John Carpenter USED to be badass.

Most of his stuff was released/being made before I was born. But I've caught some of his older stuff on TV and DVD. The Thing is a classic and scared the shit out of me when I was younger. Big trouble in little China is still one of my favorites. They Live is awesome. Certain parts of Prince of Darkness were scary as all fuck.

Still haven't seen The Fog or Escape from NY.

But how did he go from that to the utter shit that is Ghosts of Mars/Vampires/Escape from LA?

He fell off hard.

Carpenter has always done camp, you either like it or you didn't.

BTW Escape from NY rocks... and dammit Ghost of Mars kicks ass screw the haterz.

Ghosts of Mars is terrible. Especially the awful soundtrack. I have a feeling that Carpenter wrote the script trying to sell it as a Doom movie script. Very much about it is similar to the game and he said that he would have liked to direct the Doom movie. Ghosts also has some of the worst sets and lighting in a Carpenter film and especially for a recent film. It looks like a straight to video movie.

Village of the Damned isn't bad. Mouth of Madness is interesting but doesn't have much of a climax. I enjoyed Escape from LA for what it was though anticipation for it was through the room.

Of his older films, Halloween has some really awful editing. Escape from NY is a classic movie but also has some editing issues. The Thing, Starman, Big Trouble in Little China, and Prince of Darkness are all excellent.

Basically when he was on top he made movies that were ahead of their time and by the time audiences caught up he could no longer get a budget. They Live would have been a much better film if he got more money to make it.

I do remember really liking Memoirs of an Invisible Man when I saw it in the theater but I haven't watched it since.

His timing also became impeccably bad and his luck even worse. The Thing opening the week after or before ET couldn't have been worse timing aside from opening the same day.

Oh well... I still think he has one more great movie in him.. Just wish Debra Hill could have particapted in it as well :(

I saw the original Fog last week. DAMN this guy was good. He took a premise that should've been silly and and made it completely badass and scary.

One cool thing about him is it seems like all his movies could fit in the same universe.

Him, Kurt Russell and Keith David have to get together again.

Carpenters last few movies have been bombs, weird thing about him is he seems to do better when he has LESS money to work with sometimes.

I swear, twice a year we get this topic. John Carpenter's slide in quality is two fold, and it seems pretty easy to trace where the jump off point is -- Escape from L.A.

That is also the last movie Debra Hill and Carpenter did together, and I think that shows how important Hill was to Carpenter in terms of creativity and production. Debra Hill moved on and her lack of involvement in Carpenter's most recent works is probably a definite reason why they're - gasp! - not that great.

Most importantly was that Escape from L.A. was that last movie Carpenter himself wrote (until Ghosts of Mars). All of Carpenter's memorable projects were either from his screenplay or an original screenplay that he would go in and make his own (even if uncredited, like Big Trouble for instance). Now he did write Ghosts of Mars, but it's a general concensus that it is nothing but a shoddy remake of Assault on Precinct 13... on Mars. Escape from L.A., which always gets a lukewarm fan reception was a sequel no less. Carpenter has not written a completely original idea since They Live, which seems to be the fan pick for the last good film he made.

What does this show?

Well, you can't replace a Debra Hill, but more importantly, Carpenter thrives when directing original material written by himself or original material from another screenwriter that he still works on to make it his own. And he hasn't directed original material he wrote or worked on in almost 17 years. 17 years!

So either Carpenter has just run out of ideas, stop caring or both. I think we'll see if this formula holds true when Carpenter directs his first original idea written by him (and Todd Farmer of Jason X fame!) due out sometime next year -- Psychopath.

Vampires isn't bad. It's campy. It didn't have any pretentions of being anything otehr than a fun movie.

I watched Vampires for the first time last week... And I was pleasantly surprised! All the talk of how terrible the film was lowered my expectations, and I enjoyed watching it. Like you said, it was made to be fun, and it was.

Also, Ghosts Of Mars is great, even if it is sort of a remake of a remake (Rio Bravo>Assault On Precinct 13>Ghosts Of Mars).

The Thing, Prince of Darkness, They Live, Halloween, Escape from NY are all CLASSICS.

I really didn't see The Thing until this past winter. I had rented it when it was brand new on VHS back in the early 80s...but I was pretty young and it creeped the shit out of me. I rented it from Netflix and REALLY enjoyed it. Very tense movie.

I just picked up They Live on DVD. I watch Prince of Darkness once or twice a year. Underrated creepshow that is.
