Is anyone still on 56k? (56k welcome)

Whenever there's a big picture thread, there's always the warning. Surely there aren't actually that many people on here that still use 56k? And even then, they can just cancel/jump back if they see its taking ages?

Can't we stop using the warning? It just clutters up the topics, and I'm sure some people just use it as bragging.

I think it was last concidered "bragging" in 1997 when every self respecting internet addict got DSL (or cable).

I'm on cable, but big picture threads like the recent JP boxart thread are still annoying to load... as the page keeps jumping downwards as every picture loads.

I'm on T3, so from now on when I make a thread with pictures, i'm going to put (DSL Beware) or (Cable go away)

I was always wondering if there was a way to fix that.. most certainly a firefox user made an extension to fix that? Or is it impossible unless image dimensions are specified?

I have 10meg cable, but I live in New Zealand, so I have a 10gig monthly cap, and of course, I have to suck dick in order to pay for it.

I had 56k for a couple weeks while I was getting my ADSL moved/reconnected.

Sometimes I slow down to surfing speeds of bytes on my 8mbit connection when I've got about a few hundred to thousands of connections been made with my connection due to bittrorrent.

The warnings are nice. Cause then i know not to expect some pictures to show up for a minute or so. Things i hate are the threads with animated gifs. I went into that thread and my laptop cried then turned off.

I have 56k but I just turned images off in the User CP, and just drag them if I want to see them...screws me up when you guys post thumbnails though :(

I have DSL at home, but I read GAF at work and I'm on 56K here. It gets annoying having to filter out bloated video avatars and unscaled uncompressed bitmap avatars every day. >:|

Yes, I know you can turn avatars off in the CP, but I like the concept of avatars as a quick visual identifier for people when skimming a thread. And in one of the most non-shocking coincidences ever, the people who are really worth reading tend to have more bandwidth friendly avatars. :P

I'm still on 56K. No DSL in my area and I don't live out in the sticks. I can get cable(Optimum Online) but that's like $49 a month. When they lower it down to a reasonable price and DSL still isn't available in my area, I'll get it.

Is it true that they cap your downloads with cable connection? For example, if they find that you're downloading like gigs and gigs of files, they'll put a cap on your bandwidth. If that's the case, that sucks. What's the point of having that huge ass pipe if you can't use it?

Can't you use ISDN?

Some years ago DSL wasn't available here too, but we had ISDN and even that is faster than 56K.

Meh. I never looked into it. That's 128K, right? I doubt that will make a big difference. =/

Kind of off-topic, but how do I change my Avatar in these forums? I have tried both Safari and Firefox, and all I get is this:

Your Current Avatar: No Avatar Specified
(x] if you have a custom avatar selecting this option will delete it.

I have cable, but I went back to using dial-up for FFXI, (and only for that) because it's a lot more stable for that game.

I'm still on 56K. :(

You people shouldn't use the image tags. Just link us to the pictures.

when i'm up at my university, i'm on uni lan connection.

at home i have to come back to 56k. some people are like "well at least you get to have high speed at school. better to have loved and lost, hm?"

and that makes me think of Sean Connery saying "Try it."

The only thing than having dialup is knowing what its like without it, and having to hamstring my net usage when I come home.

I cannot even fathom a 100 Mb connection, damn the communication monopolies over here.

Oli, your download speed is like 4.8 Mb/s which isn't too shabby for the US.

If we have 100MB hikari fiber, can we just laugh at all of you?

Say, how much does that cost per month? I'd really like to get that as soon as I get to Japan next week. :D

Wasn't that Tommy Lee Jones in Men In Black? I know he said it in there.

I'm way too cheap to pay 360 bucks a year to surf the internet. I may be missing out... but you can't miss what you never had.

my internet path:

1997: Webtv 33.6k but only worked at 28.8k

1999: Webtv 56K

2000: Dreamcast 56K

2000: PC 56K

2002: PC DSL 768k

2004: PC Cable 3 mbps

2005: PC Cable 4 mbps

i'm not even going to have internet access for like 2 days next week...two days!! i'm probably going to die. or go outside or something.

It's my effective internet speed, because the wireless can't carry more than that, right?
yea that's true, but you're still limited by whatever your service is set at, which is likely lower than 54mbps.

If you have an extra phone line try getting multilink. (112K)
But, if you can afford 128k ISDN I say go for it.
It's way faster than dialup, especially if you aren't getting a full 50k+ connection.
Your download speeds could go from 5Kbps(56k) to 15Kbps(Dual ISDN)

A single 64K ISDN would give you about 6-7Kbps and isn't worth it in my opinion.
A good 56k modem (Agere SV92P chipset) will connect at 40K+ even on craptacular noisy phonelines and give you a reasonable 4.5-5Kbps.

My first internet experience was on a 300baud modem at my dad's workplace.
It was a dummy terminal hooked to a central computer than connected to the internet.
Everything was text back then, so having a fast connection didn't serve a huge purpose.

I have 10Mbps Cable. Optimum Online to be exact, which is/was the fastest consumer broadband internet access in the country. I get blazing fast speeds, and often download at speeds slightly above 1MB per second. Notice I said Megabyte, and not Megabit which people seem to confuse it with. I recently ran a speed test at Testmy.net and got a score of about 9000k download and 900k upload. Not too shabby to say the least. Yes Cablevision charges over $45 a month, but there's nothing that compares, and I subscribe to their triple play package, so it's all good. :D

Verizon Optical Fiber is the fastest consumer line available now. 5/2 Mbps, 15/2 Mbps, and 30/5 Mbps.

Only available in areas they feel are worthy of testing right now :(

Damn... you're right. Hahaha, I could have swore it was Connery that said it, but now that you mention it, it was Tommy Lee Jones. Good call.
