Is the Fallout series worth playing?

I snagged both Fallout 1 & 2 brand new last Saturday but I haven't touched them yet. Most of my game-time this week has been going into Ultima VII. So I was wondering if it would be worth switching over for a while and at least trying the first game. People keep calling it a roleplaying game but from the screenshots, it looks nothing like an RPG. :D I also have Fallout Tactics on the way as well.


BTW, regarding Ultima VII. The game is pretty old, but I was wondering if someone might be able to answer a question. In Britain, there is a farm east of Lord British's castle. On the farm there's what I can only describe as a Space Ship. When I click it, the music changes to this catchy little tune. WTF is that all about?! I gots ta know! Someone tell me!!

Shoot a kid in the eye? Child Killer? Bah. I didn't realize it had a non-fantasy setting. Is this like Mad Max turned into an RPG?
 
You BOUGHT the game, and therefore must have SEEN the BOX, you said you LOOKED at SCREENSHOTS, and you STILL didn't know the game did NOT have a fantasy setting!?

You don't deserve to play the game.

No, it's not a fantasy setting. But seriously, shouldn't the guns and post apocalyptic world have been a clue? As Duck of Death said, this game is wasted on you!

Bah! I bought it on ebay and it's the "Dual Box" version. I don't see any screenshots on it. Though the helmet boxart should have gave it away. I thought it might of been at least Final Fantasy 7 level setting(Guns, but Swords and Magic still present. :) )=P
 
Fallout is perhaps the best american made rpg I can think of. That said, by todays standard of ultra high resolution lcd monitors and such it looks like shit which can be a major turn off. The art and designs are still bangin but its all in muddy 640X480. If you can get past that you should have a good time though.
 
FUCK YES. IN SO MANY POSSIBLE WAYS

Tactics is good but flawed. Too difficult but worth a playthrough for fans. Avoid the console edition
 
Baldur's Gate 1&2, Fallout 1&2, Ultima V/VII Pt1&2, Lands of Lore 1&2, Might & Magic Clouds/Dark Side, Eye of the Beholder 1&2, Gold Box Forgotten Realms Quadrology, Bard's Tale 1/2/3 are games you should punish yourself for not playing.

They are all just THAT good.
 
I actually just finished playing Fallout 2 for the first time ever and man it was a great experience. The graphics are crap sure, but it's surprising how quickly you get used to the 4 frames of animation for any action (I suspect it's because the gory deaths seem to get double the frames :lol). The biggest problem the game faces is the archaic interface.

Good good game though. Hell it has one of the best intros for a game I've ever seen. and the SPECIAL system rocks as an RPG levelling system. Picking perks is FUN.

Edit: the locations in this game are REALISITIC mang. New Reno feels like the den of depravity that it is.

I'll let everyone else continue to chastise you for questioning Fallout, but the ship you're talking about is a reference to Wing Commander (the tune that plays is the Kilrathi theme, the Kilrathi being a race of space cats that the humans were fighting in the WC series that Origin, developer of Ultima, was also developing).

If you want that pick up Arcanum. Much much nicer blend of guns and magick.

Man I don't know why but American RPGs walk all over Japanese ones when it comes to backstory and getting into the nitty gritty of the worlds they create.

yup. What he said. WC was pretty good during its time. I loved it and I don't normally like flight sims. Privateer also by Origins also kicked all sorts of crazy ass. Someone needs to copy that concept and make a console very pronto. NAMCO, I'm looking at you.
 
Hell, Wing Commander is good for any time! Wing Commander: Prophecy is still the best goddamn space sim ever, sharing that spot with Freespace 2.

Even Amigas couldn't run Wing Commander 1&2 back in the days - you needed a math co-processor. Wow, that was a BIG deal back then.. And god, Wing Commander: Heart of the Tiger looked so goddamn awesome on a Pentium, I remember drooling at its graphics back when I had a 486.. Price of Freedom introduced hardware acceleration and it had Mark Hamill starring! Prophecy was just PURE SEX..

