Later, it's still pretty early in the day for Shog.

In Southern California this past weekend, I've seen 1 GB models at the Hawthorne and Torrance Best Buy locations, as well as the Redondo Beach CompUSA. They get them in small batches, and they sell out within a few hours. Usually they are not displayed -- you have to ask for them. You might try asking the salespeople about when they are getting a midweek shipment in, call at lunch, and drive over to grab one.

I was in an Apple Store in Virginia last week, and they weren't expecting them in for weeks...but that was due to the waiting list.

I picked mine up rather accidentally actually. Walked into a Microcenter in Sunnyvale and saw them packing some shuffles, I asked what the situation was, said they got them in about an hour ago, sold the 512s in 30 minutes and just had 1GB versions left. I was going to wait to order online and get a student discount, but I figured this was too good an opportunity to pass so I picked it up.

Very happy I made the decision :)

So retailers are getting them, just in very small numbers. Seems like there are 2 shipments per store every week, but it's only gonna be about 5 or 6 so you gotta be fast and know when to go.

My local Best Buy had tons of them in yesterday.

I don't want to turn this into a big debate, but I really want to get an mp3 player for around $100, so should I go for the 512MB ipod shuffle or get something else? The lack of a screen isn't a HUGE deal for me, but it would be nice to have one.

There are several interesting threads about this very topic if you search. Go read through them, and if you still have questions, come back. I'd REALLY like to avoid round #whatever of the endless debate if at all possible. :)

In short, the pluses for the shuffle are its integration with the iTunes and the iTunes Music Store, its form factor, its price, and its "cool factor" with people who like iPods. The minuses are the lack of a screen, fewer features compared to some other flash-based MP3 players, and the fact that it would tie you into using iTunes. As always, you need to make a list of your top three "most important things" and then compare among the options based on that list.

I have to say I love mine. As a matter of fact, I am getting rid of my2g 20 gig one now. The lack of screen is the main sticking point for some, but it does not bother me at all. The form factor is too much for me to overlook- I love it whether jogging or just walking around.

What? With iPod Shuffle do you NEED to use iTunes or it is just recommended since it's all Apple that way?
Other than third-party applications, you have to use iTunes with an iPod. I'm not sure if things like ephPod work with the shuffle or not. However, one of the key features which enhances the usability of the iPod shuffle, AutoFill, is only available in iTunes.

That being said, I don't think that iTunes is bad at all, and I like iTMS a LOT. Some people flip out when they can't use their preferred or current software, though.

This is sort of semi-related.

Not sure if this happened with anyone else, but just to forewarn a few people using iTunes that might have the inclination to uninstall it later. I uninstalled iTunes from my computer a few weeks ago; doing so prevented my computer from accessing my cd-roms, even when I reinstalled the oem drivers. The only way I could remedy the problem was by installing iTunes again.

I think iTunes installed a bunch of spyware/adware on my CPU so I am hesitant to re-install it. So do I need to "buy" all of my music from iTunes for a shuffle or can I rip them from a CD and just load them into the program to load onto the iPod?

Spyware with iTunes? What makes you think that?

iTunes doesn't install spyware/adware; if you have it, it's likely from another source (IE is always a fun target). You don't need to "buy" a single thing from the iTunes Music Store, let alone even use it, as you can rip or import your music and put it right on the player. The iTunes Music Store is different from iTunes, though it's incorporated into the player, much like Windows Media Player 10 and RealPlayer.

Because I installed the iTunes Music Store because I won some free songs from the Pepsi tops and the next time I started up my computer I had a bunch of pop up ads.

Also I use Avant not IE.

Can the iPod shuffle be used as a normal, in order playing music player, where you choose which songs are going on it, or is it strictly a blackbox device working only as they describe it on the apple web site?

http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/

Or just drag and drop individual songs from iTunes onto iPod shuffle.

Based on the Avant FAQ:

Avant FAQ said:
Avant Browser can be best described as a custom web browser application. Avant Browser is a standalone application designed to expand services provided by Microsoft Internet Explorer.

I'm guessing that Avant is simply a web browser that hooks into the Internet Explorer engine, which, surprise, is where all of the security holes come from. So, you may as well be using IE instead of Avant, it's probably not any more secure than launching IE directly. If you want a real alternative to IE, there's Firefox or Opera.

And again, for emphasis, iTunes does not install any spyware, malware, or anything malicious.

Well, there is Quicktime...

And Marco there's an in-order mode where the songs are played in the same order you put them in your iPod playlist when you drag and dropped them into iTunes. So it's entirely feasible, and very easy to listen to specific albums the whole way through. The problem is if you want to listen to a specific album that comes after 3 or 4, then that's a lot of skipping. One workaround would be to use shuffle, skip until you hit the album and then skip to the beginning of the album.

But still, the shuffle isn't about listening to specific music, it's about listening to music. Just set it and forget it. If you have a good library of quality music and aren't too picky about moods and all that junk then it's fine. I just leave my shuffle going on all day, it's great.

How do you get a student discount?

edit: Nevermind, it's only $10 off the 1GB model.

I'm not going to make a trolling comment against iPod shuffles since I've been warned to keep that crap out of this thread, right?

Picked a 1GB one up on Wednesday from Best Buy near Calabasas, CA. They had a ton of them back then. No accessories, though. Loving it so far - impressions coming shortly.

I just got a 1GB Shuffle as a gift, I already have a 3G iPod but I exercise a lot so it's perfect. No detailed impressions yet, but is it just me or does the Shuffle sound better than the normal iPod?
