J Allad, sell BC on the side..include HD in core.

Why doesnt MS make bc a dvd addon?

core system with hd and controller for 299.99
special edition system: hd wireless controller, remote, etc 399.99

Xbox Classic Dvd (enabes backward compatability) 39.99 or 49.99

This would mean MS would only have to pay nvidea for each classic dvd sold. Heck, MS could even offer it for d/l in marketplace.

Why didnt MS think of this? Its so frickin easy.

How many people would buy the DVD? It would confuse them even more IMO. And a lot of games needs an HDD, be it for caching, saving and downloading maps etc.

MS has to pay nvidea for every xbox with a hard drive because all hard drives have the compatablity software that enables bc...so, if they put the software on a dvd and sold it to the people that care about bc, it would be far fewer x360's than including it on each hd unit....and so, they could include a hd in all units.

I for one wont care about bc...so why make me pay for it?

any way...I am getting the 399.99 modl any way. But I think MS would have been smarter doing it via a seperate dvd instead of a hd less system.

I would think that MS would have to pay nvidia for every HD period since the HD(apparently) contains the BC coding.....

They should make BC optional, and a download on Xbox Live. $10 download, attaches to the gamertag, and you can download to the hard disk. Very simple and they don't have to pay to NVidia as we would be the ones doing it.

Uh they'd have to pay nvidia regardless of how they deliver the BC to X360 owners.

Even if Microsoft is paying per-drive instead of per-console (or simply a one-time fee), which may or may not be true, it isn't going to be more than a dollar or three. I mean, they are only paying something like $5 a chip in royalties to ATi for xenos.

Not really. This is akin to the DVD remote on the Xbox. They don't have to pay to the consortium unless it's unlocked in the hardware, which is done with the dongle that's sold with the DVD remote. The DVD remote pays for that fee, just as an online enabler and downloadable profiles would. I spoke figuratively when I said we would be the ones paying, since we'd pay for such a download on Xbox Live and it'd go directly to NVidia.

Did you read the post? The idea is to take the code off the hd and put it on a dvd you could buy.

And for the guy who suggests that it could be 1-3 dollars per unit...well, after 10 million consoles are sold, that would be 10-30 million dollars they would have to pay....thats a lot more than say 1-3 million dollars if only 10% of those owners purchased a bc dvd.

I like the way you think. You are reading my mind. LOL

Yes, but my point is that it isn't a significant factor in the cost of the harddrive and it isn't the reason the harddrive isn't being included in the $299 unit. So even if they did choose to sell the option as a DVD instead of including it with the harddrive, the HDD would probably still retail for $99, and the $299 SKU still wouldn't have the drive. All it would do is add another ridiculously overpriced "accessory".

how much do yu guys reallty think MS pays Nvidia in licensing fees?

i mean, really?

ten cents per 180?

fifty cents?

a dollar?

two?

five?

twenty?

BC technology licensing can't really be the issue in the HD...

especially after seeing the crazy accessory prices, i'd bet that it's more like fifty cents to a dollar and MS just wants to make money on everything

The HDD is expensive to manufacture though... Excluding BC would not make it significantly cheaper I dont think. Thus Core package would still be without the HDD.

Sorry no I didn't... the GAF rulebook says I must look at posts, glance at them really, then make up my own mind on what I THINK the post said... then respond as if what I thought was actually truth. ;)

I question how expensive a 2.5 20GB Sata drive is relative to the cost MS is putting it at.

You are probably right...but i could have sworn the bc compatability license cost them bucks.

Be cool if MS had a drive tray sku that wass the drive bay and install dvd for 49.99....then we could put huge drives on the 360 instead of the piss puny 20 gig drive. Thy should have made it 40g at the least.

LOL...you get points for that response. +1

I love how everyone seems to know the dollar amounts of confidential licensing agreements that are not published in annual reports, or circulated in the media.

Add this to everyone seeming to know the build out prices, etc.

ProTip: Quit acting like you know what you are talking about.

I'd imagine Microsoft is paying whatever Nvidia requested. Its not like they were in a great bargaining position.

I wouldn't be surprised if the whole Xbox 360 pricing is just meant to help MS in the bottom line. They bled billions of dollars with Xbox and I bet Xbox 360 is meant to show their shareholders and the executives that they can do it again but this time make a profit so they're willing to take hits in marketshare and credibility if it will mean they'll make a profit.

the games will speak as to wether the system is worth it to gamers or not and no i dont mean us here. i mean the real public. the public that bought the matrix and true crimes and other crappy games. Its not like any of the 360 games are anywhere near those turds but i say this matter is out of the internets hands.

NVIDIA!! NVIDIA!! NVIDIA!!!

The arrangment of the deal isn't disclosed and we really dont know if they even have to pay a per unit or a flat fee.

Also HDD is required for B/C.

have you checked out Frame City Killer lately?

I'm mad for the misleading title, I thought this was an announcement about including the HDD in the Core packet >:(
