Job conundrum (I feel like I'm working for EA)

After today, I know exactly how any employee at EA feels. I was so elated last night to find that I have FINALLY found a job for the summer. It's been a bitch up here in michigan trying to find jobs. But I get this call from a landscaping company. They even tell me they're gonna pay me, starting, 10 bucks an hour. I think this is awesome. Then he says "Well we'll work you really hard, long hours, and we'll usually only work five or six days a week."

I get there today at 7am. I was happy! I can ride a lawn mower around and do peoples lawncare. Not too shabby, especially for 10 bucks an hour.

...fast forward...

I FINALLY get to go home at 9pm tonite. a 14 hour day. It sucked ass and I'm burnt to a crisp. After seeing how hard they work me, they're getting a STEAL at paying me only 10 bucks an hour. I mean, I was doing work that most people get paid twice that for. Then one of the guys told me the way it is. They don't work five or six days a week... they make us work all seven days a week, and that 14 hour day is completely normal, too. I asked fi it was, and he said, "Well, sometimes we leave earlier." What the FUCK?

So basically, I think i'm gonna quit. I tried it out, and fifteen hours later, I hate it. The question is... which is more important? My happiness (being able to, you know, spend more time AWAY from work than AT work) or my wallet? I choose happiness. I mean, honestly, there's gotta be a job SOMEWHERE that'll offer me hours different than either NONE or 100+, right? Right?

But yeah, now I know how EA employees feel. Work their asses off for a deal that SEEMS cool, until you realize how much work you gotta do for it, and suddenly, once your social life, or life in general, is gone... you realize that it wasn't worth it at all.

Tough situation. However, I'd give it at least a full week before deciding, if not more than that. Ideally, give it a few pay periods before deciding.

Then again, I don't think I've EVER worked a job that I absolutely loathed as of day 1, and I've had some pretty g-ddamn shitty jobs in my day.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
It's not unusual for a 10 dollar an hour job to be shit, but that sounds unusually shit. Find something else, dude.

Working 14 hours a day for 7 days a week and at only $10 an hour?

Quit.

No one should have to spend their every waking hour at work....which is essentially what you will be doing if you try to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night (which you will probably need). They aren't paying you nearly enough.

Seriously. I'll find you and kick your butt if you don't quit. Quite frankly, I don't even see how this is a conundrum because to me its totally obvious what you need to do here.

So you want to get paid more, but it seems your talents are limited to being a landscaping monkey. 0_o

No no, I've got tons of talent in sales and advertising, too. It's just that I'm still a college student for another year, and since I go away to college, it's hard to find jobs in either sales or advertising when I can really only work in this area through August. Plus, my experience plays into it, too: 2 years of being a cashier versus 5 years of being on a ground-crew at a golf course.

EDIT: And yeah, I actuall did quit the job. I'm glad other people can understand my feeling about actually wanting to have a life outside of work. I've got no problem working 40 hours a week, or even fifty or sixty... but ya gotta have days off. If it was 12 hours a day mon-fri and weekends off, i'd be fine. But its not. So screw it. I'll go bus tables or something, haha.

Thats why we import Mexicans to do lawn work. It's a bitch that no sane person would do.

Screw that 12 hour+ days for 6-7 days... eventually your body will just shut downn from exhaustion anyway.

EA employees are probably salaried. So they don't get any direct benefits of working long hours, other than temporary relief from the threat of losing their jobs.

EA lost 91% of its stock value in the last quarter. All those stock bonuses...gone.

What goes around, comes around.

I just took a quick look through an EA stock chart... and I have to ask... where did you get that 91% figure from?

Within the last 52 weeks EA's stock has been in the range 43.38 - 71.16.

Currently the stock is 54.11.

Did I misread something?

The figure comes from industry sources. Can't say any more than that. :/

Which industry? Stock Market industry or video game industry? Cuz it holds far less weight if it's someone from Rockstar going "OH YEAH... EA SUCKS HARSH FUCKERS!" versus someoen from The Wall Street Journal saying it.

Well that's a strange response... The trend of their stock price on Wall Street(which is easily found at any of the finance sites)doesn't show the value loss you claim.

Phhtt!!! You got paid hourly. Work from 7am-3am on salary THEN you can complain.

I know what you mean, I'm salaried too. I work about 65 hours a week. If I break down what I make hourly.... well.... AM CRY

I would bang a hot farmer!
How old are you? I'm guessing that you're under 18 since you're talking about a summer job (unless you're in college). Doesn't your state have regulations on the maximum number of hours you're allowed to work a week if you're under 18? If you're over 18, never mind.

The legal argument is pointless what are you going to do sue for the 50 bucks. Welcome to the real world that's life. Most of these jobs you will find are ten times harder the first week. I would stick it out, be a man and learn to earn your daily bread. Most of these jobs do come with some perks. One you work so much you can't spend so there great for summer gigs when your trying to save. Plus you'll find that the 10 dollars an hour is only there to weed out the useless tits. You survive a week or two and you'll probable find you start getting a lot of meals and beer on the boss and probable a raise. If after a couple of weeks that dosent happen time to quit.
