is it possible to scan text and be able to edit it afterwards as a word document?

i dont think this is even possible but someone i know says it is.

what she wants to do is have her script scanned into her computer. but she wants to be able to edit the pages as if they were typed documents (word, wordpad, or whatever). is this even possible? doesn't a scan just scan something as an image? i know you could feasibly put a text box over it and type like that, but she insists it would be as if the document would be identical to a word document and so on

is it possible?

I've never used it myself, but just look up "optical character recognition" or OCR.

how? is it done w/ a regular scanner?

The scanner itself does nothing, but the software is able to recognize distinct letters, numbers, etc. I've never used the software myself, but I'd imagine that since they're at version 14, they've probably got it nailed down. :p

OmniPage is the gold standard for Opitical Character Recognition. If you cant afford, find it, but you wont be dissappointed. It is amazing piece of software.

i used the light version of OmniPage back in 1998. It was the best OCR i could find at the time, and simply amazing. i'd scan up documents i printed out that were lost on a defective floppy, and it interpreted the text and most of the formatting flawlessly and in a matter of seconds per page on a Pentium 120Mhz machine. i haven't used OCR since then, but last i checked, it works best with machine-rendered typefaces and not handwriten text.

WHO DEY!?
FMT, Double check the software that came with your scanner. OFten they include a "lite" OCR program.

PS: I was looking at the old Goodcow archives of GAF and wondered why you changed your name from Meestah Spawko.

Damn, I wish I knew about this a few years ago. I had to do this for a bunch of flyers my wife wanted transposed to Word. Had to type those bastards out by hand instead.
