Is Mouth Moods the most important album of 2017

http://www.neilcic.com/mouthmoods/

Released January 23, 2017

With 2017 on its way out, January feels like a long time ago. But Neil Cicierega's "Mouth Moods" doesn't just feel like an album that was released 9 months ago. It almost feels anachronistic, like it's some thing that's been with us for decades. And in a sense, it has, in that it draws its inspiration from pop music charts circa our youth. And though it lifts directly from this source material to create a unique music, the songs are more than just kitsch, or homage, or some vulgar remix. Neil created works of art, ones that stand on their own merits, and even further, as a whole, give us a taste of the Millennial Zeitgeist.

Anyways what else even came out this year?

... Better give it a listen

"what even came out this year" lol tho. DAMN. for one thing.

Really liking Protomartyr's new record too.

Also
- Life Without Sound (Cloud Nothings)
- DRUNK (Thundercat)
- 50 Song Memoir (Magnetic Fields)
- Everything Now (Arcade Fire)
- Painted Ruins (Grizzly Bear)

I literally did not make it one second before turning it off. I don't know what kind of music would sample that but I don't want to be a part of it.

Chocolate & Vanilla

Fuck Strawberry
Guess I should listen to this most important album of 2017 that I've never heard of

Edit: I gave it 3 minutes and I feel like that's way more than it deserved.

It's a well executed novelty mash-up album but this "the songs are more than just kitsch, or homage, or some vulgar remix. Neil created works of art, ones that stand on their own merits, and even further, as a whole, give us a taste of the Millennial Zeitgeist." is a little much.

Nothing beats the new albums from The Mountain Goats, Gorillaz or Nana Grizol for me. Hard to do so.

It's in the conversation, for sure. I still think it's got weak spots (the two takes on 'One Week' are both fairly uninspired, and hit back-to-back) - but the whole thing is still tremendous. T.I.M.E is a perfect example of how a mash-up can fundamentally shift the way you hear the original song, forever. Bustin' managed to make one of the most ubiquitous tracks in pop culture into something totally fresh.

You really think this beat's Macklemore's critically acclaimed album GEMINI? Seriously, he's one of the few rappers with something to say and his more recent effort is his best yet. Buy on iTunes and learn to love yourself =)

The transition at the start of Wallspin is one of the few times I've genuinely laughed at a song, thanks for making me aware of this OP

Iglooghost just dropped Neo Wax Bloom so no :D I did laugh out loud the other day in the centre of town to that Eye of the Tiger cut up though lol Good lord it's so good.

There is never a correct answer for this. Plenty of albums released this year are important and for many different reasons. They don't always have to be groundbreaking to have an impact... sometimes just being relatable is enough.

Nah. Lots of great albums have come out this year. King Gizzard, Idles, Brockhampton, Milo, etc.

Brockhampton’s both albums Saturation 1 and 2 (3 IS COMING) are probably my favourite albums this year. Benjamin Clementine’s new album as well.

Honestly there’s a lot of albums this year that are so damn good that it’s going to hard for me to make a top 10 this year. 2017 is a good year for music

Man, it seems like I can't really fuck with Gaf's tastes in music. The Jazz-Hop thread since the only place where I like everyone's suggestions.

You can't judge how important an album is the same year it was released, it takes a while to comprehend the impact. If you want the best album released this year though, my boy Varg (not the murderer) has it on lock with that Swedish techno.

Thought it was great. Grower material rather than immediate impact. Only clicked after a handful of listens. More catch in the choruses than the verses.

Critically it was pretty well received?

I like literally all of his records anyway, but AoM is probably my fave

It's definitely my favorite this year, but culturally speaking, I wouldn't even call it important.

Yeah, Bronx-Man was tripping when he said 2017 is lackluster this year. It's going to be hard for me too. I got: Cunninlynguists, Demetria McKinney, and Ruby Ibarra for stuff that was just released in the past 3 days and outside of that:

Substantial
Flamingosis
Denai Moore
Kari Faux
Hempress Sativa
Childhood
2 Christian Scott Albums
Rapsody

for a few

And I'm still waiting on the new Kamaiyah and Esperanza, but I feel like the Esperanza will come out in 2018.

Answer: no

But that said, Annoyed Grunt may be the most important song of all time.

Critically acclaimed does not mean a crap when indie music is fan driven industry. Amongst the fans its considered the weakest of their entire discography, and that includes the middling first 2 records.

Personally, i thought it had great few tracks, like Modern Act, while others were just grating to listen to, like realise my fate and up the surface with no real progression of ... anything really. sterile and devoid of any lasting impact. One of the underrated things about their previous albums is how the base completed their sonic aggression, on this, it was just used like any other indie band , just background melodic piece. and the writing was just meh, few hard hitting topic, but nothing as deep as Stay useless and Fall in.

Also where the fuck are the blasting 7+ mins tracks?

very underwhelming record and easily one of the most disappointing record of 2017

AT least its a great album played live, I'll give it that.
