I've been offered a gig as manager of one of their game stores. We've not yet talked money. Does anyone know how much that position goes for? Just curious....

Haha about right. I dunno. One of my managers at staples used to work at blockbuster, WONDER WHY HE LEFT. Lolz. Management at blockbuster isnt really management anyway. So they probably jip ya money wise.

My last job got rid of my dept., so I've been unemployed for about a month. I've got a mortgage and a wife, plus I'm going to law school, so I hope your estimate of 35K is more on the mark than other figures I've heard.

$35K sounds a bit high to me. If they've offered the job just call and ask.

One big upside is that you can be like Bill Murray in The Man Who Knew Too Little and tell everyone you're in the movie industry.

Well it depends on this.

If blockbuster considers GameRush to be its own store. If they consider it a department of the store you might get less, this is a big might.

Staples pays better than blockbuster, but lets just say department heads (me) make around 27,000 a year not including possible monthly bonuses. So a manager would make a lot more. Of course this is for a full blown store so I dunno.

35k sounds very reasonable tho. Because when you break it down hourly its about 17 an hour maybe which isnt THAT big a wage really. And if youre going to be full time devoted to the job they need to make it a job that you consider a living wage. Make sure they recognize that in order for you to commit to them, you need them to commit to you.

They consider the position as seperate from the store, as I have the right to hire/fire. Hopefully that's a good thing. I haven't talked to anyone yet as the man I interviewed with is out of town for the next few days. He left a message saying I got the gig, and we'd discuss details when he returned.

Yeah just make sure he understands your position on wage. Dont shoot for the moon but make it clear you NEED to be able to live off this. Mention that after laying out your qualifications and your desire to see the store succeed.

Retail wage bargaining is tricky business. Usually a hiring manager is bound to a framework o wages which is what makes it hard to get more, but sometimes you can if they feel its worth the effort.

I LOVED working at Blockbuster. I wish I could get hired back on at the store up here at school. And the job is SO EASY now that we dont have late fees. Basically go in there, run register or delgate that to your subordinates while you play out on the sales floor rearranging crap.

That actually sounds quite...boring. I'm all for a job being easy now and then, but if I don't feel like I'm actually fulfilling an important purpose and learning/enhancing my skills, then I can't really see myself enjoying it. I'm sure it pays the bills and would make a good short-term job, but in the long run would likely drive me nuts.

Oh, but you can pop in a movie and kick it with your coworkers. Its not a bad thing. I certainly wouldn't want to do it long term either but when you're in school its a great job.
