FUCKING DRAGON BOX!!!!!!!!!

Seven sets. Part 1 eps 1-42. MSRP 79.98. 80 page hardcover book with each one. Starts up in JP language. 4:3.

Whelp, all those people that bought those widescreen cropped orange bricks got fleeced. I have two of the Japanese R2 single releases of the Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box, and the picture is absolutely gorgeous. I just could never bring myself to spend the money to buy the rest of them since there are no subtitles.

Dragonball Kai made me sad.
The transition of production quality, between the intro and the actual episodes is saddening. Dragonball is long dead to me.

* The series wil be released across seven DVD sets
* Part One will retail for $79.98, and contain episodes 1-42 in 4:3 aspect ratio
* Each set will come with an 80-page, hardcover book
* The set defaults to Japanese (English version presumably a secondary feature).

FUNimation rep Adam Sheehan notes that these sets aren't for the "casual fans"

What's the difference in this and all the other sets they've been releasing? Is this set Kai?
No, this is the Japanese remastered version.

It includes the full episodes as they originally broadcast in Japan (full credits plus episode previews included). The footage is also taken from the original 16mm film prints, and has been cleaned frame-by-frame of all damage. However, since it's the original 16mm, it still contains film grain and so forth.

This set is designed for the hardcore purists.

Finally. I was waiting for Kai, but since that turned out to be a great big pile, this will probably turn out to be the DBZ set I get.

What's so bad about Kai?
Not really bad, just kinda seems like a waste of time for me. Would have been a different story if they just re-animated it, but the moments where they try to add in some spots of new animation just seem so jarring to me.

I just figured I might as well just buy the original.

For me, just the new Opening and Closing themes.

The BGM is okay, but it doesn't have that '70's kung-fu movie' vibe anymore, which was a big part of the feel of the original.

These are the Pony Canyon digitally remastered Japanese DVD transfers from the original film negatives. They've been painstakingly cleaned up frame by frame of all dirt & damage, and are simply gorgeous.

Funimation's recent "Orange Brick" release were taken from their crappy 3rd generation masters, cropped into widescreen, and run through an automated DVNR process that blurred the picture which removed the grain, but did not clean any of the dirt & damage and removed a lot of detail from the animation. They also messed with the color timing (screwing a lot of the colors up), and brightened the picture several times over.

I uploaded a few scenes from the R2 Dragon Box singles I own to youtube.

Meh I'd rather have Kai. Not only would I pay less I wouldn't have to sit through painful filler. The show is much better when edited down, it feels like stuff it actually happening.

heh, that's (one of the reasons) why I can't stand the Japanese version. :lol

Don't forget the censoring.

I haven't been really been paying attention to Kai, but I think the censoring was just on some of the earlier episodes. I think that, lately, they've held back on any censoring.

FUNi uploaded their Dragon Box trailer. Good lord Sabat sucks at delivering that over 9000 line. Nobody can replace Brian Drummond's Vegeta.

wtf :lol Drummond's over 9000 line has been the butt of so many jokes because of it's terribly over-the-top delivery. Sabat ftw.

though his voice definitely sounds a lot gruffer compared to when the dub was done several years ago.

That's what makes it great. Sabat's interpretation is a hollow shell of an imitation.

Drummond forever. :D

Yeah, I'm torn about that release. If the Z Dragon Box sells well, they might bring the DB and GT ones to America. I'll probably buy that first set to finally own the first 13 episodes uncut, and then take a wait & see approach.

Did they ever do a similar thing for the original Dragonball in Japan?

Yes, there was a Dragon Box release for Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and the Movies. Funimation as of now is only releasing the DBOX's for Z and the Movies.

So buying this

Affordable Dragon Box, 4:3, original Japanese music.

Will bring back great memories of watching as a kid :D
