We are strongly pushing for the iPod tax. Taizo Shinya, spokesman for the Recording Industry Association of Japan, which supports a copyright law revision to charge royalties on digital music players.

wonder if the same would happen in America, In Europe its a sure bet

is it because the iPod isn't Japanese? Is that it? I mean, it's not apple's fault Sony's been sucking lately.

... lol, $30+ an album isn't enough for the Record industry ??

We had this in Canada for awhile, then it got overruled and now Apple can refund your 'tax' if you bought an iPod within the time period they had it in effect... look it up.

How would they enforce this? They'd have to put the same tax on software, PSPs, Xboxes, stereo systems, mobile phones, every damned thing under the sun.

It won't happen.

Since it's impossible to really know what tunes were copied in homes, the groups hand out an estimated payment according to a sample survey on how music sold that year, says Toru Takeda, a copyright official at the Cultural Agency, which set up the committee.

Since last year, recording companies and other lobbies here have been grumbling that the same system should be applied to recording devices with hard-drives, including MP3 players like Apple Computer Inc.'s iPods as well as possibly flash-memory players.

In January, a committee was set up to debate the issue, Takeda said.

But the panel, made up of academics, consumer-rights activists and other experts, is so divided on where to draw the line on what constitutes copyright infringement, it is highly unlikely to come up with an agreement by the December deadline.

its a tax only on ipods. It is used to buy cream cakes and donuts for Sony to help them feel better about being raped by Apple.

in sweden, all media that you can have pirated music on will have a tax, that will give money to musicians etc who are destroyed by illegal copying balbalblablablba.

It was supposed to be on 1st July, but they didnt know how to work it out yet, so i dont think its been done yet.

I also think mp3-players are affected by this crap.
