ROCKS WITH SKILLZ!!!

Or something.

Man, DHGF... they had some incredible screen-capturing hardware back in the mid-90's. I hated it, because I'd see something like SFZ2 in there, gawk at the pixel-perfectness of their layouts/image quality, buy it, play it in S-Video, and cry at how much worse it looked than their straight RGB caps.

We used some sort of (I believe) RGB capture card that, when I started at GameFan, was becoming or had already become hard to come by. I'm not sure who made them, but the impression that I got was that they were no longer in production, and the office had purchased a number of them before they became impossible to find.

The office then had somebody (I'm not sure who) do a mod to our consoles so that they could output the proper signal to the capture cards. I think we captured via Photoshop, but I can't remember for 100% certain. I remember that when we grabbed, the screenshots came up interlaced, and then when you deinterlaced them, you had this big, beautiful, blocky grabs. *heh*

It was always funny to me that years later, you'd still see screengrabs in other magazines that looked like utter ass. Of course, nowdays, I think pretty much all screenshots out there are PR ones mags get from the companies. That was one of the things that I loved about working at GF - we put a lot of work into what screenshots we grabbed and put into the mag - so it kind of makes me sad how nobody seems to care about the quality of the screenshots anymore. I guess part of it is just most people not seeing the need to spend so long on just grabbing shots; I remember spending an hour or two grabbing shots for King of Fighters and Fatal Fury, trying to get specific shots and getting as much "cool stuff" going on at once as possible, when you could technically grab enough screenshots in ten minutes or so.

I think that's pretty unfair. I know when I started at ziff davis a lot of editors were the same way -- we spent hours taking screens. Problem was as the systems got better, for some reason we just had no luck finding cards that would take decent shots. Starting with the Dreamcast everything just started looking like shit on our cards.

PS2 was even worse.

That's why we eventually switched to getting screens from publishers. Not so much not caring about quality as it was trying to keep the quality of the grabs as high as we could.

Didn't someone say that he was in like the last five when they were considering who to cast as Anakin Skywalker? Or was that Ryan Lockhart?

I never meant to say that there was a direct cause and effect - I'm not saying that the change in how screenshots work was simply because of lazy editors. I'm also not trying to say that only GameFan folks cared about how their screenshots turned out.

That said, I think it can't be denied that it was obvious that some publications didn't care how good (or bad) their screenshots were. As well, I also think that you can't argue that there aren't people and publications out there who don't care if the screenshots are "good" or not, and the PR ones they are supplied from various companies is more than enough. I'm sure there are people out there that see taking the time and effort to grab custom screenshots, not to mention the cost and whatnot in getting proper equipment in the first place, to be a horrible waste of money and resources. At the same time, of course, there are people out there who think the opposite, and would prefer to do custom screenshots instead of just publishing what they are given.

My biggest beef comes, I suppose, from how now there are so many examples of seeing the exact same screenshots in a variety of magazines, even across publishing companies. Not a huge deal to most people probably, but it bugs the crap out of me.

I heard about his mom being a groupie then writing a book about it back in the day but never knew she had a site for it heh.

She is really HOT. Even over 50. And she's been around some huge superstars! Didn't know Nick Rox came from a Hollywood background.

Gamefan's screen shots were leap years above other mags'. For example, Game Players .. I liked the mag, however their screen shots were blurry low-rez pixelated messes. I can remember gawking at the brand new VF2 Saturn screen shots in Gamefan, in utter amazement.

Naw, that was Nick, I only made it to the third round... DAMN YOU HAYDEN.

I heard he also made near-final callbacks for "Kid" in Matrix Reloaded.

...that pic is cool as hell. Though, maybe not quite as cool as I thought it was before. :lol

And even now she doesn't look too bad for her age...she looked good earlier on though.

You just need to set them back to "original" in the options. (Too bad Nick never noticed that, har har har)

I don't see why you're all deeming her a slut. I mean, who DOESN'T have the dream of having relationships with a celebrity, let alone dozens?

Be that as it may, there actually IS a movie based on her; Goldie Hawn plays her character. It is called, apparently without even a touch of irony, The Banger Sisters.
