POKEMON IS A FAD

:lol :lol :lol

someone on GAF is looking pretty stupid right now. The timing is providence! :lol

It's hard to call something that's done well for a decade a fad.

Now in the US, back when every kid was collecting the merchandise for the game and going to see the movies in the theaters and such, those faddish times are over. So I would say the merchandising fad came and went.

I think in many ways, it wouldn't be stretching things to call Pokemon the Mario of the recent generation. I know guys old enough to drink now that look back upon the release of Pokemon as one of their defining moments of gaming. It's weird to think that it could mean that much to them, but it does.

Pokemon Center Yokohama was opened at the weekend, the fifth in Japan.

Awww, bless 'em. :)

No - you said that Pokemon is a fad.
then you said all games are a fad.

That's not stupid....

Its not stupid at all. What do you call a product that has run its course? A fad. Sometime in the future, Pokemon will strugle, so we know its a fad. Just like cars. Someday we will all be using helicoptors or hovercraft or something like that, so cars are fads.

I said all games are a fad, not videogames. In other words, there will be varying periods where different games are popular. For Pokemon, it might be another five or ten years. I used a bad word, "prolonged popularity" is superior. But all I meant by it was that eventually a product will come that consumers (young ones) will consider superior, and they'll go there. That's all that was meant. It happens, it's a natural progression. It's not an insult to the popularity of any given product.

It was simply poor word usage. But I did specifically say Pokemon will continue to sell millions for years, so it's irrelevant to this particular topic. I said I just hope the PSP helps get rid of Pokemon, however long that takes.

Yes, because having yearly versions of Jak & Daxter or the like is so much better than Pokemon.

I hope that Pokemon Diamond and Pearl helps get rid of the PSP. :)

I'll ask you once again, Amir0x (or perhaps he has me ignored) - weren't you the one who was frothing over the idea of a Pokemon mmorpg?

Uh, you're making a connection I did not make. I said I hope the PSP helps get rid of Pokemon, that's all. I didn't say I hope it gets rid of DS, that's stupid. I love my DS. I just hate Pokemon, because it's a shitty, shitty franchise that hasn't improved since the first outing. And I have no idea where the Jak & Daxter comment came from as it's an entirely different franchise with entirely different quality. And aside from the first, it's not exactly aimed at the "kiddie" demographic anymore. Furthermore, according to Naughty Dog they're hangin' up Jak and Daxter so whatever they bring is going to be different. And even further, Naughty Dog said they weren't doing anything for PSP.

So I don't know if you unintentionally meant to reveal your intentions with that post, or if you just have trouble seperating subjects.

NLB2: You must have not read the other thread, where I answered your question. Yes, I was the one "frothing" over the idea of a Pokemon MMORPG. I believe it is the only way the series could go to gain my attention. The Pokemon world is perfect for such a genre, complete with classes and Pokemon types and all sorts of goodies like that. It's also worth noting that just because previous Pokemon games haven't been good to me it doesn't mean I don't have a general interest in the concept behind them, because I believe it can easily be made into an awesome game series when done right. I just don't think Pokemon has done it right, in terms of quality. It certainly did something right in terms of marketing.

Why thank you :)

Also, I don't know which of us is going out of style faster... but from the looks of things, you already have a massive headstart! I'll play catch up if I can!

And to think, just a few short days ago Amir0x posted this about me.

I am teh heartbroken.

Why are you heartbroken? You act like my opinion changed, Earthbound-lover! Also, can you NOT SEE THIS THREAD? I replied to your question. That's TWICE already, as you ignored my response in the other thread :P

Oh yay! Maybe I should read your entire posts in the future.

Did I miss it where it was declared "Fuck with Amir0x" day?

Weird.

Heh, we had a big debate about Pokemon a few days ago. Odnetnin is GreenGiant and selectively reads what he likes, which is no surprise if you can count how many times he has been banned by now, and the others just misunderstood.

Comes with the territory, though. When you debate your viewpoints vigorously, it's what happens. You make an enemy out of some, friends out of others. :lol

I just have difficulty understanding how the PSP would get rid of Pokemon in any way, shape, or form.

I could argue the same about Jak and Daxter about not improving since the first outing. I would be surprised if there wasn't a Jak and Daxter kart racer or party game on the PS3, actually.

:P

:P

Hey, we're arguing silly things now. I mean if Naughty Dog is to believe, Jak III was the end of that. But maybe we'll get a Kart game, who knows?

Anyway, my argument in the other thread was that the popular games get dictated by the company/companies who have control of the market. If PSP managed to gain control of the handheld market, at least for a while, it might also manage to make Pokemon undesirable compared to whatever they offer. That's all. I doubt it'll happen anytime soon, or if it'll even happen in the next ten years... but that was my argument. I really dislike Pokemon, so I make hyperbolic statements about my desires ;)

I don't want that to happen at all, and I doubt anything the PSP does will cripple Pokemon sales any. I still think the franchise will fall to its own natural decline, and not some new hit thing taking attention away from it, that would have happened by now really. I love the games though, and I even enjoy the anime (*gasp*), but you're just being a little selfish here. I understand why you hate it so much, that's great, but I think it's about time you let it go.

I don't like how Zelda has been done on the consoles these past two generations, then again I can't say I'm big on Zelda either, but I wouldn't want to see the games totally squashed into nothing because I don't like them, that's just silly. Perhaps I'm just too decent.

I just suspect that for every new Pokemon thread brought to the forum, it'll be quickly derailed by the exact same posts, by the exact same people, much like Nintendogs, but at least MAF and Drinky really have move on to posting about other things. I just wonder when we'll have an actual discussion about the game, rather than a bunch of people trying to justify liking or disliking it. It's a cool topic once or twice, but every time? No.

But yeah, this will fall on deaf ears, for when Pokemon DS is revealed and shown to just be a slight update from the GBA games, well, I can already hear the chaos already. I suspect that will be the case anyway.

I guess it just helps to come out of it not feeling any different. I'll still be enjoying the games, and that section of people who don't, still won't. As long as Nintendo doesn't try and alienate the current Pokemon fanbase to try and include those "naysayers", it'll do fine, and people will stay happy, they haven't grown tired of the series yet, and there must be a reason for that. I'm not saying it will never lose its popularity, it certainly will, but I think the games will stick around for a long time, perhaps decades.

That's all I'm saying about this, as I'm very very tired of these silly little nitpicky discussions that have appeared any many threads as of late. I only hope that bans fall soon enough or some order is taken to it, as it does feel like it's getting out of hand. It no longers seem like a simple gaming discussion, but mere jabbering and tail chasing.
