is Guild Wars a sleeper hit?

i ask that because i really don't hear much about it on the forum but most of the people i know that have played it really enjoyed it. i've been playing it for the past 3 months and haven't looked at another game since.

for me it's been the versatility. in guild wars you're not locked into playing pvp as it has enough pve content to keep a solo player happy. the amount of skills, mixed with techniques and diversity of effects allows for different ways to play the game. lots of missions, quests, and even a fair amount of character/weapon customization.

best of all, FREE online play w/ free online content. i can go on, but then i'd start to sound like an ArenaNet employee trying to pimp the game. anyone want to contribute what they like/dislike about the game? probably the best 50 bucks i've spent all year.

The lack of discussion about it around here is purely due to it being a PC game. Not many around here play or discuss them (their loss). Its definitely no sleeper though, it had a huge hype train behind it.

Great friggin game. I only wish there was more content. But at least when I get burnt out on it, I can quit for a bit and not worry about paying for time I'm not using.

Great game, I got the game at launch and didn't like my character and got burnt out on the the game, so I stopped for a while. I went back 15-20 days later and made a fire E/Mo named Chef Wicked and found a new love for the game. Having private areas is a lot better than what most people think when they havn't played the game in heard that.

The customization on the appearance side of your character isn't much. Once you get the 15K armor, you can really just use the dyes, but the real customization comes in skill points and what skills you use. It takes a long time to find a good balance in your character. It took me around 115 hours just to get a set of skills I like, but I still have some more to get, so that may change.

I am really looking forward to the two new, free areas soon and the next chapter early next year.

A lot of my friends skipped out to play Guild Wars a couple of months ago but they're now either stopped playing or back to playing FFXI (which i'm playing right now). So I assume it wasn't that great to keep them hooked.

It's fun but the cooperative play lacks the hook that games like Diablo offer. The items and such that the enemies drop are pretty dull or similar to each other.

yea, i figured that much. didn't know there was much hype behind it either. guess that shows you how involved i am when it comes to the marketing of these games.

I bought Guild Wars the day it was released and have been playing regularly ever since. I play every Friday night with a group of friends and regularly on other days too. It's a lot of fun and there is a ton of areas to explore plus lots of ways to approach character development. The one complaint I hear over and over though, is that your character customization is so low in the area of appearance.

I'm looking forward to the free content coming soon as well, and I know my whole group will buy the expansions when they start to drop. We're having a blast with it.

I notice that it has been in the top three as far as sales every week since it was released as well, which bodes well for the game. It's a bonafide hit for Arena.

I have to agree with you. The 8-skill slots really forces you to be smart with your skill set. I think part of the fun is adapting to your environment. In many ways it's a creative process choosing your skills. Some builds work very well, some just plain out become useless. What keeps me coming back to the game is experimentation.

I agree that the cooperative aspect of the game could be better, but that's where to social aspect kicks in. Takes time to find people you trust and would play with. But once you do, it's easy to depend on them.

character customization is definitely a huge drawback of the game. but besides that, the true indivdualism lies in how you play your character. it becomes pretty evident if someone has skills once you're in a pvp match or doing missions later in the game. it's very rewarding to be in a group that knows what they're doing.

not that it's a true mmorpg, but i'd say that this game is probably the most "casual" user friendly of the bunch. can't wait for the summer update!

Played a lot when it first came out then stopped for a while but now back to playing again because a different group of friends are playing. Fun game and since there's no monthly I can always take a break to play other games then come back again at a later date. I'm waiting for them to add feature so that you can arrange your own guild match with your guild member or something though. Less hardcore players would have much more fun with that.

I love the game, love that customization is based on expirementing with skills and classes instead of just getting uber armor and using a generic build, that it's fairly balanced between classes and that there is rpg and pvp to mix things up with.

Lately though, I've cut down my playing time recently because I think it has gotten more popular and with popularity comes... people. What ruins online gaming is online people, and right now there's a lot of asshats in GW pvp, more so than I ever remember. I had been doing nightly HOH runs, but we can't get enough random good players to do it anymore. There's a lot of negative players and just plain quitters. To me these are signs of not having played enough, because if you play alot you see how often the 'tide turns' in this game, so you wouldn't just quit or give up as soon as someone dies. Plus, on the RPG side everyone just pays someone else to run them through everything. I'm trying to get my Mo/N through Ascension, but there's noone to really group with and fight monsters. Just runners and runnees.

I hope future expansions allow for more character slots. I have 3 rpg characters and 1 spot open I keep having to delete and remake for PVP.

The game does need some more varied looking armor. I understand the armor sets are to keep things balanced, but there really needs to be more than 3 or 4 sets per class. Plus, with sets like the Regal set for Mesmer(+15 armor while casting) and the fact Mesmers have fast casting... what's the point of the bonus?

I got the game when it came out and played my ranger up through the introduction area, and then hit the post-searing area and had to quit due to school. It's been sitting on my HDD since then and I haven't touched it. I remember thinking the enemies post-searing were alot harder than the intro, and I found it difficult to find any organized players to group with for some PvE action (and i have yet to try PvP).

I think it's a game full of promise, and after playing WoW for a few days now from the free trial I really don't see what WoW has to offer over GW aside from the persistant world and the $15/month charge. The combat is very similar and the quests are very similar.

After my WoW free trial is up (a few days now) I think I'm going to go back to GW and try to learn the game better, since I didn't really learn all that well how to appropriately outfit my character or anything or choose the right skills to use.

WoW has much much more content than GW (in terms of land mass, quests, items).

Well its a sleeper...

Don't know about hit.

I played it for two months this summer and don't really care if I ever play it again.
