Rhidle has to calcluate his numbers given percentages off of the CSFB report (Xbox up 23% kind of a thing), so he just puts them in rounded hardware numbers, as they are already an imprecise percentage of a number. If you look back in past threads or even my prediction threads (which list HW sales by month by system), you'll see that many of the HW numbers were rounded (and somewhat incorrect). BTW, the December numbers were off by a good bit more than the January ones, even more than a 1% amount, but I'll be posting a table soon.

These are the REAL RAW NPD numbers, just like software.

Ah thanks for the explanation.. I guess I've never really paid much attention to them... in this respect before.

PS2: 488,000
Xbox: 241,000
Gamecube: 114,000

And how many of those PS2 sales are because the original just broke (which seems to happen a whole helluva lot from what the EB guys are always telling me).

Why the surprise at PS2 nos? Soon as they showed the new version every Psyborg on here got one or was getting one. I guess thousands of other sheep also thought the same.

This reasoning should be a bannable offense at this point, just like all of those bannable phrases.

You poor bitter kid.

even though reputable sources like GamePro and EGM allude to the same thing?

just because something is a negative comment towards Sony hardware issues doesn't make it untrue...

Repeat buying is something that happens on all platforms, especially when they get redsigns like PSone or GBA SP. PlayStations seem to have a higher defect rate than most consoles, but they also move significatly more working machines too.

I don't think any reputable source tries to portray Sony's great sales as being somewhat attributable to faulty hardware (and that includes Itagaki :lol). I think everyone believes that there have been faulty systems, but trying to use it as an excuse in a sales thread presupposes that the percentage is materially significant to the argument. If it were 2% that would be ~10k units this month.

Would the sales be less impressive if we only say 480k sold vs 490k? Then you start getting into trolltastic percentages to make any number significant which is exactly the idiocy of the argument.

ok that's true that it wouldn't affect sales to the point where it's even a race, Sony is still too far ahead, I was referring to the reference to faulty hardware...

I do think PS2'ers are rebuying the machine, though I think it may just be because they want a smaller system not cause it may havne broken, but at the same time if something was wrong with their machine before, then the fact that's it's a new model may have pushed them to get a new one...

Thank goodness we're having a real hardware discussion now...so much less degenerative than it was before ;)

The exact same argument was made with the PSOne and it was proven to be completely false that time as well. Some things never change.

what do gamepro and egm know that we dont?

well, Gamepro has (or used to) have a letters section that served as a Q&A about game and hardware issues...

btw, SCB, how would one be able to "prove" anything one way or another?

other than anedectal evidence, did a company conduct polls?

How many times does Sonycowboy have to mention that:

For every person that tries to act as though the over-riding reason for high PS2 sales is broken hardware, you are just increasing the tie-ratio of the PS2 from great to INCREDIBLE, thus making the PS2 look even more amazing.

So are you guys PS2 fans, PS2 haters or really bad at math? :)

Google hits for "Broken PS2" - 1,080,000
Google hits for "Broken XBox" - 1,010,000

What does this prove? Nothing! Just like the rest of the discussion.

Both MS and Sony suck at making durable consoles?

edit: for Broken GameCube I got 582,000

I got,
"Broken PS2" - 1,060,000
"Broken XBox" - 1,040,000

Oh no, momentum. :D

i know it contrast to the others gamcubes sales don't look the best, but if it's still selling at 100K units a month, then it shows there is at least little market for it left. I mean if it can sell another 1-2 million units this year then at least it's still adding to Nintendo's total, it's not like it's totally being shunned and not selling a unit at all. it's at 1/4 of the ps2 this month, or a bit less, but isn't the ps2 the most successful games machine?

Eventually when the console wars come down to Sony and MS will people still give a shit about hardware numbers?
They'll care even more. Nothing like a good 2 way rivalry to spawn fanboys.... remember the SNES/Genesis days?

Yeah, except that back then, it was a schoolyard battle of who was cooler, Sonic or Mario.

HW numbers

1. PS2 275k
2. GBA 225k
3. Xbox 210k
4. NDS 165k
5. NGC 115k

These are the numbers I get from a Chinese site. Can someone please double check the PS2 numbers?

Weird... I can't find an independent source of NPD hardware numbers anywhere on the web.

As far as the NPD Funworld site itself, you have to be a subscriber to get monthly numbers, I assume?

Actually, if you search by phrases and not just pages with both words on them...

"Broken PS2" - 7,150
"Broken Xbox" - 850
"Broken GameCube" - 649

"Broken GBA" - 670
"Broken SP" - 333
"Broken DS" - 259

and, to make it more interesting...

"Broken NES" - 588
"Broken SNES" - 193
"Broken N64" - 180

"Broken Dreamcast" - 431

(Searching for Genesis and Saturn just pulls up too many references to Genesis space capsules and Saturn cars).

`Wow at the PS2 numbers. I have bought 3 PS2's in 5 years, and i guess i am not the only one.

Have sony discontinued the large original PS2 ?

Is the accusation that "SONYCOWBOY LIED TOTAL OAERS AM ROSEBUDED" a vicious lie or the shocking truth? We need to know, come on SC, deliver the numbers!

If you trust opa or any of their retarded regulars, you don't need to bother asking.

1) Rhindle posted the numbers first and I pretty much validated them with the non-percentage based ones. They are 100% rock solid.

2) We got out early Friday for the long weekend, so I wasn't able to get the GBA & DS numbers like I thought. We'll have to wait until Tuesday :(

Seriously though, thanks for the numbers we did get, at least.

I'm well aware. However, a whole host of others there are GAF refuse. I suppose I could have clarified, that I was only talking about the retards.

LOL @ all those "PS2 sell more because they break easily" talks...

If that's true, how to explain PS2 got the highest tie ratio among all consoles?

Is it because all broken PS2 owner re-buy their whole library when they re-buy their PS2?

or PS2 automatically burn all your games when they break???
