Is steam becoming the number one platform for all games?

Steam is becoming more popular every year that goes by. Is steam ahead of all consoles now? Except for Nintendos first party offerings i guess.

Concurrent users on PC seems to be the number one indication how well a game has sold.

...thats just because everyone else prefers to hide these numbers. ;)

Steam is just a very good store and people like good things. If they are number one, two or three...i dont care.

PC often doesn't sell as many games as consoles but to be fair they have a lot more games to pick from.

Depends on the game.

- Cyberpunk
- Helldivers 2
- Elden Ring
- Monster Hunter Wilds

All sold best on PC from what we know. All huge games.

This would be unheard of 10 years ago so yes the market has definitely shifted.

But other games do better on ps5:

- Silent Hill 2 remake
- NBA 2k / Madden
- GTA

I'm pretty sure App Store & Play Store is ahead 😭
Do those let the customer refund an app or shared their whole app library with other people?

I don't know about the numbers but, as a customer, I can't think of a better storefront.

The Helldivers 2, Elden Ring, MH wilds numbers come from Alinea, we don't know official splits. People just tend to take them as gospel when reported on by various websites.

It is maybe the number one for variety and choice, though that is subjective, but it is like an order of magnitude behind mobile gaming in terms of revenue.

People use CCU on steam because we don't have much other data to rely on

It's not really a choice

There's no other options

Yes, but that's coming from someone who doesn't care about how much profit rando corps make from games. I assume mobile still reigns in that regard.

No, they don't. Helldivers 2 came from the devs' Twitter stating PC had sold more and we could easily extrapolate using Steam charts numbers vs concurrent players reported by the devs.

Elden Ring's numbers came from a market report.

Monster Hunter Wilds came from Circana or another reputable firm.

"The best platform" without huge titles like Fortnite or Minecraft? No way.

The best platform is the most balanced one, which makes it PlayStation and Xbox.

The short answer is No. It's Mobile, and by such a wide margin that it's unlikely anyone will even come close to matching those numbers in the foreseeable future. And it's only getting bigger.
Consoles and PCs are for old people; new generations have little no interest in them. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Yes. Steam pretty much doubled its concurrent players in the last 5 years. Many games that used to be console exclusives can now be also played on Steam and some of them bacame even more popular on Steam than on consoles. Even mobile developers are releasing they mobile games on Steam. Its just a storefront that has a bit of everething and that makes it appealing for gamers, and developers will end up having to follow where the gamers go. So as Steam popularity keeps increasing so it will the support from developers.

Not all games are bigger on steam compared to consoles, SteamDB concurrent players chart is just a good way to track how a game is trending in engagement in that platform, it gives an idea of a game success or not but it dosent tell the whole story.

So is it the number 1 platform for all games? No. Is it becoming the number 1 platform for all games? Yes

It's hard to imagine the trend reversing since lifestyle trends have pulled people off the couch and out of the living room. Steam offers such a bigger value proposition than anything else that catching up and passing them is probably impossible.

I'm a single player gamer first, couch play second to non but anti cheating is necessary to play online cause I wouldn't mind playing online if it's fair.

It's huge, so is Playstation and so is Nintendo (although a lot of that is 1st party.)

And they are all different. PC offers unique experiences due to nearly everyone having a mouse and keyboard while also still offering the controller experience that used to not be something as accessible on PC. I think it offers the most variety due to that and certainly the most variety of genres doing well.

Steam is the least worst (still shit) of all the digital game ecosystems, including consoles. That's why I am using Steam.

You don't own your Steam games, its digital DRM. On PC their is GOG that lets you own games but Windows itself needs a Microsoft account. So if you want to own your PC games you are looking at GOG games that work on Linux.

I do like GOG but honestly I don't backup the files I "own" lol I use it like any other launcher.

The nice thing about GOG is that they have old versions of games like Bethesda RPGs that are compatible with all the mods out there.

I think the lack of DRM is cool, but it's mostly a novelty for me. Steams servers back up "my files" (I KNOW I DONT OWN THEM FOR SHAME) better than I ever would, and I have yet to lose access to a game that I'm aware of.

Its kinda like the physical games of Sony/Nintendo consoles. No one has the power to remove your ownership of these games. Your ownership is not tied to a digital store.

Dunno about Apple but Google Play does and they've done it before Steam. Their refund is also instantaneous unlike Steam which needs approval before it gets processed.

Also: Google Play Points is much better than useless Steam Points since Play Points actually can be converted into currency for buying stuff.

Yeah I understand the concept of DRM lol I just don't care that much, GOG is just another launcher to me. The experience is 1:1 since I'm not interesting in keeping file backups of my games.

Yeah, GOG is the best store on pc....just for the way they deliver games. But if only a few devs are releasing over there...what can you do!

Depends on the game. Sports games, mascot platformers and certain legacy franchises still perform better on consoles, but newer franchises are definitely doing most of their sales on Steam.

I don't know about it being the best because there's alot of bullshit slop on there too. But it's defintely a platform game developers can no longer ignore.