If anyone speaks ill of Wing Commander here I swear I'll feed them to the nearest Kilrathi..

fallout series kicks ass too.. but the king is wasteland
 
Play to remember when violence was accompanied with humor in video games. Fallout 2 has more funny then 2 Monkey Islands.
 
I am not even a PC fan and I totally dig the Fallout games.

Just wished the setup wasn't so much like an exploit or bug you're playing around with.

I remember that you could buy Speech Packs for those games. My favorite quote was from Stingray "Not bad for an old man!"

A DS port would be perfect with all the ship's commands on the touch screen.
 
LoL. I've spent some time with this game. So far, all I have to say is how come the people who made Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome aren't suing?:lol All that's missing is vehicles(cars with partially missing panels).


BTW, do you eventually get to wield two guns at the same time? And was it possible to save Tandi? I mean, I went in guns blazing but she was pretty much dead in the cell already.

You see! You see! THIS is why I try and avoid the gaming forum.

Anyway, no, you cannot hold two guns at once. But you do get big, big, fun guns. And one small but very much fun gun.

And, yes, you could have saved her. Best way to do it is to use conversational skills rather than just fighting your way through. You can fight your way through most spots(Hell, if you really want, you can go ahead and kill all of the residents of many towns...or, if you're like me, you can do it accidentally and never realize that the town has more than one screen until the second time you play through the game...), but that's pretty early on and it's better to talk your way out of it.
 
Do these games run on WinXP? They came out so long ago..

Yeah, with some minor issues, but nothing serious.

Still though, I was hoping I could use two guns. I wanted to be like Neo! :D
 
I remember playing fallout for a fourth time following this walkthrough that made you this unstoppable soldier of death. Even with the patch there was a trick/glitch that allowed you to gain a boatload of money near the beginning of the game allowing you to buy some crazy weapons in the beginning.


There is a walkthrough floating around the net where some guy beats Fallout 2 in 23 MINUTES!!!!!!!. I've seen it, and it's totally insane.

I didn't like either Fallout but it is worth a run through (and is cheap to get both games, good diversion for the price).
 
Fallout 1 and 2 is my favourite rpg/adventure game series, together with the little big adventure games and shenmue.

You see the link, all those games are cursed, the third part always gets cancelled.
 
I'd love to see a new RPG with an adaptation of Fallout's gameplay (hex-based movement, action points, and a lower percentage of chance to hit based on distance). That's what puts those games above most other RPGs for me. The writing and voice work is stellar as well.
 
Fallout 2 > Fallout 1 > ANYTHING ELSE DAMNIT!

Seriously, me, marcus the mutant...the deathclaw dude and ROBODOG.....wandering around in the wasteland killing shit. it ruled.

If you haven't played Wasteland - you haven't played what is arguably the best RPG in recent memory :) Fallout 1 & 2 are 'successors' to that game. While I really enjoyed Fallout 1, I never could really get into Fallout 2. Fallout Tactics didn't really pique my interest so I didn't bother with it.

The only thing I didn't like about Fallout is that if you use large icons on your system, the large icon for the game shifts to the game creator's ugly mug instead of the standard icon.

Yep, that's all I didn't like about it.
 
Don't diss Tim Cain fool, he'll destroy you.

It also switches to his mug shot when you put the icon in the recycle bin.

And if you type "boom" during the credits he blows up.
 
I guess it depends on how well you can tolerate out dated mechanics. I never played the fallout series when it was new. But when fallout tactics came out I borrowed from a friend on a whim and had a lot of fun with it in real time mode. Played like an infinity engine game except with guns and a post apoc setting which was cool. Could have used a better world map/navigation system though.

Then cuz I liked it enough I went back and played the original fallouts. Well not so much played as *tried* to play. But they just felt soooo slow and clunky that I couldn't tolerate it after having playing the real time mode of tactics.

Perhaps theres a good game under the layers of dirt that have built up over the years but I got tired of digging and gave up.
