Is it normal for a CRT to "spool" an image at the screen's edge?

I just bought a new CRT television (a Philips 27" "flat screen"), and am very impressed with it on the whole. However, I have noticed a peculiar flaw: when I was scrolling the map screen in Metroid Prime, the image was distorting around the edges of the screen, so that it almost looked like it was coming off a roller (a bad description, I know, but it's the most appropriate analogy I can think of). Or think of it this way: it was as if there was a ridge around the frame of the TV, and the image had to slide over this ridge before becoming flat again.

The problem is not noticable at all unless I purposely duplicate these particular circumstances (i.e., get a high-contrast image on screen and scroll it across the TV slowly), but I am curious about it. Is it something common to CRT's that I just haven't noticed before, or should I be concerned?

I'd guess it's pretty normal, since I both know what you're talking about and think of it as a limitation of the current technology when I notice it rather than getting worried. Like how different sets tend to be off center, or cut off varying amounts of edge picture.

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
More than likely, something like that can be adjusted and/or fixed via the service menu.

Good luck.

What model TV?

I have a toshiba 20" flat screen in my room and I know exactly what you're talking about. Only mine not only has that, but when I play games there's usually about a half inch black border on the bottom and right sides of the screen. I started noticing it a few months after I bought it and i've been trying to find out how to fix it for the past year. I've come to the conclusion that it's just the way these CRTs are, and unless your having problem with regular tv too, then there's nothing that can be done about it from the service menu.

JoshuaJSlone: Yeah, that's kind of what my mentality is trending towards -- acceptance rather than fear that something is wrong. I just wanted to be sure.

DCB: It's a Philips 27PT6441. I don't suppose you know anything about getting into/navigating the service menu...

Edit: Liono: that sucks, man. But I'm glad to hear I (and JoshuaSlone) not the only ones. :D

Yeah, I get this too on the right side of my screen. The only way to fix it is to move the image to the left using the service menu till it doesn't spool anymore. However, this means that the image isn't centered anymore and that you miss stuff on the left side of whatever you're watching, so that's not good either. I've learned to basically live with the spooling, and save for a projector...

Yikes. If that's the solution, I think I can learn to live with the spooling, too.
