can't understand being annoyed by games you don't have to play. It doesn't make any sense. Look forward to FFXIII and don't care about the spinoffs?

Okay. So why does it matter if SE talks about them? Ignore it. You make it sound like you have to pay attention to every bit of news put out.

Mistwalker has a loooong way to go.
To me this just sounds like saying "Now that they have blueberry poptarts I've lost all interest in strawberry poptarts!"

Besides V, I could never go back and play through an SNES FF ever again, no matter how much of a screaming cheerleader I was for FF4 as a kid.

VI is just VII with the same, but further amplified pitfalls and superior art direction. The fans of it are deluded to high hell though, so I enjoy it's popularity's so I can read inane, rose tinted rambling about how VII made the series "emo", despite VI having the most melodramatic, crybaby, self-loathing cast ever. The game has a fucking suicide scene.

Or how Materia warped the glorious walking Ultima tank system. No one ever seems to talk about the meat of the game, or the balance or scenario design, probably because VI had like ... two good dungeons and the world of ruin was so painful as an example of how to utterly fuck non-linearity that everyone blocked it out.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm hardly a fan of FFVII, I just hate FFVI fans! Game was all soundtrack and glorious, glorious art direction.
