John Romero Departs Midway (AKA: Fired?)

Itagaki's getting drunk on Boone's Farm right now and Mikami's trying to find the right blade to cut his own head off....
The Japanese ego-maniacs are just much, much more fun. :)

Ah yes, John Romero--hero to millions. Took on a cute, but mousy girl...who turned into a plastic freak.

Then he married a teenage romanian.[/img]

Hey now, I don't care for Lanning, but at least the last project from his team was EXTREMELY good. Oddworld Stranger was an excellent game.

Exactly, at least he put out a product some people enjoy, and now he's doing what?

Ahh, Stevie Case... people used to talk the nastiests things about her back in the 3Dfx days. Fortunatelly it looks like she planted her feet on the floor and now she is married to someone called Stuart Platt, who happens to be (drumroll for drama) THQ Wireless' Director of Product Development.

Oddworld Stranger was an excellent game.

An unbelievably awesome package that proved the mainstream wouldn't know a good game if it smacked them in the joystick. That game was so well produced - I can't say enough good things about it.

Who knows. Stranger was only released a few months ago and we didn't know any details about it until it had been under development for a while. After Stranger, though, I know I'm certainly interested in their next project.

I want to remember an announcement that he was leaving the industry to do something else, hence the comparison.

'John Romero is going to mail you his Bitch!'

Heh.

Hmm? I hadn't heard that...

Would be a shame. His team finally struck greatness, so to see them fall apart immediately afterward would be disappointing.

Wow, after like 8 dates he married a Romanian supergoth that was stalking him over the internet. She even wore black on her wedding day. Now that's hardcore!

The whole story is posted on her blog....on one hand it's the inspiring story of a fan who got to be with the one she idolized, but on the other hand it's just kind of creepy.

http://rome.ro/rhaluka/our_story.htm

Random excerpts....

I remember that the email i sent to him was one of the first emails i've ever sent! And it was kinda nutty too for a first one, since i told him "i love you" in that message!

That was actually the beginning of our friendship in a way...I was messaging him pretty often about how i was doing, random things from school, family, etc. and he would message me back. All this was in my last years of high school and we had never actually had a realtime chat at that point.

My friends were making fun of me because of the fact i was coming everyday to the icafe and chatting with him almost everyday. They were saying how i'll be old and in a wheelchair and i'll still come there to talk to John! They were getting really tired of me talking about him all the time..

8 September 2003 - We started talking [online] and i found out he's not seeing anyone there at that time and i told him that if he was living in my town i would try really hard to be with him! All the conversation started more like a joke and of course i didnt take it too serious until he said he'd like me to be his girlfriend!

We started talking about seeing each other in person..That happened at the end of november 2003.

The next time he came to Romania (26th january 2004) we were married!

So excuse me, he actually got married after one date/visit....and roughly less than 5 months after committing to a relationship with a girl he met when she was still in high school (and probably 20 years his junior).

I still think Romero is always overrated, It is Carmack who created the Engines..Romero is just a PR guy who was there at the right moment...
I hope gamecompanies do not spill more money on it. Just finish your GDprojects dude, that is proffessional working, ......

A face full of cute mixed with a head full of NUTS. O_o

There is no word on why Romero left Midway although this post at Computer Games Magazine speculates that Romero was fired by Midway thanks to a quick mention near the end of a lengthy blog entry by game designer David Jaffe.

I don't get this line; Mr. Jaffe's blog sounded like he was merely reflecting on what he heard about it from the industry grapevine. Now, Midway could've already fired Romero, and Jaffe making it public in that piece could've forced them to make an formal announcement, but I highly doubt they pulled the trigger because of that.

Maybe he wasn't that great to start with, but is associated with doom and ID, so he keeps getting worse and worse jobs as people learn the hard way. Like Lanning, I doubt Romero will be in the industry much longer.

I thought Lanning wasn't around anymore because he refused to let publishers take control of properties he created, plus he refused to make a PS2 version of Stranger's inhabitant. Now ok-these are politics, its not as if he sucks, begging to land a job. You make it sound like the guy is asking for food because he has no skills in game creation.

They may not be directly comparable, but I guess my point was if he couldn't make it (the way he wanted to or whatever), then why should we believe romero can. But mostly I brought up the comparison because of the romero moving to xbox360 comment heh.

I still see no need in kicking him when he's down. God knows we've all heard it before.

Welcome to the interweb.

For one thing, Itagake and Mikami continue to be associated with good games.

After all, Romero only designed the visual feel of the original Wolf3D, DOOM and Quake 1 (I believe) His overall visual style was certainly lacking in all post-Romero ID Software project

Oh ok,on that I defintely agree. Lanning was pretty stubborn when it came to working with publishers when it came to his "babies"..heh. He had balls to burn both Sony and EA. Its too bad the guy dug a hole for himself,I did enjoy his games.
