J.R.R. Tolkien's The Return of the King released 70 years ago today

What they are doing with LoR franchise nowadays should be considered a criminal offense. The level of disrespect they have is disgusting.
I have my hopes put on the videogame Embracer is developing. Being funded by Abu Dhabi I would guess (hope) it'll have 0 woke stuff.

Its crazy to me to think that (hopefully) one day I'll be telling kids "Harry Potter released 70 years today". Yeah I put LOTR above it in terms of everything, but its still my generations defining fantasy series like LOTR was back then. Time is so crazy.

I'm more pissed at those money-grubbing pricks at the Tolkien Estate for letting this clusterfuck go down by allowing these bastards shit all over J.R.R. and Christopher's legacies.

That and the ghost army.

I'm hoping this will be fan-fixed with AI one day.

edit: toned down the profanities.

This passage was always a personal favourite of mine:

Tolkien had quite a unique way of communicating "oh fuck" to the reader.

It's amazing to realize that LotR was largely obscure for the first several decades it existed. It was published to little notice and it wasn't until years after Tolkien's passing that it gained attention after the growing popularity of fantasy settings driven by the early days of things like Dungeons and Dragons. Of course today it is acknowledged as one of the greatest works of English literature in the 20th century but it was not always so

That isn't really true, since the books began to have their first major cultural impact in the 60s - when the professor was very much still alive.

Normally I would say book 10x> than movie. But Peter Jackson's first three are pretty damn good. read the book though.
I agree, it is worth doing both. I do strongly advise to get the Extended Edition cut of the LotR movies as it elevates them even more.

For the best quality there is the UHD Blu-Ray box-set that contains both cuts of each movie:

BUT

For lore and history purposes I would ALSO get either the DVD or the Blu-Ray extended edition box-set that contains many hours of extra content, documentaries and interviews, etc…:

The regular Blu-Ray cut of the movies has some a bit weird colouring issues the DVD and 4K UHD Blu-Ray editions do not have (FotR only, other movies seem fine).

Considering the extra content is all DVD quality I would say get the DVD box-set and the 4K UHD Blu-Ray edition especially if you find a new DVD box-set or a very well kept one.

Yeah, the 4K set omitting the Appendices is why I kept my bluray set even after buying it.

Also reminds me, I have the bluray set, but I need to get the 4K set of The Hobbit one of these days.

Same thing for me, I could not really get rid of the DVD one because of the cool book and maps that came with it (… also could not get rid of the Blu-Ray special extended edition either haha).

Still, the jump in quality with the UHD edition (they went and very carefully touched up the colour grading of the movie) makes it worth it.

Abso-fucking-lutely.

And I say that as someone who saw the movies before reading the books.

Also, for anyone else here, The Silmarillion is a damn good read. Fingolfin vs Morgoth...

I had no idea there was a Silmarillion heavy metal album - holy shit, these tracks smash hard. Thanks for linking this :messenger_horns:
