Kanye is indeed the voice of a generation and is borderline conjuring Lennon here with some of his comments. This is why I find him so fascinating. Taking hip-hop out the hood and proving once and for all it's not just a fad.

Bossip: We recently saw your quote “I don’t believe in religion, and I don’t believe in giving it all up to Jesus.” Does this mean that you’re no longer a Christian?
Yeezy: I believe in God. Christianity wasn’t an option when I was growing up, it was the only thing. It wasn’t like I was given the decision at the time. You know how you decide that you want to be a Doctor or a Lawyer or a painter or a basketball player or whatever? You’re not given a decision of what religion you want. Your parents just give it to you. Like, you’re a Jew or you’re a Muslim or you’re a Christian. I feel like religion is more about separation and judgment than bringing people together and understanding. That’s all I’m about. I’m about accepting people for who they are. Live and let live. I fully embrace every culture there is. I love when people are who they are to the fullest.

Bossip: So do you believe in Jesus at all?
Yeezy: I believe in Jesus as an icon, but I don’t feel the responsibility to put my life on Jesus. I feel I need to take responsibility for my own successes and failures. Why I say, ‘I don’t give it all up to Jesus’ is because there are a lot of people who don’t take responsibility for their lives, and always think Jesus is gonna handle it. And, that’s what I refuse to do. Christianity is embedded in who I am, so I will still say things like this is a blessing, amen, and still say prayers; things that your Grandmother embedded in you. I’m always gonna have a little Chicago in me, a little hood in me, and a little Christianity in me. Just because it’s what I know. But, I do not believe that other religions are going to hell, I do not believe in a lot of elements of it. I want to express to people that I do believe in God, but I also have friends whom are atheists.

fuck the haters, Kanye West is great. i agree completely with what he says, especially the part about people putting it all on Jesus.

/in before the hate

fake edit: dammit im too late.

People who think Kanye says creative and insightful things haven't listened to him speak enough.

He's our generations Bill Cosby if anything.

I recently started listening to his stuff, after I read some article on his new album. He seems like a cool guy and his first album is really good (and I'm not even that into hip hop)

what bullshit. name another mainstream artist that would EVER say something like what kanye said above. all we see in hiphop today is fucking people like 50 cent wearing crosses in videos while shooting up some gangstas and various other hypocrisies. at least kanye is different.

"i got the jesus on the chain and that dont mean shit"

Seems like you just kind of made a big ass point of some sort here.

But seriously though, DMX says some real ass shit too when he's not snorting lines of cocaine off of some hooker in front of his kids... while recording another track that begins with "Let us pray".

:lol

Remember how early DMX fans were to the first to openly laugh about his "spiritual side"? They listen to enough of his music, statements, and interviews to know that he's a complete bigot when it comes down to it.

Kanye makes some nice music (I liked his early stuff more but thats really beside the point) but to associate his musical talent with his social skills and overall integrity is just ignorant. He says some stuff in interviews that sounds nice, but when you see his reasoning behind MOST of those statements it just makes you want to shake your head.

That man is an egomaniacal moron. If I thought there was any chance that it was him that came up with what was said in that interview I would take some of it back. He had help.

well i honestly dont remember much of DMX :lol

but i dont think thats similar to kanye at all. he speaks his opinions in his music and on his blog that i used to check. the questions in the OP arent a lie, and like i already said, i actually have the same views. word for word, i would agree with all of what he says there.

i do agree though that occasionally he can say some weird ass shit. i blame the media more for it though. its like they try to back him into a corner and just smother him with questions until he says something "kanye-ish"

seriously though, that is him. i have followed him enough to know what his views are. even if the exact wording wasnt all him, those ideas are.

Back him into a corner because of some of the ridiculous shit that he says and how he contradicts himself with his actions?

He's the Sarah Palin of the rap.

Kanye sounds like a great guy to have as a friend, and I love his albums. But voice of a generation? Definitely not.

We are truly blessed to be living in the time of Kanye West, Barry Obama and Christian Bale. The real GAF Holy Trinity.

how does he contradict himself with his actions? and yea, backs him into a corner. they know hes not the most eloquent guy. they know he will just say whatever comes to his mind without thinking. so they do what it takes to make him answer the tough questions.

also, lol barry obama :lol

He's pissed off, confused, flaky, egomaniacal, paranoid, and truly insecure. I have no problem calling him the voice of the generation. His "George Bush does not care about black people" freakout was definitely one of the most tacit representations of youth culture and comprehension ever.

When he fades away like many other talentless hacks before him, it will be a glorious day for the music ind.... wait, for the entire human race.

In order to be the voice of a generation, you have to inspire and unite people under with your words and songs. Elvis Presley, Elton John and Michael Jackson, Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrisson were "voice of a generation". Kanye West is just a piece of shit.
Shitty music, shitty personality and a smug face are the only three things you need to be called a "musician" and an "artist" nowadays.

So fuck him.

The dude is a primadonna. He got made at a 16yo I homeschool b/c she wasn't dickriding at a party. Yes...Kanye West is so insecure he gets mad if high school girls don't jock him. Fuck him. Besides, I've been saying shit like that for like 14 years. It's no less poignant just b/c I haven't gone multiplat. PEACE.

This is probly the most retarded statement I've read on GAF.

It never fails. Mention Kanye in a positive light, and watch the stupidity flow from the haters. It's like death and taxes. Except funnier.

Pretty sure madonna did it a couple dozen times. Only way sexier...she totally banged black jesus.

Man dude...is this shit really that mind blowing for you? good to see it but damn dude.

Marilyn Manson was saying this in the 90s.

:lol

Oh I remember those days. My friend asked us if we thought she was going to hell for having her Marilyn Manson CD next to her Bible on the bookshelf.

I was always like "why the fuck do you keep it there if you think it'll make you go to hell?"

I try.

For a long time mainstream rap has largely been about hustlers and hood stories, but the past few years, it's slowly moved away from that. Even with all it's success, Hip-hop was still it's own niche. Nowadays, Hip-hop is pop music, and Kanye is the face of that.

As for the Lennon bit, I'm not comparing their body of work, just the "bigger than Jesus" comments.

Obama > Kanye.

Obama believes all religions are a path to god. He has said it in speeches.

Also, in the bible, Jesus tells you to always be prepared and to make use of your talents. He says parables like "The path to heaven is like having your lantern full of oil when it's needed. If it's low, you will not be let it." So you're not supposed to believe you'll be given everything effortlessly in Christianity... so I'm not sure what's new about Kanye's point there.

Just because he said it doesn't mean he believes it.

Also.. Rags to riches musician believes in God. News at 11.

And thread title is misleading. This makes Kayne NOT AWESOME if anything. (and plus his shitty last album).

Just because you said the above doesn't mean you believe it... just because anyone says anything doesn't mean they believe it.

Great input.

What musical talent? He's got an ear for samples but that's about it

Everyone says that but I don't see anyone recreating his success, I'm not that big of a fan but he's certainly not talentless.

He hates religion but he loves Obama. He can't fathom the concept that he might love a person who belongs to what he hates so he pretends Obama isn't really religious.

GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!!!!!! I'm from Chicago, and all I do is stay on the west and southside, Kanye has lost a lot of respect here over the past couple of years. Our generation's Lennon, get outta here.

Honestly, I think Kanye is just made that Jesus has billions of people that pray to him, and he doesn't.
