My entire life I've heard that fruitcake was fucking disgusting. Movies, tv shows, and even irl people shit on it. Is it that bad though? Never had it before. Don't even know what it is.

If you buy that cheap $3.99 loaf from Walmart, it is shit.

If you buy a higher quality fresh fruitcake and heat it up, it's nice. A good change from the usual cake or pie for dessert.

Not sure how the american one is made but over here people make something similar (which translated would be called "holiday bread") with candied fruit and it's terrible

I've had very high quality ones but it's just not that good. It's from an era of pretty weak desserts. You were lucky to get some lame pudding or Turkish delights with rose water flavor with your boiled fish. Can you imagine giving someone from that era a box of Twinkies 😂

You got something against turkish delights, bub?

I think it is quite OK - German ones are good I think.

I mean until recently most US desserts were

1. High fructose corn syrup
2. Sugar
3. Gelatin
4. Animal byproducts

Plus some combination of the stuff below.

Compared to this, fruitcake is not bad at all.

I've never tried actual fruitcake, but I've grown up eating homemade carrot cakes since I was a kid and they are always good (except when my great-aunt started getting senile and cooking long strands of hair into her cakes).

My father always made amazing ones and got a few cakes at christmas. they never make it through the first week of january.
I cannot testify for store bought more than the ones i tasted were fine.

It's an old dessert from pre-electricity and refrigeration. It's one of those foods that is made mostly to be a preservative and not rot.

Sound appealing yet?

Shelf life[edit]
When a fruitcake contains a good deal of alcohol, it can remain edible for many years. For example, a fruitcake baked in 1878 was kept as an heirloom by a family (Morgan L. Ford) in Tecumseh, Michigan.[12] In 2003 it was sampled by Jay Leno on The Tonight Show.[13] Wrapping the cake in alcohol-soaked linen before storing is one method of lengthening its shelf life.[14]

A 106-year-old fruitcake discovered in 2017 by the Antarctic Heritage Trust was described as in "excellent condition" and "almost" edible.[15]

Probably my favorite candy, and I'm highrider, I'm sure my post history will demonstrate my presence in every candy thread 😂 but I eat kind of a variant of them, there's a company in Seattle called Liberty Orchards that makes real Turkish delights, which are actually based on Lebanese Locum, using local fruits to make the sugar dusted delights. I highly recommend them if you love the ones from the Middle East. I recommend these for a start, probably their most popular, they're unbelievably good.

I've had fancy and expensive ones and I dont care for them. The cheap ones with the candied fruit in them are god awful. Fruit cake to me is just too dense, and it's a gross kind of sweet where it's just too much.

It's not as bad as it's made out to be though. It's just one of those things around the holidays it's what people think is cool or funny to pull out the same old memes about fruitcakes or make the same old jokes. It's like a tradition to hate on fruitcake. Kind of like how around the holidays people for some reason start mindlessly spouting Christmas vacation quotes out of nowhere and regurgitate that die hard is the best christmas movie. It's just a thing.

I usually just buy random ones from my local Aladdin store lmao.

Like anything, if it's made well with passion and quality, it can be decent to good. But most of the time it's pretty crap when bought from a cheap retailer like Walmart.

What we have in the states, at least what I grew up looking at and not eating, is good for nothing more than a doorstop.

Panettone and the varieties the Italians come up with depending on the holiday and season, on the other hand, is not bad.

However, let's just get to brass tacks, if you are not eating Kringle, then you have to sort your life out.

Fruitcake is amazing ! But not buy and eat straight away, I don't like it like that.
I buy it, open the package and let it dry for 2 or 3 days, then slice it and toast it. A warm fruitcake toast with salted butter is delicious!

It's pretty terrible. Fruit is full of sugar so it's not like it is healthy. If I'm gonna eat a cake might as well go all out with chocolate etc.

Feel like fruit cake is a 70s thing from swinger parties and stuff. I mostly know it from tv as well. Imo a lot of gen xers has to eat it as kids

I like Stollen; but I'm sure there's hundreds of different fruitcakes, and some of them are bound to be nasty.

Are we talking Spotted Dick here or just your typical Fruitcake that Americans make?

There is a difference. Christmas Cake usually has Marzepan on it and I love that stuff, but I cannot ever eat Fruitcake.
