Japan's game industry grows 6% in 2005

DS is definitely the light for the industry in Japan.

Next-gen (X360) didn't do much did it in 2005 :lol

Man I underestimated how big it was going to be among the kids...
even older demographics are picking it up over the PSP. Crazy.

However, I've seen more people playing their PSPs in the train,
as opposed to months ago where it was like just me or something.

Over the new year I was challenged to some Yawaraka Atamajuku by some of my wife's younger relatives. Against the eldest, I was whipping him in the first run, but in the second he picked the quickfire kana tests for a cheap victory. I totally owned his younger brother though :lol

I totally understand this, though. PSP feels a lot cooler to be seen with, for some reason. Maybe Kutaragi was right about taking portable gaming out of the gutter, but a lot of the people I see are just watching movies or (more commonly) surfing the web!

I wonder if he gave Konno a raise. I think it's long due after he gave us Nintendogs and Mario Kart.

I think the unusually low software sales, and the underwhelming PS2 performance are both attributed to the lack of huge PS2 titles last year (no DQ or FF). Hopefully 2006 will see this set right.

Nintendo was right all along although some people would do anything to dispute it just because Nintendo was right.

Good to see Japan slowly crawling out of its depression.

Never doubt this man's genius. I now understand why Nintendo hired him instead of me.

Cause he's more Japanese than me.

I think my inner gamer is broken, I just cant get into my DS like others are.. (I have mario kart, castlevania, mario 64, and HAD nintendogs)

WHATS WRONG WITH ME GAF I want fun too.

I think its maybe the "portable" aspect of it, I just like gaming on a big tv (no im not blind) but I didnt even give gba stuff a second glance untill the gba player came around. now im enjoying advance wars, and rebel star (even tho its NOT LIKE FOOKIN XCOM ENOUGH DAMNIT !!1)

edit: and good for japan, their game industry has been pretty bad the past few years hasnt it?

It's interesting because 2004's biggest platforms (GBA/SP and PS2) were way down, and so was the GC. DS and PSP really carried the Japanese market in 2005.

Yeah here is hoping that they it does continue to grow/recover. If it does again next year, I wouldn't be surprised if it is all due to Nintendo and the Revolution.

Harhar! Way to rub it his face.

Stop playing w/ yourself.

This is pretty much expected. Two new pieces of hardware with psp and DS in their first full years with DS setting some records. But they are handhelds which usually have lower tie-ratios than consoles. That is where the ps2 stalling has caused a drop in software sales. Partly down to lack of a major hit(although Kingdom hearts sneaked in right at the end), but to be honest there were some very weak sales on things like gundam ps2 earlier in the year. I dont know what to make of next year though, ps3 launches but Square Enix are on a bit of a rampage for ps2. The transition is bad enough already so could ps2 really go against the grain and not slow down even more next year? It looks like it should be a real bumper year tough with DS continuing strong with Pokemon, ps2 having FF12 and more, and launches of ps3 and Revolution.

Without PSP would the 6% have been possible? :P

To be fair Nintendo DS has been a pretty big success. Its not a bad system.

It's temporary. Once enough people have DSes, PS3's, and Revolutions, they'll go back to buying used games.

By Media Create : (all consoles)
2002 : 9 180 600
2003 : 7 751 000 - 16 %
2004 : 8 489 684 + 10 %
2005 : 9 813 334 + 16 %

In 2006 I think break 10 000 000 with Pokemon for DS, Revolution & PS3.
