Why we perform them, how our lives are structured with them, and the the pros and cons of them? Is there a study for this. There is for damn near everything else. Need to look up this information for a report.

Not sure if there is a specific study dedicated to it, but I'm sure a number of fields (e.g. Sociology in particular, Psychology, Anthropology, etc.) touch on it.

Hmm...found this with a quick wiki search.

Ethnomethodology: The branch of sociology that deals with the codes and conventions that underlie everyday social interactions and activities.

Kinda sounds like what you're looking for; though there are a lot of psychobabble/sociobabble (is that a word?) terms.
