The BCS needs to die, and it needs to die now.
First, lets get some stuff out of the way, likely BCS rankings come monday
1. USC
2. OU
3. Auburn
4. Cal
5. Texas
6. Utah
7. Boise State/Louisville
8. Boise State/Louisville
the following teams are ensured BCS spots (Auburn and OU's depend on winning their conference championship games).
1. OU (Big 12 champ)
2. USC (Pac 10 champ)
3. Auburn (SEC Champ)
4. Meeeechigan (Big 10 champ)
5. who the hell knows, probably Va Tech (ACC champ)
6. Boston fucking college (big least 'champ')
Then there are two at large spots... if you are from a non BCS conference and are in the top 6 of the BCS you are ensured a BCS spot, if there are any spots left teams from BCS conferences in the top 4 are ensured spots..
so, if the BCS were today Utah is ensured a spot because they are from a non BCS conference and are in the top 6. Cal gets one because they are top 4 and from a BCS conference... here is where the problems come.
Texas is the number 5 team in the nation, and cannot possibly make one of the top bowl games. Utah is locked in at number 6 and Cal is ahead of them. If Cal loses, they would fall back to 8th or lower. Texas would be the 4th ranked team in the country, but two non BCS schools would be 5th and 6th. So Texas loses.
Cal no loner controls its own desitny. If Texas, a team it never played, loses to ATM next friday a non BCS team would jump texas knocking Cal out of the BCS picture, EVEN IF THEY WIN. So, the consensus 4 team in the nation would stay home because Texas lost its rivalry game.
Now here is where things truly get screwed up. Lets say Auburn loses their conference championship and USC drops a game to Notre dame. USC is still their conference champ, but Cal or Texas (who knows how a USC loss would hurt Cal in the computer polls) would be the number 2 team in the country. The other would be number 3 in the country. That team WOULDNT make it to the BCS. That potentially means that Texas could play OU for the national title while Cal is sent to a second tier bowl game even though the human polls favor Cal over Texas... so while most people think Cal should play for the title, they wouldnt even make it to the BCS at all.
The BCS's forumla change is now favoring teams that play creampuff schedules in shitty conferences... and the automatic bids are putting teams that dont deserve to be in a good bowl (ACC, Big East certainly dont, and Michigan with its loss today probably doesnt deserve to be in a top bowl either)... if this is meant to get the best teams playing each other in the best bowls, why dont you just take the BCS top 8, have 1 vs. 2, 3 vs. 4, 5 vs. 6 and 7 vs 8.. who cares what conference you are from, if your conference cant manage to get a team in the top 8 in the nation, tough shit. Your conference doesnt deserve the prestige or the money.
As a Texas fan Im rooting for Cal to make it to the BCS. I respect a team that played a real schedule over what the non BCS teams play..
