With all due respect to the team for their wonderful story telling ability and their wonderful cinematography, the gameplay in Metal Gear Solid is atrocious. Simplistic AI, poor combat, and very limited controls and freedome make this series among the worst I've touched.

I only played MGS about 15 minutes on a friends PSX. I don't feel like i missed out.

why not try out metal gear on Gameboy? That way you won't feel so dirty, and its a pretty good intro to the metal gear stealth stuff too

Play Solid Snake. My personal favorite of the series There are translations of it to be found on the net fairly easily.

To me, this is clearly one of the best series in video games. Hideo being a genius, it isn't surprising.
