Is Dave Chappelle the greatest 'stand-up' comedian of our time?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Chapelle has unwittingly become our generation's Carlin, and as such he must be protected. Carlin, and consequently Chapelle, are not only brilliant comedians and performers, but they're also socially brilliant with fingers firmly on the pulse of both pop culture and government, and more importantly, they actually have something to say and possess the intellect to say it without hurting the performance or "comedy" of their show. I didn't think we'd ever have a comedian half as brilliant as Carlin when he passed, but thank fuck we have Chapelle. I have no idea who, in the modern crop of comedians, would carry that legacy forward. There's a lot of great comedians working today, truly funny, but none with the social commentary, story telling skill, likability, or depth of intellect that Carlin had and Chapelle has.

He's been trash since he quit the chappelle show and left for Africa. He lost his prime years to self imposed exile and now that he's back he's just not as sharp or funny. He's more of a funny preacher than an actual stand up comedian.

Chris Rock, Louis ck and Bill burr all have had better specials in the last 20 years ot so. Chris rock's 1993-2008 specials are in another league. 5 back to back to back masterpieces. Chapelle only had that one in 1999 or was it 2000? His show is probably the best sketch show ever made but in terms of standup comedy, he's lost his edge. Still funny but mostly meh.

I don't think there is a competition a lot of comedians have their merits but Dave is a top tier for sure, I wish he would make a deal with HBO to make a bunch of specials again

As far as "my time" I grew up with Pryor, Carlin, Murphy, Kinison, Hicks,(sucked losing both of them so young) Norm and Dave

Pryor, Carlin, Norm and Dave were on a different level hard to pick one out of those four if I had to I'd say Norm

Dave has lost a few steps .....IMO and I will say I'm not really a fan of Dave's recent shit

It is said that the final form of a great comedian is an angry prophet but Carlin managed to keep it brilliant even near the end

I don't find any of the new (last twenty years) comedians that people like funny at all (Bobbie Lee and Chrissie Mayr are exceptions)

He's great, but not the greatest.

I'd say Chappelle is comparable to Kobe Bryant.

If everyone's playing all at the same time on one night and I can only go to one show, I'm going to see Stewart Lee.

He did a good bit about supporting Dave Chappelle, but unfortunately I couldn't immediately find it when I searched so here he is talking about his fans:

Carlin was going to be my pick, but I checked and it has already been 17 years since he died so I actually questioned the "of our time" part.
I got to see Carlin live so he's definitely "of my time"

Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and even Bob Saget I'd rank above Chappelle.

Chappelle is great.

Love Chris Rock and really thought Burr was hilarious at one point but have had enough of him lately

Not too long ago saw Nate Bargatze and love his delivery

Saw Richard Pryor live and think he is the great ever with Eddie Murphy a close second

Nah, he's pretty overrated IMO.

This sums it up perfectly. He was never to the same after his breakdown.

Yeah, Burr was incredible. I hope he hasn't lost his mind. Don't really understand his recent shift. Everyone is shitting on him now and rightfully so.
For those who haven't been following this unfortunate descent, Burr has been getting increasingly "establishment talking points" lately. The last straw for me is when he went on late night television and mocked people who were upset with California leadership when it came to the recent fires.

Bill suggests that coming to the conclusion that this shouldn't have been empty for a year is some uninformed "politicized" statement, instead of the lowest possible bar of expectation for your government being handwaved by a comedian on national television, speaking about a subject that he doesn't understand, because that's what he read in the paper or saw on TV a day or so before his interview.

117 million gallons of water VS 3 million gallons. Yeah, despite Burr mocking those who use the word, I think "mismanaged" is an understatement. Imagine going on national television and defending this. I didn't even bother with his latest special after this.

I guess he might be setting himself up for some sort of political commentary type of career but I no longer find him that funny honestly

Its like pick a lane :)
